OPEN THREAD: Game 35 - Spurs @ Warriors

2176788602_e4a3c27dea.jpg

Warriors (W-L): 19-15
Spurs (W-L): 23-9
TV: NBA TV, FSN Bay Area
Radio: KNBR 680

Using 8Monta's apt metaphor for the recent stormy weather in the bay to talk about the arrival of the CJ Watson, aka the Quiet Storm, I will then resignify that to talk about the Warriors 2 game skid, which is stormy as well.  Lets hope the new personnel changes can give us a good nights sleep "between the sheets" after the game against the Spurs.

Star-divide

The Warriors are still searching for that elusive 20th win after getting exposed against two top tier teams of the Westcoast conference.  The Hornets and Mavs games brought back memories, for me at least, of the the Warriors-Jazz playoff series, where it looked like a Junior Varsity team vs. the Varsity Squad.  We don't need to rehash what's already been said, but these teams were just, in the words of Daft Punk, 'harder, better, faster, stronger.'  And pretty much at all positions.

The Warriors are a crafty team that needs to learn to adjust and exploit team weakness; though, we've looked more like a one trick pony more than anything recently.  Either that or we're regressing to the novelty of the NBA, where Nelson's game of defying basketball conventions that "size doesn't matter" (try telling that to the ladies...) is actually exposing some of our greatest weaknesses (size, muscle, and defense) than becoming a real advantage on either end of the floor.

The Spurs are coming full force, though somewhat wobbly, with Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili both suffering injuries in recent games.  The Warriors did a solid job containing the Duncan-less Spurs last time they met.  The keys to the game will be staying in front of Parker and keeping him out of the key.  Lets hope Monta and Baron can keep up with him.  A match-up on the court that will be worth checking out is who will get more flop calls: Monta or Manu?

This is the Warriors longest losing streak since opening up the season.  Lets hope they put an end to this before it spirals out of control like the Warriors have the last two years around this 25-30 game mark.

Predictions:

* Warriors by 5
* Matt Bonner is FINALLY contained...only because he doesn't play since Duncan is back.
* Harrington continues to be offensively efficient: 21 points in ONLY 22 minutes of play.
* Brandan Wright plays 8 minutes
* Quiet Storm sings some smooth RNB at the end of the game, sending folks off feeling romantic.  What a way to end a win!

Can the Warriors end their losing streak tonight?  What are your thoughts?  Let us know how you're feeling in the comments!

This would be a huge win
With 2 straight losses and the Spurs playing at full strength this has all the makings of a "Warriors by 1" prediction. It's definitely not a do or die with the Warriors potentially favorites in 10 of the next 11. But if the Ws could get this one, then we will certainly be in the playoffs. AGAIN!
Where have you gone Jud Buechler?

I was
reading the game preview over at ESPN.com and they list Manu Ginobili as OUT for this game... is that true? Does anyone no anything about that?
By the way... Warriors by 4!
Great games from Baron and Al Harrington!

Qk start?
GSW has gotta try to get outta the gate fast to take advantage of Duncan's gimpy knee, which he banged into Corey Maggette on a pick-and-roll late in their game vs. the Clips. We absolutely cannot give up a double digit lead right away like we have in recent games ...

This isn't a make or break game, but it would be a great bounce back from the disappointing effort vs. the Hornet's at the Oracle.

Go Dubs.

Pietrus at PF
Has it ever worked? Seriously?

Nellie is senile man. Going small is only an advantage when we actually gain an advantage. If we're gonna suck while going small, maybe a solution is, i dunno, using our big men in whom our future depends?

Question for anyone:
Why are they trying to fight over the screen on Parker instead of trying to go under 20+ feet away? He can't shoot from out there, he's not even allowed to shoot from out there.

Is it to make the Spurs move the ball around to open up steals?

We need jack on the floor, but in a much more reserved role offensively.  He has value because he is, literally, a jack of all trades, except that when he plays like Lebron James the results are Qyntel Woods-like.

Thank you Warriors!
That was a phenomenal game.

The grit and never give up attitude that the Warriors showed in the 4th and OT was something we have not seen from a W's team since the 70's.  Never give up, keep playing D.  Wow.

One criticism that I need to say, "What is Pietrus doing at the end of regulation?  You are up by 3 with 5 secs. left, a guy drives and you leave the man at the 3 pt line?"  That could have been a crusher if it cost the W's the game.  But I will say he hit some clutch shots and got some key rebounds in the 4th.  But when will the boneheaded plays end?

Nothing better than "The City".

by philsmith75 on Jan 7, 2008 10:33 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

When
Parker hit that 3 at the end of regulation I expected the Warriors to have a meltdown and lose.  But what a game! Baron played like an MVP, Jack was hitting all those clutch free throws, Pietrus was actually a positive, Azubuike didn't know how to miss, Biedrins was a force inside (though that does not mean stopping Duncan), AND they hit their 3's.  It was a great game.

OMG!
IF ONLY WE HAD A BIG MAN WHO COULD PLAY DEFENSE IN THE MIDDLE!

OMG WTF BBQ! WHO WILL WE USE TO GUARD OTHER BIGS IN THE PLAYOFFS?!

WHY AREN'T WE UP AGAINST THE LUXURY TAX!

Wait, the Spurs have a great big man and a huge payroll and lost. Hrm. Maybe all that noise isn't really analysis at all, but just noise. It sounds just as bad when I type it as when other people type it.

Anyways, terrific game- i'd argue this was our finest game of the year overall, beating the best team in the league with a full roster. In overtime, no less.

Overall, the two big points to me:

Offensive efficiency. Winning the turnover battle against the Spurs is no mean feat; neither is shooting over 50% against the best defensive team in the L; we even WON THE BATTLE OF THE BOARDS

Defensive intensity. Again, winning the TO battle is both offense and defense for us. We closed out better and cleaned the glass, and were excellent against the pick and roll, even earning a few TO's while defending it. This will not show up in the box score, but Biedrins' feet and good teamwork took away alot of what the Spurs were trying to do.

Individual accolates:

Good lord, Biedrins stood tall against the best big man in the league, mostly in one on one coverage. He picked up fouls, but I can hardly fault him for getting beat a few times by Parker/Duncan's pick and roll (Again, they have rings for a reason...they are pretty good). Mostly AB stayed down, used his length to bother Duncan, and used his feet to stay in good position.

Defending Duncan AND getting rebounds...thats huge responsibility for one man, but Biedrins did it. Racking up 13/10 with 3 assists 2 steals and 2 blocks is a darn good all around line, but more important was his OVERALL EFFECT ON THE OFFENSE. The Warriors ran the pick and roll to death up high with Biedrins, and when he didn't get a bucket, he started sucking in 2, sometimes 3 defenders because he went to the proper spot with a hard cut and finished early. After a while, the rest of the Warriors had miles of space to operate after running the pick and roll because the Spurs were scrambling to recover.

I've been yammering about the high pick and roll forever now, and it feels darn good to be vindicated with a win in which we were committed to running it. The Suns do it with Amare and Nash, and it works. We did it and it reduced the amount of one v one we had to rely on and got us better shots.

See also the time he pushed the ball up court himself and found Azubuike for the easy bucket. Thank you and keep it up, big man.

(Poll: who thinks a guy who can do a pretty good job on Tim Duncan is worth drafting?)

(Poll 2: who thinks a guy who can do a pretty good job on Tim Duncan is worth re-signing?)

Second, Baron Davis was magnificent. Utterly magnificent. Very few forced shots, 9/10 from the line, zero turnovers, 14 assists, and he controlled the game by creating havoc in tandem with Biedrins, scoring when the opportunity presented itself (often). He also beat the league's premier perimeter defender not named Artest, blowing by Bowen with his speed and finishing against every Spur with his strahngth.

Third, Mickael Pietrus had the best game of the year- but he's still an idiot. He is, literally, the gift that keeps taking away. The box score seems quality- 13 and 6 on 5/9 shooting. Look again and u see 4 fouls in 16 minutes, and crucially for those watching the game, a blown assignment on the Parker corner 3p, where he left an open 3p shooter to watch a cutting man despite the Warriors holding the three point lead. Absolutely wretched team defense, fortunately Nellie sobered up and put Azubuike in shortly after the start of the OT. Note that Azubuike was covering that corner man on a later possession when the Spurs were still in striking distance. Team defense- pay attention to it. I will give Pietrus credit for a massive block on Duncan that was wiped away on a ticky tack call by the refs (though Pietrus asks for it with all his reaching). Overall his activity produced results, ut his stupidity canceled them out, which is probably the best we can hope for.

Fourth, Kelenna Azubuike is a godsend. He is an absolute stud. This isn't the first time he's been perfect from the field while taking a fair amount of shots- 7 of 7 for 16 points, and throw in 6 boards in in a mere 24 minutes. This dude needs to get 30+ MPG a game. Like Biedrins, he's just in the spot at the right time through good awareness and understanding, and that is absolutely essential to getting all the easy buckets and loose balls.

I was at the game...
...and something to note that may or may not have came across on TV is that prior to the inbounds on the Spurs game tying three, Baron was yelling at Pietrus and gesturing him around on the court. I'm not sure what he was telling him to do, but MP looked confused and Baron practically dragged him over to stay with Duncan on the play.

by Zack Vank on Jan 8, 2008 12:45 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yes
After the parker 3, as well, while Pietrus was talking back into the huddle you could see Nelson gesturing in frustration, as if to say, WHAT WAS THAT?!

3 point lead with time running out, you stay home and invite any lay up the other team wants. Even if he got near the driving Spur, he probably would have fouled, leading to a potential game tying 3p play.

He should not be in in crunch time.

Cap'n Jack
was at his maddening finest tonight.  Terrible shooting, a couple of foolish decisions with the ball--but his aggressiveness to the basket early in OT helped put the Spurs on their heels and into the penalty situation, which erased the momentum shift (not to be forgotten, especially as the Spurs won the tip and scored on their first possession in OT and it looked like oh well the champs are doing their thing) that started with Pietrus's Pietrusism at the end of regulation.

(Lest Jack and Pietrus get lumped into one category--they giveth, they taketh away; they do dazzling, they do stupid, same diff--consider the impact each has on team defense.)

Then, also not to be overlooked, perfect free throw shooting and 4 of 11 from three, most of it late in the game when it had to fall or else we fall.  You get the good and the bad together with Jack, and there's not much use wishing or pleading or hollering for him to be more sensible, take fewer shots, and so on. His brickery was essential to our faltering first quarter; his steadiness essential to our victorious OT.

I swear.
I don't know if it is just me but we have the worst free throw defense in the league.  Why does everyone always seem to have godly free throw percentage against us?

Good win, Dubs.  Happy Days.

Lol
I like how you said free throw defense, as if we can actually have a say in it. But I agree with you nonetheless. teams have career nights at the free throw line against us. i.e. Timmy Duncan. (Almost career night at the line)

2-0 against the Spurs!
Yeah I know, the first one was without Duncan but tonight's victory can't be overlooked!!
The best part was that Duncan was healthy and got his usual 20-30 points, Ginobli same and even Parker went off, but we won bc we hustled harder and were more clutch.

If we beat a healthy Spurs team
in San Antonio, we will have a bunch of people believing that "we own the Spurs." And I might be one of them, if that next win is convincing enough.

Monta?
Don't know if many notice but he had a few bad defense breakdowns today like jumping in front of Duncan to give him the 3 point play and leaving the corner 3 shooter wide open, which hes done quite a few times this year(Vince Carter Arghh)I really don't understand why he keeps going in front of pick n roll instead of behind especially on driving point guards like Parker N Iverson who much rather drive to basket 90% of time. This is by no means a knock on Ellis i think he is a very good player that will keep getting better year after year I just hope his defense IQ progresses along with his offense IQ,just a thought.

by Dopey on Jan 8, 2008 12:34 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

ellis IQ
Ellis IQ is what, imo, what will prevent him from bring a starter. Too many breakdowns on a team that's already shaky mentally (Baron and Jack get stupid at times too).

Stpeping in front of Duncan that deep is a dumb decision and lead to the worst possible result, and yes, he blew the coverage multiple times on defense.
Team defense is understanding the scheme and what you want to deny and also awareness of what the opponent wants to do on a given play. All the speed in the world, which he purportedly has, is not as fast as the speed of a good thought. Not even Ellis can out run the neurons of smarter opponents.

The pick and roll defense, however, I don't think is necessarily his fault. The coaches dicatate pick and role defensive philosophy. Nellie's said multiple times he wants to "blitz" the pick and roll, which is an aggressive plan. The guard goes over and the big man jump in front. The goal is for the big man to stop penetration, force the opposing guard to stop and (hopefully) reverse direction. In that time, the defending small (Ellis) is supposed to get around the screen and either get back in front or trap the offensive guard to force a TO or at least severely disrupt the offensive team's flow.

Ellis seems half-hearted or lost when he's forced to be the guy on an island up top. It's not his fault he's going over, but I don't think he understands the goal of the blitz, or is just really bad at executing it. He will overpursue while taking a bad angle, so even if he gets around the pick (easy with his speed), and vaguely in front of the opposing guard, his feet are out of position and his momentum is carrying him too far in one direction. The opposing guard easy blows by, leaving Biedrins blitzing nothing, Ellis in the dust, and 5 on 3 for the rest of the team. Thats how u end up with wide open shots for the other team.

Watch Baron defend the pick and roll- he makes sure he tells Biedrins or any of our bigs what to do, directs them to the right spot on the floor. H e'll cheat early and ahead of the opposing screener so he can get around it without giving up position- or even if he gets beat, forcing the opposing guard where help is waiting. That is good defense and comes with experience, but what makes Baron good is that he understands what he needs to do to h elp the rest of his teammates on defense.

No doubt going to college and playing in a more complex team defense would have helped Ellis, but alas, it is too late and all we can do is hope he picks it up eventually.

Sorry
The above comment was poorly written.

First, the reference to Baron and Jack getting stupid had to do with their shot selection (and Jack arguing calls futilely)

Second, the Ellis pick and roll defense...choosing to go over the top is not his fault, how he does it is.

Just clarifying for anyone that bothers to read my jumble of text.

nah
it wasn't half bad, imo. I agree, college would have helped Monta's game out a lot. It's painfully obvious that this is the first time that he's had to play in any semblance of a system. The fact is he helps win games with his shooting.  When Jackson goes cold, Monta's jumps shooting really helps out until Jax gets the stroke back. that is impossible to show through stats. He will never be the player B-Diddy is (especially on defense) but he can contribute in his own way. But I definitely feel you on the fact that he drives me crazy on the defensive end.

Regular season
If these past few games mean anything, we now own the Spurs and the Mavs own us.  Doubt it.

But awesome win last night.  Can't wait to see what CJ Watson brings to the table.
