OPEN THREAD: Game 47 - Warriors @ Hornets

Warriors (W-L): 27-19
Hornets (W-L): 32-12
TV: FSN Bay Area
Radio: KNBR 1050
Time: 5:00 pm PST
When people say "everything is bigger in Texas," they weren't lying.
Yao Ming looked as dominant as Ghengis Khan (or fill in another historic or contemporary Chinese icon or symbol of your choice...) among our small-ball Warriors.
Things won't get any easier tonight in New Orleans where it looks like it will get even bigger.
The Warriors take on the red-hot New Orleans Hornets, who currently sit atop the Western Conference at very impressive 32-12. Is it me, or is it a little funny how these two teams ended up benefitting from that lopsided trade a few years ago that landed us our recent all-star and Team USA participant, Baron Davis? The tank job that the Hornets participated in gave way to a great lottery pick in the form of Chris Paul, which many have said is already an elite point guard deserving of MVP honors only 3 years deep in the league. The slew of questionable off-season signings by Hornet's management that only Chris Mullin seems capable of has turned out to be tightly fitting jigsaw puzzle (with the exception of Bobby Jackson perhaps...a player I used to love when he was healthy).
This jigsaw puzzle has been a nightmare for the Warriors this season. Peja Stojakovic has seemed to regain some of his all-star form, averaging over 19 points a game in the last 7 games. The dude can still drain the three when given the space; knowing how porous the Warriors perimeter defense is, we can expect Peja to drop several from downtown. Though Tyson Chandler offensive ineptness might make Biedrins look like Kevin Mchale on the block, his sheer size and athleticism means that the Warriors are going to have to make it a team effort to box him out or to cover him. There were way too many second chance points created by Chandler's hustle on the offensive end (and not to mention alleyoops). When the shot goes up, we can't leave it up to Biedrins to shore up rebounds against a team that also features David West on the block.
Our Warriors tend to do a good job off demoralizing losses against teams they should beat. Though Nelson's choice of using extreme mismatches might be quite a novelty, having some size down in the paint doesn't look like it would hurt... unless our young bigs are really THAT bad, as Atma suggested in the recap to the last game. Maybe its time to activate Chris Webber as soon as possible.
Predictions:
* Warriors by 1
* Kosta Perovic gets off the bench for fouling purposes
* Biedrins lights up the Hornets like he did the first time they played
* Baron gets much needed rest and is able to make those easily missed layups that we saw yesterday.
* Tyson Chandler has 9 offensive rebounds
* Stojakovic only makes 2 3pt shots, but Marcus Vinicius makes up for it.
Make sure to drop your predictions in the comments as well!

Can Jax have a good shooting night twice in a row? I'm thinking no. I say Big Al is hot in the first half but cools off.

Just Win Baby
Did you guys notice the way he kept flexing after every dunk against us the last time we played. "Hey Tyson, your hella skinny! why you flexing anyway.
I also think its hella funny how he changed his number to 6 because he wanted to be twice the player he was in Chicago, which was 3, about the points he would avg before he met Chris paul.
GO DUBS! WE BELIEVE!
yeah the game will be on tv

i agree with 3 The Hard Way
Enjoy the view
You are tired of seeing Tyson Chandler Flex after dunks in the last game or the frequency that it was occurring? If he's so skinny how come no one could keep him off the boards (22 rebounds; 8 on offense) that's

Tys, Flexing
I was at the game behind the back-board he was flexing way-too much for the lack of guns he was in possession of. If he need's to bulk up, BALCO is right around the corner here in the bay.

It's funny how the swarm comes out after a 9-game winning streak, where were you when the Tys was nursing that glass-ankle of his last year.

I want to see the team
Anyone with some real ideas?
Seriously, how do the W's win tonight's game? On paper this looks like a total mismatch, with the W's coming off a b2b, while the Hornets have been resting and destroying other teams. Chris Paul might be 1 of 3 players in the league that Baron cannot contain, and the rest of the team (Peja, Chandler, the wildly underrated David West, and good bench play) is running at a high level.
I'm sure there's something special/different for Baron returning to New Orleans. I lived there from 1996-2000, and the city I knew doesn't exist anymore. There was a strange paradoxical sense of hope and hopelessness when I returned post-Katrina. I truly wouldn't be surprised if Baron played a very inspired game tonight. Well, if he plays (my money is on 'yes').
Ok, so what's the strategy besides "Hope the W's shoot well"?? A few options:
- Make Chris Paul play defense. Isolate him with bigger guards (Baron, Jax) and post him up. Run him through screens. Hopefully, by the fourth, he'll be tired and less effective on the offensive end. If I recall correctly, he's not a fantastic defender.
- Work the mid-range game. With Chandler guarding the rim, repeated attacks at the basket could result in multiple blocks and transition baskets the other way. I totally respect his defensive presence around the basket, so use the pick-and-roll and off-the-ball screens to set up mid-range jumpers for Monta, Barnes, Jax, and Harrington.
- Make an adjustment if the W's are getting killed on the glass. There's a chance the W's get eaten alive by the bigger Hornets frontcourt on both ends. So, if necessary, let's get either a super-small team out there to run (tough on a b2b) or go big and use Wright, Kosta, and/or POB. DJFL likes Kosta for fouling purposes but is anyone opposed to seeing him for 5 minutes for basketball purposes? Using the big men is not going to hurt at that point.
- Kelenna. He must be well rested, right? Perhaps this was Nellie's strategy all along. Maybe 30 minutes tonight for Azubuike.
Go Dubs!!!
Number 3
As for Azubuike, I don't think he'll be seeing anywhere near 30 minutes. I think he has an injury to his knee, so that means ...more time for the french trainwreck...
My Bad
You are right though: Probably a pipe dream, considering the coach.

Instead of taping on VCR, you can go to On Demand (Ch 1) -> Sports -> FSN -> Warriors and watch the game 30 minutes - 24 hours after it finishes. If you didn't know.

We got to contain Chris Paul
Some notable stats out there: out of the 40+ games he's played this season hes really only have 4 bad games, and they were against the Pacers, Clippers, Pistons, and Blazers. Where he shot below .400 % and avg less than 10 assists.
I remember watching him the last time we played, Baron got really tired in the 4th from chasing him around all game, and Paul just ran circles around him. If CJ Watson has a defensive bone in his body, were gonna need it for tonight.
Realistically Monta's gonna have to put the clamps on paul tonight, because he's the only one fast enough to probablly keep up with paul for 4 quarters.
If we can contain him, warriors have a chance to pull the upset.
For real
Wasn't it B Wright guarding Mo Pete? Horrible strategy.
I would rather see Bellynelly vs Peja, that might actually be fun.

Truth be told we got insanely lucky that Davis was shooting the 3 really well. We crushed morale by hitting those 3s at the end of the 2nd and the end of the 3rd.
I wouldn't say we got insanely lucky

Enjoy this one boys
The Western race is insane and historic.
Warriors need to crush through February for a chance at returning to the playoffs. Tonight felt like a playoff game. In a 7 game series, I like the Warriors' chances against all teams not named Utah or San Antonio.
