OPEN THREAD: Game #36 - Warriors @ Trailblazers

Warriors (W-L): 20-15

Trail Blazers (W-L): 21-13

Time: 7:00pm PST

TV:FSN Bay Area

Radio: KNBR 680

I liked the prospect of facing the Blazers in late November, back when they were 5-12 and looking like a team who was going to play out the season waiting on their franchise center to return. But noooo, they just had to go and win 13 in a row, and 16 of 17. Now they sit atop the Northwest division, 3 games out of the top record in the West, and very much in the thick of the playoff race. From doormat to dominant in a month. WoW! They're trying to take a spot away from us!

This game is like déjà vu. The last time the Warriors played the Blazers in Portland, guess who the Warriors had just defeated? The world champion San Antonio Spurs. Let's hope the result of this game isn't a repeat of what happened last time.

Blaze a path on through the jump (oh that was a good one).

Star-divide

When Brandon Roy is the leading scorer, the Blazers are 13-4.

When Martell Webster is the leading scorer, the Blazers are 4-1.

When LaMarcus Aldridge is the leading scorer, the Blazers are 3-7.

What does that mean? I have no idea, but I'm even more scared of Brandan Roy now. Webster would scare me too but it's too small of a sample size for me to be scared of him too. Anyways, Roy strikes fear in the heart of many opponents now. He's their closer, the guy who takes and makes shots at the end of the shot clock, at the end of quarters, and most importantly takes all the big shots. He makes everyone around him better. And you know what? He might not play, he's questionable tonight after getting injured in the last game.

But it's really not just Roy. It's the entire cast of characters that can beat you. Martell Webster has come along quite nicely this year and been a solid role player thus far. In the last game against the Warriors he got injured and missed the 2nd half so we didn't get to really see what he can do. You also have LaMarcus Aldridge down low who didn't even play in the Blazers 10 point win over the Warriors last game. He's going to be a wee bit of trouble. And then we have to deal with Warrior killer Travis Outlaw.

But the player I'm really scared of? Joel Pryzbilla. He's a monster! Okay, not so much, but he did roll off 15-10 on 6-7 shooting in the last game against the Warriors. That's so Matt Bonner-esque. Here's hoping he repeats what Matt Bonner's 2nd game against the Warriors was like. Shut down their wily vet Pryzbilla and you shut down the Blazers. It's like cutting off the snake's head (I just watched Sahara and that's how they defeated the enemy).

BUT, the Warriors can win in Portland though it will be extremely tough. If they can carry over the momentum from the win over the Spurs with the hot shooting at the end, perhaps they stand a chance. Their defense will have to be top notch with the stupid fouls being nonexistent. Offensively, the team needs to be patient. In the last game, the Blazers let the Warriors shoot outside all they wanted and the Warriors shot themselves into a hole. They'll need to create for each other and take shots within the flow of the offense to be effective tonight. It'll be a tough game but they can definitely win this.

Go Warriors!

Predictions

  • Warriors win by 7
  • Baron plays under 46 minutes
  • Jax has double digit three point attempts
  • Aldridge has a big game with something close to 25-13
  • It rains more in Oakland than in Portland

wohoo, anyways.

I am worried about my dubs. We got Houston and UTah in our rearview mirror, and they can easily catch up. This Portland team is blazing hot too.

May God speed the WARRIORS! HOPE

Not Deja Vu
Last time, the W's were ecstatic about beating the Spurs and not taking the Blazers seriously (who were not red hot then.)

This time, the Ws know the Blazers are for real, the Ws have proven themselves on the road already, and the W's know that they need this game to gain some ground on the Blazers.

I just hope that they can keep Pryzbilla, Alridge Outlaw, and Webster under control.  We know Roy will get his 20, let's just stop the others.  Last time on the pick and roll Pryzbilla got 20.  This time after watching how the W's defended Parker and Duncan, I think the W's will have a better handle on defending the p and roll.

Nothing better than "The City".

I'd like them to just run Portland out in the first half and rest baron. I wish CJ Watson was ready, but oh wellz. Hopefully we'll get to see him for a little bit.

It will be interesting to see how well
Baron and Roy play against each other. This contest could be important in who gets the nod to the all-star game (im on the boat that Baron deserves it more)

J Rich vs. Boston
anybody with league pass watching this? J Rich is the hottest player in the league right now and he's lighting up Boston, the #1 defensive team in the league, in their home court. I've been watching him a lot lately and it's amazing - he's been doing this with a LOT of jump shots. He's just scorching hot!

they dont
have ray allen right now. but it does seem like the bobcats are pretty good against the celtics both  times.

by saintdee on Jan 9, 2008 6:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

J Rich would've scored more if they had Ray
Ray's a poor defender. They started the game with Tony Allen, a decent defender guarding him and Pierce guarding Wallace, but they switched Pierce onto J Rich pretty quickly when they realized that he's completely unconscious tonight

Hottest player in the league?
I wouldn't say it's an overstatement but it can be just I guess. Maybe it's just a little sour taste from him being a former Dub. Now he has potential to be a warrior killer. Especially with the vulnerability we have with our rebounding and handling boards.

by warriorgirl on Jan 9, 2008 6:49 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

trust me he is
counting tonight he's averaging 28.5 points over his last 10 games. That's better than... everybody. He's doing it on 52.5% shooting. He's averaged 3.4 3's per game over that stretch. And even most of his 2's are long jumpers... I don't think I've ever seen him  shoot better before in GS. Because he just doesn't have the offensive ability to consistently get him easy buckets like some of the premiere players in this league. But man, when his shot is on, the defense is pretty helpless since he jumps so high on his shot.

PLEASE DRIVE
With Travis Outlaw at 6'9 and at only a SMALL FORWARD, this is gonna be another game like Monday. I still can't get  the image of that Denver block he came with to secure a win. All I know is Beans is gonna have a harder time with the young Aldridge than Duncan.

Duncan had 31pts and 14 rbs!  Aldridge does that and the w's are toast.

Just so's ya's know's
The word over in Blazer land is that Jesus-reincarnated-himself, Brandon Roy, is playing tonight.

Not sure how healthy he is, but he says he feels lots better.  He's a tough kid and was playing just fine against Utah before he pulled himself out because of the pain; he felt too slow on defense and couldn't explode because of the bone bruise in his tushie.

Last report I read had Roy saying it still hurts but he can do what he do.

Just thought I'd share... here's to a good game.

Damn, I gotta listen to the stan-lee clone...
The blazers anouncers make the boston crew sound neutral.

I can just hear it now.  "That's a foul!", "The refs are beating us!"

If "fair and balanced" play-by-play was gasoline they'd be runnin' on E.

ARGH
First of all, props to CJ Watson, I love him already. Totally under control; with 1 practice he had solid D in the zone. Two deflections by my count, and closed out on the right man. He got beat once when he was a hair late, thats all I can fault him for defensively. On offense, he pushed the ball up court with the outlet and didn't force anything one v one (high praise with this bunch of idiots). When he had the chance he took it strong to the hoop to draw a foul. Again, credit to Mullin for finding another gem (it seems).

On Nelson:
The good news is you responded to our crappy start with total bench play, and finally had the stones to put in Wright and Croshere and the reserves. Pulling Jackson might have been the best move he's made all season, and I wish I were kidding. We even got good play from Pietrus, or else we were sucking so bad I couldn't see his usual antics.

The bad news is that our poor start is your damn fault. Jackson at PF? Why give up that much size on the perimeter with Ellis and Buike at 2/3 as well? Utter lunacy, and not the usual good kind.

PLAY HARRINGTON AND BIEDRINS TOGETHER. Use Wright and Cro as ur backup 4/5. Enough with the crappy Barnes/Pietrus at PF experiment- use them to get Bad Jack off the court when he's assaulting the rim.

It's no surprise the Blazers got all those transition buckets; you can't play defense at all when Jack is on the opposite baseline bitching about every call. That dude needs to shut up and get back in transition D.

Ellis was 2/3 but had an empty statline otherwise; Buike was 1-6 but had 4 boards, and a steal and assist. If only we could put them together.

Frustrating to see the bench claw and scratch back, only to see the starters come in and piss the comeback away.

Let's hope Watson gets at least another 5 minutes of burn in the 2nd, I want to see him shoot.

Hopefully
The Warriors are the most schizophrenic team I've ever watched (excluding the Sharks, but even they've even started putting it together at home). If they can initiate people other than Baron and Jax on offense in the first quarter in the next 8 games, then we'll finally see some semblance of consistency. I dislike wondering if we're getting a blowout loss or a close win when starting out with a 15-point deficit in the first quarter.

by jtoj on Jan 9, 2008 8:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

portland is good
because they play as a team. The warriors should take notes. They find the open man, as we can all attest to. They have an unselfish superstar in the making, and they have a talented bigman. Both of which the warriors don't currently have. They also have GREAT shooters. James Jones, Travis Outlaw, Steve Blake and even Channing Frye can hit an open jumpshot.

Wanna know why Portland is winning? The refs? no. They're just a good basketball team right now. Better i might add.

I know the Blazers are for real
but the Warriors have beaten themselves both times they've played them. The offense is pathetic in the first quarter, standing around and settling for threes, and not making Portland work for their baskets (weren't the first three Blazer baskets dunks?) doesn't allow the Warriors to weather their slow starts. I mean, hopefully the reserves are showing that if you take good shots, you won't have to rely on needing the 3s to go down.

I know it's just one game but for this game, Watson looked better running the Warriors than anyone else on the floor.

by belilaugh on Jan 9, 2008 8:54 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

The Warriors have surprised me
both games by coming out flat.  I think most Portland fans know that we're not seeing the real Warriors.  I'm just not sure why.  I assume this will turn around when we have to play you in Oakland.

I believe the Blazers' acceleration curve
is steeper than the Warriors' at this point.  But it's hard for me to believe that we don't have at least a couple more whuppins at your hands in store before we potentially hit the stratosphere.

--Dave

by BlazerDave on Jan 9, 2008 9:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

probably...
which is also infuriating to me, because it seems like the Warriors can only shoot a good percentage from 3 at home.

Has Steven Jackson hit a 3 this season during an opponents run? Why does he only hit them when the Warriors are going on runs or playing even? I remember he said in the beginning of the season he was going to try and cut down on the crappy plays now that he was a captain, but he hasn't. At all. I really don't like his mentality when Baron leaves the game, he thinks since he is a captain he has to take the shot every Warrior possession.

by belilaugh on Jan 9, 2008 9:18 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Please
On all the ref comments...I must admit I'm surprised.
  1.  Golden State has shot approximately 523,851 jumpers tonight.  How are the refs going to call fouls?
  2.  On average the Warriors are giving up 30 foul shots per night.  Portland had shot 16 at the third quarter break...WELL below that average.  This is hardly a new phenomenon for Golden State.  They can't be getting screwed every single night.
I'm not saying there weren't bad calls.  There are in every game.  But 20 points worth of bad calls?  Really?

I think it was just that offensive foul on Monta
that Jack drew. Even the Portland announcers knew it was a wack call.

I don't think anyone here could seriously say the refs were the reason why we lost or even a significant factor at all.

Baron is ALL STAR worthy.  But since he's the dubs lifeline, I'd rather have him take ALL STAR weekend off.  He did it this game and it actually counts.

Best duo since...

I'm a Blazer fan and even I...
Think Roy getting the nod of Baron is crap.

Roys a leader for a very young and surprising team who has been a juggernaut the last month and a half.

Baron is one of the top 5 guards in the league.

what are u smoking dude?
baron is a beast. ROY didn't even get good stats considering the way tonights game went.

The ALL STAR game = popularity contest
Not a measure of "beast"-itude .  The real beasts of the year make All-NBA teams.  I'll be damned if we lose baron on a ALL STAR game highlight dunk attempt.

I respect the heck out of Roy's game
and I think before it's all said and done he could lead his teams to more wins in his career than Baron ends up doing.  BUT...
  1.  He's too young to be considered really elite this year.
  2.  Outside of a WAY better shooting percentage and a slightly better assist-to-turnover ratio his stats don't match up with Baron's.
  3. The All-Star Game itself isn't going to be Brandon's best venue.  He needs the ball in his hands, which isn't going to happen for a young kid in that game.  He's more of a halfcourt player and that's a running game.  He stands out by how much better he makes his teammates and how much poise/leadership he has when the game is on the line, neither of which really apply in that venue.
All in all Baron would be a better choice for the All-Star game.  Brandon getting selected would be to the team's credit as much as much of his own.  But even then I'm more of a fan of rewarding the Warriors for what they did over 82 games + playoffs last year and the beginning of this season than the Blazers for what they've done over the last six weeks.

If you asked me who I'd rather have to win games and/or championships down the road I would likely put my money on Brandon.  I think he's a far better fit for the Blazers than Baron would be.  But an All-Star this year?  A nod to Baron would be appropriate.

Of course
that should have been "as much AS his own".

Tough loss
But at least Wright, Beli, and CJ got alot of burn, and produced pretty well, especially CJ. Also, I predict AT LEAST a 7 game winning streak, with our only 'test' coming at home against New Jersey. But even then, we should be able to pull that one out.

CJ
The guy looked real solid. I really liked his numbers coming in to the game, and dude looks promising. Finally, a solid backup. He's one of the only things that went right tonight for the Warriors. That, and the great energy provided by the bench. But damn, other than that, it was painful to watch.

radio
The guys on the radio were right, the Warriors were just tired. They had a long stretch and it just drained them

However, CJ Watson did play pretty well. And Rambo had a pretty good game too

Jax
Love Steven Jackson but he had a bad game and set a terrible tone to start the game. His frustrations resulted in sulking and not getting back on D. The rest of starters followed his lead.

The good news the starters got some rest and Nelli was able to see some good things from his reserves finally. CJ..very nice debut. Hope someway this loss is a blessing in disguise, and will lead to more PT for the reserves and much needed rest for the starters.

CJ
Is a keeper i like how he sees the floor and he seemed very poised when running the team,a sure upgrade over shoot first Hudson. I definately want to seem him get this kind of minutes and see more of his game,as well as Marco, not sure about Wright he still looks too green.Croshere is a great shooter that can't seem to hit and open 3,I hope we trade Prietrus for some draft picks that way he won't be able to take away minutes from Buke and Belly, and what happened to Barnes jump shot?

whats up with baron?
hes had two no shows in the past week. all stars dont have two terrible games within a week. cj watson had a decent game, hopefully he is finally the answer to the backup pg problem. Ithought it was pretty ridiculous that blazer fans thought monta hit blake intentionally.

um.
You play 48 minutes on bad knees and come back 2 days later and play great.

Watson has to be the warrior wonder tonight
Who would have thought that before the game. Anyone who knew that would happen a week ago like I did? haha

You guys talk an awful lot of sh**
about Jack.  Without him we were 0-6.  Case closed.  Take the good with the bad and shut up.
