RECAP: Warriors 130, Spurs 121 - Can You Stand the Rain?

Yahoo! Boxscore

The Warriors weathered the storm.  The quiet storm that is.

Off the bench buddies, Harrington and Pietrus work on their double teaming. Or do they look like they're taking pics for the Sadie Hawkins dance?

Like the U.S. Postal Service (bless them!), the Warriors managed to battle through all sorts of bad weather  (literal and figurative); the recent poor starts, horrible shot selection, porous defense, lack of bench support is equivalent to rain, sleet, snow and high winds.  But even that was not going to stop the Warriors from attacking the Spurs.  I know "Quiet Storm" is CJ Watson's nickname, but it is totally better suited for Tim Duncan who steadily and unexcitingly (though highly effectively) worked against Harrington and Biedrins, putting them both in foul trouble.  Like an annoying light drizzle, Duncan quietly and steadily put up 32 points and 13 boards.  Yet that wasn't nearly enough as the Warriors, like the rains last week in the bay area, refused to let up.

Star-divide

From the moment that they "turned down the lights" for the introductions, you know it was going to be a party like 'Monsoon Wedding' up in the Roaracle (especially since all the players were drenched in sweat much like the actors/actresses drenched in summer rains).  The game featured impressive displays of offensive firepower (251 points combined) from both teams.  The Warriors, despite their first quarter woes and recent shooting slumps from the likes of Jackson, Barnes, Azuibuke and Pietrus, somehow managed to find the bottom of the net: 51% from the field, 45% from beyond the arc, and 88% from the line.  Maybe it was just the matchups for the night, but the Warriors looked like they had made some adjustments from their disasterous games against the Mavs and Hornets, particularly on the defensive end.

Biedrins gets his hand in Parker's face...and possibly a knee to the groin.

We should probably just start calling the Warriors "El Nino."  Doesn't it seem like anytime there are irregular weather patterns, we just blame it on "El Nino"?  Its like anytime there is some weather irregularities that are unexplainable to meteorologists, "El Nino" is there to assuage the average citizen with never any additional information of what that actually means.  The Warriors inconsistency, like "El Nino" is unexplainable and when it rains, it pours.  But on the flipside, when the going is good, the hot hand and defensive prowess is contagious like chicken pox amongst young kids.  But maybe last nights win was a step in the right direction in the sense that it wasn't just another display of streaky play between quarters but a relatively consistent, for this game at least, attempt at seriously controlling tempo.

Given that the Warriors mantra is to outscore opponents, the Warriors looked to make good on their defensive shortcomings of the last few games.  This isn't to suggest that the Warriors were shutting the Spurs down.  Parker, Ginobili, and Duncan each had great games (offensively) and Ime Udoka and Michael Finley were often left wide open, either in the corner for a wide open 3 or in the lane for a layup.  The Warriors did not rotate particularly well, which explains the wide open wing player.  Yet, inspite of these typical problems that plague the Warriors night in night out, they prevented the Spurs from going on any long, uninhibited runs.  Matching them point for point might explain this, but the Warriors also forced them, in some ways, into  poor outside shots.  With the exception of Duncan's low-post work, the Warriors generally collapsed and crashed the defensive boards or clogged the lane.  We could attribute this to the fact that the Spurs lack any real efficient big men like the Hornets though.  But still, the evenness of the rebounding is partially indicative of how the Warriors did not just leave Biedrins alone to handle the rebounding duties alone like some other games of late.

Pietrus must have knew Parker liked to drive baseline, poking the ball out at the right time!

In fact, Pietrus has put together two solid games in a row now...at least on the defensive end.  Don't let his 5-9 shooting fool you; he is still shooting erratically.  Stepback, fadeaway jumpers from 22 feet don't exactly sound like great shots do they?  Yet, like the Jazz series (when he wasn't bricking free throws), Pietrus was crashing the boards and hustling on the defensive end.  6 boards doesn't sound like a whole lot for the night, but he also managed to alter a few shots in the lane.  We've seen Pietrus do this a few times now, which is hustle back on fast breaks to block/alter layups/dunks.  His defensive play has earned him some extra minutes (if not just his potential trade value) and maybe his confidence will boost his offensive output, too.

capt.739e4d0b14dd48839cae810bcb6f5fc0.spurs_warriors_basketball_oas104.jpg
His own poor shooting was too difficult for Jackson, himself, to bear. Ginobili and Duncan console

The Warriors finally got some contribution from the bench.  Azubuike was a perfect 7-7 from the floor and it probably helped that the Warriors were calling his number more this game than in the last few.   He showed his deep, midrange, and inside game tonight making the most out of limited minutes.  It was nice to see Jackson defer to him and others a few times, setting screens or seeing/passing to him for some open threes.

Though Jackson shot pretty horribly this game, you could see that he took a stronger leadership role, seeking to make up for it on the defensive end and even in distribution.  Okay okay, he still shot 21 shots and bricked a ton, enough to keep a mason in business.  Even Barnett noted that he was pressing a little.  But Jackson, seems to be taking his captain role a little stronger, facilitated the offense some, looking to find Azubuike and Biedrins on several occasions.  Granted, his passes weren't exactly crisp and at times off or forced through a crowd of Spurs players.  But that's a step in the right direction?

0198a201eec77b719d543151ca83c87f-getty-76076215rw024_warriors_hornets.jpg
Biedrins finds great position for two of his 13 points

But he found his shot when it mattered most.  Jackson and Baron Davis were like E-40's classic track "Hurricane" (or "Slurricane"); they were "strong enough to start an engine maaaain."  Jackson and Davis made clutch shot after clutch shot (we're talking about freethrows here).  Interestingly (and sadly), they combined for 19 of the Warriors 23 made freethrows; those free throws at the end really mattered too in the 4th as the Spur even led at one point (and the Warriors shooting poorly for a bit) but couldn't seem to keep their hands to themselves.  When will the Warriors attack the basket more, getting them some trips to the charity stripe?  When will they listen to the gospel of Jim Barnett and even out that free throw disparity that opponents use to kill them almost every game?  Or create open shots through better ball movement or movement without the ball?  Do the Warriors believe, as JB (or was it Bloodsweatanddonuts) alluded to in a recent comment, that throwing up threes will open up the lane like a balanced running game will open up the passing attack?

f5c8d731d205c3c8430d09772f59eff7-getty-76076215rw022_warriors_hornets.jpg
Even Jessica Alba is disgusted with the poor ball movement. Or she wonders why she and Cash are having that baby...

Anyway, Jackson and Davis were two of six people in double figures.  Biedrins, one of those six, had another solid game.  His offensive repertoire has improved and he seems more patient and confident in the lower block, up to what looks to be 6 feet from the basket (twice his game last year).  He moved well without the ball a few times, finding open spots when teammates drove.  Further, team defense improved some this game as well as boxing out, which no longer forced Biedrins to fend off 3 opponents to grab the board.  But was it a little disconcerting to hear Barnett and Fitz mention how Biedrins struggles physically and tires quickly against larger centers?  There are quite a few centers out there that are bigger and stronger than him; Biedrins build doesn't necessarily scream center either.  And if his game is improving like it has been the last few games, we're definitely going to need him on the court longer than the 26-30 minutes a night that he's usually getting (40 last night).  It's evident that he's feeling comfortable offensively and slowly blossoming into the player that a lot of us hope for, but will that offset the defensive liabilities that he might create (perhaps Amare Stoudemire is a good example of this).

But the most important stat of last nite might have to be this:

Name Min FG 3Pt FT +/- Off Reb Ast TO Stl BS BA PF Pts

  M. Bonner 8:49 1-5 0-2 0-0 -3 2 3 0 0 1 0 0 0 2

Though Udoka took on the role of potential Warrior Killer, it was nice to know that some completely random scrub didn't cost the Warriors the game.  Maybe the Warriors have made some adjustments....?

gsom-warrior-wonder.jpg

The battle between the top rate point guards lived up to the hype, more so than my Manu vs. Monta flop-fest.  Baron Davis deserves the Warrior Wonder for providing some clutch shooting when it counts and for making those free throws.  Thank you!!!  It was Baron Davis' party and he had +14 vip guests, as he found hooked up his friends for easy buckets, netting 14 assists to go with his 34 points and 6 boards.

Jessica Alba is hot ...
She is prego now though :(

Tim Duncan had this to say "They're going to take some crazy shots,On a night like tonight where those shots go down, they're a very dangerous club, and unfortunately for us, they went down at some inopportune times."

What a little b**, he reminds me of Kobe Bryant.

If we lost, you think Baron would of been like, "They play pretty dirty and when the refs don't call fouls then the Spurs are a very dangerous club"

Dirty Bowen
Did anyone catch that Bowen was trying to do his famous leg crap to Baron last night on one of the 3 point play Diddy had in the fourth quarter? If you go check out the daily top 10 plays of last night's games, I think its number 7 and you can clearly see it. What a dirty player man. I saw Diddy talking with the refs after the play and did not actually know what was going on, but after seeing the replay..all i can say is Bowen plays dirty man

Parker's lost luster
I lost all respect for TP after watching him kick a guy's groin last night on the way to the hoop - and refs gave him the call.

Come to think of it, seemed like every few minutes some of our guys were holding their gut/ribs as if they had just gotten cheap shotted ...

haha yea I remember that
I think BD got hit in the "groin" then Jim Barnett said something along the lines of, "And all of a sudden he will feel better" and BD crosses TP and makes an important basket...then BD goes back to holding his groin...It kinda made laugh that every second someone else was holding thier groin and all of a sudden he would have to all of a sudden get better against the Spurs.

MP and Other Thots
Agree that MP played a much better game last night: he was active on defense, passedup bad shots, and was typically good on his baseline three.  BUT, he still made a couple of bonehead plays that almost cost us the game: that moving screen was bad enough, but his failure to get out on Parker for that very open game tying three at the end of regulation was simply inexcusable.  And the worst part of it is, he probably still doesn't get that he screwed that up big time.

Otherwise, great game by what now must be some very tired Warriors.  Although I'm the biggest proponent of a 36 minute max for BD, there ARE a few games in the regular season where that rule can be bent, and last night -- against the Spurs and on a two-game losing streak -- was one of those games.  Still, we won't often get away with playing BD and Jack in the high 40s, Monta over 50, and even AB -- who was simply terrific (if lonely in the middle) -- had over 40 minutes.

Granted, Nellie couldn't really use Barnes or BW -- and was stuck with only seven guys -- but let's hope that's the last time for such a short rotation and big BD/Jack minutes for a LONG time.

reposting from game thread
OMG!

IF ONLY WE HAD A BIG MAN WHO COULD PLAY DEFENSE IN THE MIDDLE!

OMG WTF BBQ! WHO WILL WE USE TO GUARD OTHER BIGS IN THE PLAYOFFS?!

WHY AREN'T WE UP AGAINST THE LUXURY TAX!

Wait, the Spurs have a great big man and a huge payroll and lost. Hrm. Maybe all that noise isn't really analysis at all, but just noise. It sounds just as bad when I type it as when other people type it.

Anyways, terrific game- i'd argue this was our finest game of the year overall, beating the best team in the league with a full roster. In overtime, no less.

Overall, the two big points to me:

Offensive efficiency. Winning the turnover battle against the Spurs is no mean feat; neither is shooting over 50% against the best defensive team in the L; we even WON THE BATTLE OF THE BOARDS

Defensive intensity. Again, winning the TO battle is both offense and defense for us. We closed out better and cleaned the glass, and were excellent against the pick and roll, even earning a few TO's while defending it. This will not show up in the box score, but Biedrins' feet and good teamwork took away alot of what the Spurs were trying to do.

Individual accolates:

Good lord, Biedrins stood tall against the best big man in the league, mostly in one on one coverage. He picked up fouls, but I can hardly fault him for getting beat a few times by Parker/Duncan's pick and roll (Again, they have rings for a reason...they are pretty good). Mostly AB stayed down, used his length to bother Duncan, and used his feet to stay in good position.

Defending Duncan AND getting rebounds...thats huge responsibility for one man, but Biedrins did it. Racking up 13/10 with 3 assists 2 steals and 2 blocks is a darn good all around line, but more important was his OVERALL EFFECT ON THE OFFENSE. The Warriors ran the pick and roll to death up high with Biedrins, and when he didn't get a bucket, he started sucking in 2, sometimes 3 defenders because he went to the proper spot with a hard cut and finished early. After a while, the rest of the Warriors had miles of space to operate after running the pick and roll because the Spurs were scrambling to recover.

I've been yammering about the high pick and roll forever now, and it feels darn good to be vindicated with a win in which we were committed to running it. The Suns do it with Amare and Nash, and it works. We did it and it reduced the amount of one v one we had to rely on and got us better shots.

See also the time he pushed the ball up court himself and found Azubuike for the easy bucket. Thank you and keep it up, big man.

(Poll: who thinks a guy who can do a pretty good job on Tim Duncan is worth drafting?)

(Poll 2: who thinks a guy who can do a pretty good job on Tim Duncan is worth re-signing?)

Second, Baron Davis was magnificent. Utterly magnificent. Very few forced shots, 9/10 from the line, zero turnovers, 14 assists, and he controlled the game by creating havoc in tandem with Biedrins, scoring when the opportunity presented itself (often). He also beat the league's premier perimeter defender not named Artest, blowing by Bowen with his speed and finishing against every Spur with his strahngth.

Third, Mickael Pietrus had the best game of the year- but he's still an idiot. He is, literally, the gift that keeps taking away. The box score seems quality- 13 and 6 on 5/9 shooting. Look again and u see 4 fouls in 16 minutes, and crucially for those watching the game, a blown assignment on the Parker corner 3p, where he left an open 3p shooter to watch a cutting man despite the Warriors holding the three point lead. Absolutely wretched team defense, fortunately Nellie sobered up and put Azubuike in shortly after the start of the OT. Note that Azubuike was covering that corner man on a later possession when the Spurs were still in striking distance. Team defense- pay attention to it. I will give Pietrus credit for a massive block on Duncan that was wiped away on a ticky tack call by the refs (though Pietrus asks for it with all his reaching). Overall his activity produced results, ut his stupidity canceled them out, which is probably the best we can hope for.

Fourth, Kelenna Azubuike is a godsend. He is an absolute stud. This isn't the first time he's been perfect from the field while taking a fair amount of shots- 7 of 7 for 16 points, and throw in 6 boards in in a mere 24 minutes. This dude needs to get 30+ MPG a game. Like Biedrins, he's just in the spot at the right time through good awareness and understanding, and that is absolutely essential to getting all the easy buckets and loose balls.

seriously though
on any other team AB would be getting real burn (probably close to 40 per) and probably would be putting up LaMarcus Aldridge numbers. He can ball and he displays strong on-court awareness.

More on Pietrus
From Nellie's post game:

"Well, I'm exhausted.  I don't know why.  I didn't play a minute.  It wasn't looking good when we gave up that three. It was totally against the game plan that we had at that particular time: not to give up the three, don't help, give the two.  It was a breakdown by one of the players.  It wasn't looking good at that time."

I'm looking at you, frenchman.

Some Thoughts

I found it odd that after the walk it up, slow down first quarter, the game became uptempo. It's like the Warriors suckered the Spurs into playing the Warrior style of play. Maybe all those Tony Parker layups helped keep the rhythm of the game going.

Another thing that was infuriating is in the first quarter, they took jump shot after jump shot after jump shot. Nobody drove the ball into the lane to try to go to the line or set someone else up. If you look at the shot chart, there's 5 shots within 5 feet and nearly everything else is 20 feet or longer. Once they started missing from the outside, the Spurs let them have the jumpers and the Warriors shot themselves into a deficit. Someone needs to recognize this and change up the offense when it gets stagnant with the jumpers.

Lastly, props to AB for holdin it down in the middle. He entered the game in the 4th with 5 minutes remaining and 5 fouls. 10 minutes later, by the end of overtime and multiple 1on1's with Tim Duncan, he had not fouled out. That's tough to do. Also, they've actually started to run plays for him. IIRC they had him flash across the lane as someone screened his man to get him open. He was fed the ball in the lane, got fouled and knocked down both free throws. Good to see him get more involved.

they ran that inbound play for third game in a row
Where the inbounder hits the man at the top of the 3 pt arc, who lobs it to Biendris for the dunk.  Woulda worked for the third time in a row, too, if the pass wasn't a little low.  Or was it The Big Fundamental's 5-ft long arms?

Lotsa free throws in this contest...bad calls on both ends.  I don't know where it was here that I read someone mentioning how petulant TD, TP, and Ginobli can become when they don't get every single call ever.  That weak flop on Baron's pass/crash to Kaz was lame.  I wanted to jump on a plane and yell at Manu "dude you're not in argentina and this isn't soccer; it's a man's game."  Then again I've wanted to do that for every playoff game he's ever appeared in.  Flop flop flop.  He and Devin Harris should start a club.  Fisher too.  Monta Ellis is getting there.  I hate that!!

Anyway, a good time had by all.

I can't stand Cash Warren!
That slack-faced loser has gone and ruined Jessica Alba's innocent beauty!  She's still hot, but now there is a harder edge there.  She is looking more and more like the generic hollywood starlet.  Too much makeup, hiding stress and tiredness, and it all started happening after he broke up with her.  And now she's back with him and having his baby!  It's so sad.  She's just young and misguided.  At least she knows a good basketball team.  It shows she's got heart at her core.  I hope when the thing with Cash Warren comes crashing down, she finds the inner strength to come out on top.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but we owe Jessica a lot for the Warriors resurgence.

I loved Andris and Azubuike's lines.
