Warriors Call Up Kosta

Send away DJ, bring up Kosta.

http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=6794

The Golden State Warriors have recalled center Kosta Perovic (COAST-a PEAR-a-vich) from the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League, Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin announced today.

Perovic, who was originally assigned to the Jam on November 18, 2007, appeared in 19 games for Bakersfield, averaging 8.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.37 blocks in 22.1 minutes per contest.  The 22-year-old tallied a season-high 18 points in 28 minutes at the Utah Flash on December 22.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

D-League Stats: O'Bryant vs. Perovic
I decided to do a quick per 48 minute stat comparison of O'Bryants D-League stats from '06-07 to Perovic's D-League stats from '07-08.

O'Bryant: 15.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, 3.6 off. rebounds, 4.7 blocks, 2.3 assists, 3.3 turnovers, 5.9 fouls
Perovic:  18.7 points, 12.4 rebounds, 3.9 off. rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 0.7 assists, 4.6 turnovers, 6.8 fouls

Hmmmm....

3 blocks per 48 minutes from a 7'2 guy in the D-League is pretty weaksauce. Perovic has higher turnover and foul rates than POB, suggesting he might be even less NBA-ready than POB was as a rookie. Of course when you consider that these are D-League stats extrapolated over 48 minutes, neither guy seems very impressive.

I'm just bewildered as to why...
...they're calling him up at this moment after cutting Mbenga. Would Nelso even rather play him than let POB get some time?

cosmetic changes?
already paying Kosta to do what Mbanga might've been doing (or not) and even if we do add CJWatshisname from Dleague, these aren't the roster upgrades we need so much as churning the faces at the end of the bench imo

makes sense to me
Hey Pree, so glad you are back with such timely posts.  And speaking of low posts, it makse sense to use the money already invested in Kosta and bring him back; or, with any luck, there might be a trade that involves him.

Makes sense
For now .. they might want to see what he's got

Kosta doesn't have much....
from what I can see.  I watched a game the other day on tv and Perovich looked stiff and did not run very well.  I'd rather see POB in games. Kosta sucks!

Perovic "to get conditioning work"
Additionally, rookie center Kosta Perovic is being recalled from the Warriors' D-League affiliate, the Bakersfield Jam, although Mullin said that's more to get conditioning work in than to serve as a replacement for Mbenga.

"conditioning work"?  hmmm

meanwhile, back at the ranch:

Nelson said that with Mbenga's departure, the backup job will fall back to O'Bryant -- who has been practically a ghost since a disastrous appearance against the Los Angeles Lakers in early December, playing just three minutes since then.

"He's been working hard, he's kept a good attitude," Nelson said of O'Bryant. "Even when Mbenga was ahead of him, he kept working hard. I still think he'll make it one day. Whether he's ready or not now, I don't know. He'll get an opportunity once in a while and we'll see how he does."

and then there's Brandon who needs a place to lay down:

Rookie forward Brandan Wright, who earned his first NBA start on Friday against New Orleans, did not practice. He was ill with the flu, although it looked like something worse to Nelson, who reported that Wright had "passed out" in the locker room. "I think Al put something in his coffee," Nelson said. "I think I played him too many minutes (Friday)." According to a team spokesman, Wright was actually following the orders of athletic trainer Tom Abdenour; since there wasn't enough room on the training tables, Abdenour told Wright to get some rest in the locker room instead.

POB
I figured it out:

POB will get backup minutes as a showcase for potential deals.

I should have thought of that earlier. It's also why Pietrus has been getting burn, I bet.

Maybe
Whether or not a trade is imminent, the Dubs management seems to be using this time of year to showcase some of our guys. Between B Wright, Kosta, POB and MP2 playing more and all the holes in our rotation, you have to figure that something is going to go down.

Then again with some easier competition and more home games coming in the next month or two they may just think that this will be the best time to work in some of the young guys without sacrificing wins (though they did show that they were willing to put in Wright against a top-notch team in a critical game).

Kosta to Kosta
Man this kid is so below average.  He has trouble running up and down the court, he is clumsy, he has no touch around the hoop, he gets boxed out by guys like Baron Davis, he is very tentative and lastly, he has a very low hoops IQ especially on D.  He should have never ever been signed in the off season. Nellie is funny on this one!
