Stay tuned for the recap...

Star-divide

On paper I don't like this matchup for the Warriors one bit. The Charlotte- I mean Oklahoma City- ooops, I mean NEW ORLEANS Hornets have been playing very good ball this year and are neck and neck with the Dallas Mavericks record-wise, which is no simple feat this far into the season. They boast an extremely impressive road record as well at 12-5. As a matter of fact the Hornets are looking for their 4th straight road win tonight in Oakland.

The Hornets are a very exciting up and coming team and when you break it down I'd take their starting 5 (when healthy) over the Warriors. Let's take a look at their cast:

Chris Paul: Every hoops fan knows about CP3. He's the closest thing this league has to a modern day Isiah Thomas (the Pistons' PG, not the Knicks GM). Don't be surprised if Paul makes this year's Western Conference All-Star squad over our man Boom Dizzle either (see All-Star Showdown: Baron Davis or Chris Paul? over at SFGate).

The key to shutting him down is going to be getting him into foul trouble. If the Warriors ever get the chance to post up BD on him, they've got to do it every time. Last season when the Warriors beat the Hornets by 21 points in Oakland for Nellie's 1200th win they nearly got Paul to foul out and they held him to 11 points and 5 assists with 4 turnovers.

Morris Peterson: Mo Pete's a very solid vet. Nothing spectacular, but he's fully capable of dropping a 20 point night if the other guys are struggling. I doubt Nellie will put Monta on Mo Pete because of the height and weight difference and instead match up BD on him. Let's hope Monta can play some semblance of defense on CP3.

Peja Stojakovic: In his prime back in the glory days with the Kings I thought Peja looked every bit as good as Dirk Nowitzki. That was probably a stretch, but there's no denying that Peja could shoot the lights out and grab some boards. He's down to 14.2 ppg and 3.4 rpg this season, but this man can still shoot the lights out. Peja's hitting 42.2% of his treys and 94.9% of his free throws this season. If Jack is matched up with him I don't see him hitting that rate from downtown, but he's a real threat to be conscious of at ALL times.

Two things are certain though: DO NOT LEAVE THIS MAN OPEN FROM DOWNTOWN! DO NOT FOUL HIM!

David West: I think it's safe to call West the most underrated 4 in the league. He's just a shade under 20-10 and 1.5 blocks, but gets next to no recognition or hype nationally. Look at some of the outings he's had this season and you'll be really scared about what he can do to the Warriors tonight. I admittedly don't know as much about his game as I'd like, so I'll be watching him very closely tonight. From the numbers alone he looks to be a very, very good power forward.

Tyson Chandler: I've always thought that the Bulls had the right idea when they drafted and paired up Chandler and Eddy Curry. If the Bulls could've somehow merged those two fellows into one basketball player you'd have an elite big man, but sadly that's not biologically possible and it's ethically reprehensible. Chandler does his damage on the glass and on D. He's a workman and hopefully he doesn't work the Warriors inside too much tonight. Chandler's bigger and stronger than Andris Biedrins, so expect the Warriors interior softness to be further exposed tonight. The key will be to go at him with penetration from BD, Monta, and Jack to see if he'll pick up some ticky tack fouls. The more he sits, the better the Warriors' chances are for getting this W.

It's time to go Super Hero on these buzzing pests tonight at the Roaracle! It's going to take some magical powers to pull this one off and render the advantages the Hornets have on paper meaningless. The good news is that since Jack's been back the Warriors have yet to lose two games in a row. Let's see if the fellas can keep that streak alive. I have this feeling Nellie's got something crazy up his sleeve for this one.

Don't miss:

Predictions

  • Warriors by 1
  • Baron Davis gets a triple double and makes a good case why he's the real deal All-Star PG.
  • Chris Paul gets 20-10.
  • Nellie plays a little Marco Polo at the point and the experiment doesn't pan out.
  • Chandler and his Wessyde homie put up a combined 50 points and 25 boards.

Drop your predictions and live game thoughts in the comments. Let's get this open thread poppin'!

Over under on the attendance tonight... I'm going to say 15,000 at best.

I am very excited to get to see Paul and West play.  You never see them televised nationally so I pretty much have only seen the highlights.
Anyone else think Chandler would be a perfect center for the Warriors (after 'Sheed, of course)?

by MoreHeartThanBrains on Jan 4, 2008 1:20 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definetly
no Marco Polo games tonight.
and i think the game won't be as close as the prediction.

the winning team wins with 5+ points tonight. and its gonna be the dubs.

Its gonna be a tough one tonight
I wonder which random player on the hornets will have a career night.  Bobby Jackson?
Best duo since...

MP WILL DOMINATE
Morris Peterson, that is.

Paul can guard Ellis
Mo Pete is the bigger guy on Baron
Peja on Jack
West on Al
Chandler on Biedrins

The only advantage I can see for us is at the 3, Jack on Peja...so Jack better not screw it up.

Their bench doesn't impress me much, but then again, they're probably not scared of ours.

A Golden state of mind Indeed.

Big home game tonight, but Dubs pull it out. They win by 8.

Sigh...
...the weather is just too brutal. I was gonna see the game tonight, but I'm not gonna drive over the damn Richmond bridge. It was closed earlier today cause of a big rig crash, I heard.

Just a quesion...
That "Warriors by 1" prediction is really Warriors win by 1, or is it the famous "Warriors by 1" (we lose) prediction??
I really think we can win this one!

Yeah, I watched it too (Orlando-Houston)
It would have been to take the game to overtime but the officials ruled that he didn't get the ball off in time and Houston won the game. It sucks - I wanted Foyle to score so badly.

Nice Plays
Nice block from Pietrus and nice dunk from Baron Davis. Not so nice call on Pietrus with 0.1 seconds left in the quarter to give them free throws but still, after being down by 14 - I'm happy we're only down by 2 at the half.

by tadams1080 on Jan 4, 2008 9:27 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We need to rethink our gameplan
We cannot outscore teams by running and gunning.  We need more shooters, better penetrators than we have.  If we can't get the steals we can't get out and run.
Fitz said it earlier, when we played our "road" game we mounted a comeback.  The first 3 minutes of the 3rd were pathetic.

Playing Baron Davis more doesn't help. We ran him out there for 46 minutes and got blown out.

Can we get some PG help and someone to tell Nellie to SIT BARON regardless of what the score is? Even if you ride him to come back temporarily, it's just gonna drag him down later and kill us in the rest of the season.

Wright needs more burn; the offense REEALLY needs to start getting Biedrins and Wright and Harrington the ball INSIDE instead of Jack DAILY shooting horrendously from the field.

I often wonder why Baron
can't get better chemistry with AB

As much as I love baron and think he can be a dominate player I doubt he is a great point guard.  Sometimes he plays to fast and doesn't  do a great job of really getting his teammates off

Chris Paul
I believe just used Oracle and GS to launch his campaign for MVP.

by greala on Jan 4, 2008 10:19 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

CP3 is the real deal BUT...
let's wait on all the ejaculations over him considering he hasn't led his team to a playoff victory unlike Baron! Not saying he won't, but I'll wait on the whole MVP, greatest pg talk until I see him in action in the postseason.

by blahblah on Jan 4, 2008 10:22 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Baron can be dominate but there is no longer
a doubt in my mind that Paul is a great point guard.  Baron sometimes doesn't seem to be able to really set teammates up, to change speeds and let plays slowly develop like the few great points can consistently

I think Paul is now in that elite class

by Zig on Jan 4, 2008 10:25 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

MVP
is a regular season award. Forgive the ejaculation, I was just excited seeing him such high calibre. As for greatest PG, I did not say that. But since you bring it up, only Steve Nash is a clearly a better PG. I'd have a tough time taking anyone else over him. Maybe Billups, but then I probably dig him too much.

by greala on Jan 4, 2008 10:34 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wait
I love Nash and all, but can someone please explain to me why Nash is better than CP3? The man couldn't guard a statue, and is only great because of D'Antoni's system. Compare the Suns roster to the Hornets roster. Would the Suns have the same or better success if Chris Paul was on the team? I think so.

by mistererickk on Jan 4, 2008 10:38 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nash is the centerpiece
of D'Antoni's system. I don't think it works without  him and he's so good offensively that I can tolerate his mediocre defense. I am not sure if the word "clutch" is frowned on around these parts, but I believe Nash is. I am not sure I'd want anyone else in the game down two and the final possesion more than Nash.

Plus if the reverse was the case, I think Hornets would be just as good if not better with Nash.

by greala on Jan 4, 2008 10:43 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No I agree with you
CP3 is amazing right now, no doubt an allstar. All credit given to him.

I'm just saying that he needs to have some postseason success to be considered "elite" IMO though he is well on his way and its not his fault b/c his team wasn't completely healthy until this year.

jack
what exactly did he do to earn 40+ minutes?

it's not as if we were stopping fools on defense

some offensive flow might have actually let us stay close

i blame him for our shortages, cuz its' really when h e starts jacking up j's or forcing stuff

Pietrus has 3 fouls, 2 boards, 1 block and shoots 2/6 in under 20 minutes and he's listed as +11, which just goes to show how useless single game plus/minus is

Ellis was a complete no show
Azubuike barely played

Brandan Wright was productive enough for Nellie to lose his balls and bench him, which  made no sense

A Golden state of mind Indeed.

Nellie's
leash on Jackson is way too long. I really wanted to  see more of Wright, he looked pretty solid with his activity in his first start. Barnes was useless... Monta was MIA... Buike should've seen more minutes, and I thought Pietrus was solid. His foul to end the  2nd quarter shouldn't even been called. Anyone else dislike those two refs out there today?
U mad?

Wright should be getting mp2's minutes
I watch mp2 make boneheaded plays and somehow gets 17 mins a game and wonder why couldn't wright get those mins.  I mean, he couldn't be that much worse.  Pietrus looks like a rookie out there.  At least the experience now would make wright a better player.
Best duo since...

I'd give
Wright ALL of Barnes' minutes as of right now.

He's a bonehead with the ball.

Baron shows little to no interest on D. Although he might've just looked bad against Paul. BD's ankles must be sore after being broken repeatedly.

Tonight is exactly why i think Warrior Nation over-rates Jackson.

Jackson going to the rim > Jacking up long jumpers.

More Wright in the starting lineup please.

Defense
where is it? dubs have to come out and play hard defense from the get go. I would also like to see more ball movement than one on one
brb, going to ORACLE

We can't fight bigs
Whenever an opponent has a solid, scoring and rebounding big, that player can be guaranteed a stat-crazy night against the Warriors. Tyson Chandler is the latest to dismantle the Dubs inside, very similar to how we were handled by Andrew Bynum. Without a major inside presence, the Dubs will continue to lose games like this.
