Chris Webber Says "It's a Done Deal"

Well it looks like it's a done deal and will be made official tomorrow.

America's Next Top Warrior!

Use your hops for some more Webber links. (Yes this honestly amuses me more than The Yi Movement!)

Star-divide

Straight from eWebber [ESPN.com]:

Chris Webber told ESPN.com on Monday night that he will arrive in Oakland on Tuesday to formally re-join the Golden State Warriors.

"I'll be there tomorrow," Webber said via e-mail. "It's a done deal."

Thanks to GSoM reader CallMeKang for alerting the community about this in a diary.

Geoff Lepper's got the details on the numbers and more [Contra Costa Times]:

Webber's deal is expected to be worth approximately $550,000, although the Warriors will be reimbursed roughly $200,000 from the league under salary cap rules meant to encourage the signing of veteran free agents.

Seriously though major props to Martin McNeal from the Sac's finest paper. I'm sure he heard a few jokes about his original piece that made the connection between Nellie eating at Chris Webber's restaurant and things going full circle.

What's ribs got to do with?

It looks like everything.

More golden coverage:

It looks this signing will also bring an end to Troy Hudson's tenure with the Warriors:

Another source confirmed the team has put in for waivers on injured guard Troy Hudson, clearing the way for Webber, a five-time All-Star, to join the club.

Best of luck to T-Hud. Hopefully he gets another chance in the NBA, but if he doesn't get that opportunity he should feel proud of his solid 11 year NBA career. Remember Hudson was undrafted (not just the album!) and worked his way to become a key member of Magic and Timberwolves playoff teams. It would be great if recently extended CJ Watson's career fit that mold as well. Also see: Troy Hudson's Season Probably Over

When we first planned GSoM Night 3 we thought it was going to be exciting with fan fav Jason Richardson coming back home. Little did we know it was also going to be a throwback to 1993-1994. Let's welcome J-Rich and CWebb with some of that golden GSoM treatment. I expect standing ovations for both fellas. Bonus points to anyone who sports a retro 1993-1994 Chris Webber Warriors jersey (under your GSoM Night 3 tee of course!).

I know we're days away, but what are your predictions for Friday's big GSoM Night 3? Think the old gang of Spree, Timy Hardaway, Billy Owens, Avery, Gatty, Big Vic, Byron Houston, Keith Jennings, and Jud Buechler will be there too?

C Webb Signs
Chris Webber update:
The Sacramento Bee is reporting that Chris Webber has signed a contract with the Golden State Warriors.

I think this is a great move for the Warriors.  Webber still has some left in the tank.  If pressed into full-time duty, I could see him being a reliable 12 pt 7 reb guy.  A team can never have too many guys that are capable of that night in night out.

It will be interesting to see how this works.  I think Webber's impact will be a lot bigger than most people anticipate (whether it be positive or negative).

http://rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NBA&hl=92411&id=263

I tried to make this a diary, but it kept getting deleted.  Is it because it's too short?

Not sure what's left in the tank, but. . . .
There just may be an upside to this Webber thing after all.  For the past few days I've just seen this as silly.  But as it's become reality -- and since I still see Nellie as a very creative (if too stubborn) force -- I've rethought things, and have tentatively convinced myself this can work IF Nellie figures out how to play Webber and Biedrins TOGETHER -- even if it's only 10-15 minutes a game.

On offense, with Webber at the high post, AB can either stay down low or work the PnR with CWebb, who passes a bit better than Jack.  (Also, since both are tall and Beans is an excellent "air" passer, the PnR could work both ways.)  Plus, if there's anything left in Webber's legs, he can also follow AB on the PnR for a short, 8-foot pop -- his best "shot".  And with AB and CWebb in a two-man game, we can expect defenses to double team the ball, leaving an open three somewhere else.

(The W's tend to hit their threes when (1) their open and (2) they have time to set and square up; things go South when they fire them off the dribble (Hello, Jack) or shoot too quickly (Hey, Matt).  In this scenario, there should be time for a good catch and shoot, the W's three-point success shot.)

On defense, it'd be nice to see AB finally get some help down low, since he's there alone far too much.  (Only Monta should "pre-release" -- but too often we see three or four guys breaking, in hopes of getting one of AB's quick outlets.) If CWebb will get down low on D, he and AB can each defend a low post and still help out when necessary.  This would also give AB freedom to square up on opposition bigs shooting 8-footers, making it easier for Beans to defend -- and avoid those nettlesome cheap contact fouls.

The key, though, is getting these two guys on the floor together, since that works best for both of them, and should allow Nellie to sit BD, and even Jack, an extra 6-8 minutes a game, so that they can stop pacing themselves so much.

If this has been Nellie's plan all along, and if CWebb is willing to get on this page, I think this thing could just work out.

How about signing the Birdman
Chris Andersen is the guy I was hoping we'd sign or at least let try out. He provides boards, blocks and is a hell of a lot younger than C-Web. Plus the Bay would love him.

if webber makes the dubs lose games he should get lit on fire. WHAT IS GONNA DO FOR THE TEAM NOTHING. he might giv beans and wright and the OTHER 2 7 FOOTERS WE HAVE ON THE TEAM some advise about having a bad career in the nba besides that he cant do anything else. WE HAVE 2 CENTERS AND A POWER FORWARD WE ARNT USING PLEASE NELLIE USE EM FOR GOD SAKES. WEBBER WILL NOT HELP US IN THE LONG RUN. HE CANT KEEP UP WITH THE UPTEMPO STYLE, HIS OLD AND HE CANT D-UP AGAISNT THE WILD WEST'S BIG MEN (BOOZER, DUNCUN, AMARE, CAMBY, BYNUM). he cant do it just tell kosta, wright, pob and beans to bulk up AND USE THE TRADE CASH TO GET TYRUS THOMAS!!!!! I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. HIS NOT EVEN PLAYIN IN CHI AND WE HAV THE MONEY AND THE PLAYERS TO GET HIM
TYRUS THOMAS> C-WEBB

by gswLLBatman on Jan 28, 2008 11:20 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Why
Thomas is not what we need. And although he may be greater than Webber, remember we don't lose anything but a little bit of money for Webber. The Bulls will not just give him away.  Thats like someone looking at our team and saying Wright isn't getting any burn so we should get him. Makes no sense.  Really young players take time to develope and aren't given away for nothing.

im really excited to see webber return to the dubs. i think he will actually make a bigger impact than people might anticipate him to. he can help out with rebounds and delivering the ball and he doesnt necessarily have to "run" with the warriors because hell just trail behind on the fast breaks and whatnot. overall, i think its a good decision and its for the better...

The only beef
I have with this is: What will this do to Croshere? The dude already gets little minutes, and this is going to squeltch them to almost nothing.

The other thing this move implies is a total vote of non-confidence to Patrick O'Bryant. The dude will walk next season, guaranteed. Granted, we thought we'd have Mike Montgomery as coach when we signed POB, but I think we are all in agreement this is another Warriors draft blunder.

Here's to hoping he finds his game somewhere else.

Some of you guys are complaining about the C-Webb
signing because we have all 2 centers, 1 PF and 1 SG we dont ever play and signing Cwebb will prevent them from playing and DEVELOPING.

While u guys are behind the computer with ur B#tching from what u only see during gametime, the coaching staff and the players in the team see these Rookies (and POB) EVERYDAY in practice. If they say these guys arent ready, then they arent. Why play them even a single minute if we are hanging on to a game? Every game in the West counts, why risk developing these young guys who dont know the plays, arent physically or mentally ready, or have No heart/passion/drive during an intensely close game???  If these young guys were "BALLIN" in practice and "DOMINATING" the other players, surely they will get more minutes. If POB grabbed 10 Rodmans, 20 Pts, and 5 Blocks during every practice game do u think Nelson will not play him? From what little we see right now, these guys arent reliable and NOT GOOD ENOUGH to be in the rotation in close games. If these guys arent ready, then THEY ARENT READY!!!

C Webb gives Nellie another playa' to work with that he can TRUST. If it doesnt work, it would still be cheap (300k-350k) and be off the books by the end of the playoffs (if we make it), so WHY NOT?

by Delinquentsoul on Jan 29, 2008 1:39 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

thats good perspective...
however, and this has been pointed out before by adam at fastbreak, nellie will ride his players when they are both tired and playing sloppy instead of bringing in energy. while monte takes over during these spurts, give davis and jackson time on the pine and let some guys go in there and rough it up a bit.

Ok seriously, I don't think he should come back, but he was and is a good passer, and on the offensive side knows how to score. He was a rebound champ too. Ok, maybe he's just 1/5 of what he used to be, but maybe Patrick O'bryant will be so inspired by the old man, he'll explode. Patrick makes around 16Mil per year to sit on the bench. Not sure if Webbs is gonna like that too much.

one last thing
and then i'll be happy and cheer on the dubs again.

that was a great sacramento kings team: divac, webber, peja, christie, bibby.  but they could never get over the hump.  it became clear, even at their peak, that they were never going to get a ring, and it was because webber couldn't get them there.  not only was he not enough of a leader, there was a long-discussed lack in his mental make-up to handle the pressure of those playoff series, year after year.  does anyone else recall THAT chris webber?

now i know he won't be expected to lead us anywhere.  that job belongs to baron and jax now.  but still.  this guy has shown he's a flawed leader in sacramento and he's shown he's a terrible follower in philly and (to a lesser extent) in detroit.  i'm always glad to pick up a talented big man, but i'd prefer to take my chances on hungry d-leaguers or euro-basket stars than a man who already wrecked this organization and brought it lower than it's ever been, and has had a near-infinite number of opportunities already to redeem himself.

but, after all, this is the crazy-ass warriors.  and if he can increase our crazy quotient, which this signing will certainly do, then let the carnival begin!

by Ormolov on Jan 29, 2008 9:27 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Disagree
I'm going to have to disagree with his lack of leadership in Sac being the reason they couldn't get the ring. The thing is they were a very good team during their run.  The Lakers were a great team. I actually thought Webber played really well in those playoffs, but would consider Bibby more of the leader.  I think if you take away the Shaq and Kobe Lakers from that era they have a legitimate to chance to have at least one ring.

have Shaq and Kobe in their primes at the same time is just unfair

yea seriously
3 championships...Kobe and Shaq...considering what they had up in Sac, they did a good job, actually even threatening the Lake Show from playoff contention...every series they had in the playoffs was pretty damn exciting...It was kinda like...OK, if the Kings don't beat them, NO ONE WILL...

by RubberDubDubs on Jan 29, 2008 1:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Plus
In game six Shaq went over the back of Scot Pollard, I'm not 100% sure this is who was fouled, for a rebound and put back dunk. Now this would have been foul #6 on Shaq. This dunk started a run by the Lakers led by Shaq. Now if Shaq would have been called for this foul the Kings most likely would have won this game and the series sending them to the NBA finals. In which they most likely would have beating the Nets. It wasn't Webber's fault he never won a ring it's the refs for let Shaq get away with a critical foul near the end of the game. Now this was without a doubt a foul, Shaq's elbow was touching Pollard's chest when Shaq was behind him.

And regarding  jersey #4...

"Watson has been wearing No. 4, the jersey that was property of Webber during his one season as a Warrior. What if Webber wants to wear that number again? "If he wants it, I'm taking all (offers)," Watson joked. And if Webber just stares him down? "Then he might win," Watson allowed."

Moving this from the diary section:
Check out his site chriswebber.com (News section)

Though it is a short message it says alot. Probably has a good PR person.

It starts out:
"It is with great pride and humility..." (sorry having trouble with the quoted text format)

Here are my thoughts:

   1. He knows who the leaders are.
   2. Acknowledges the past
   3. Understands what type of team we are and willing to play our style.

He also mentions that he wants to wear #4 again (which may be a problem...) and alludes to the We Believe slogan

Let me know what you think.
