Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

OPEN THREAD: Game 51 - Warriors vs Wizards

Warriors (W-L): 30-20

Wizards (W-L): 24-26

Time: 7:30pm PST

TV:FSN Bay Area

Radio: KNBR 680

Wow, this is a like Warriors reunion month. First, Jason Richardson makes his way back to Oakland, then the Warriors sign a former #1 draft pick who was banished a long time ago, then the Warriors played against their former #1 draft pick, and now two more popular former Warriors come to town, Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison. It's unfortunate we won't see Agent 0 tonight because he's always a joy to watch, but nevertheless, we'll still get a chance to watch Antawn's shotput shot and reminisce about his back to back 51's.

Jump!

Star-divide

Is this Jamison from years ago or Jamison (free agent) next year?

Is this Gilbert from years ago or Gilbert (free agent) next year?

This offseason, wouldn't it be crazy if the Mullin decided to go out and sign Jamison and Arenas, both potential free agents, to bring them back to the Bay?

Back to reality...

The Wizards are, to understate this, struggling. They have lost 7 in a row and 8 of their last 9. But it's okay, they haven't really changed their playoff position as the 6th seed in the East. No really, how do you go from 24-19 and to 24-26 and remain as the 6th seed? Here we are as Warrior fans worried that our team won't make the playoffs if we are 10 games above .500. Meanwhile, in the alternate basketball universe, the Eastern Conference, the current 6th-8th seeds are under .500. It just makes me believe that if the Heat got super hot and finished 24-9 they would have a shot at the playoffs. A team with 9 wins right now, still with a chance to make the playoffs.

But I digress. The Wizards just aren't playing well and it certainly doesn't help to have Caron Butler out the last 3 games and 6 of the last 8.

The Warriors on the other hand have been winning quite a few games, 7-3 in their last 10, 11-5 since January 7.

Recently, we've seen the emergence of one of our young stars. He's been going absolutely nuts and is literally carrying the scoring load on this team. He gets so many easy buckets in transition with his speed and can create his own shot. He's led the team in scoring the past 3 games and in 5 of the last 8 games. He's led the team in rebounding in 2 of the last 4 games. To say I'm impressed is a gross understatement. I'm amazed and astonished by his recent streak of hotness. Check out the quotes from the Kings game:

Nellie:
"That guy is incredible, he is an amazing player. They were blitzing the screen and roll and taking him (Monta) out of that so we really had to get him the ball by other means. He has the ability to smell out openings when they were zoning and he makes great cuts and then they fouled him. But it wasn't an easy night, we weren't able to gear our offense to set him up and he still comes up with 34 points. The turning point in the game for us was when we started to post up their smaller guards and drew double teams and that kind of got us rolling a little bit when it was quite a struggle. When Baron has a game like this we normally don't win it, so Monta had to have a big game and he did."
Andris Biedrins:
He was great. He really stepped it up, especially when B.D. (Baron) got his sixth foul and we needed somebody to step it up. Monta did a tremendous job on the offensive end and that's why we won, because of him.
Al Harrington:
Monta is the MVP. He's been playing incredible, shooting at an unbelievable percentage and when you're playing like that he doesn't want to miss any days, any practices, anything...he wants to keep that going definitely.

With BD not playing in his All-Star caliber form of late, someone had to step up to keep this team afloat, and Monta has done that. I'm not sure Monta can keep up this torrid shooting streak, but if he can continue to hit the boards (around 5 per game) and keep the assists up (around 4), we're seeing the emergence of a young star.

Tonight will be no different. He's going to tear it up, nobody on the Wizards can keep up with him on the break and nobody can stay in front of him. Let the hot hand roll tonight!

I can already here the 3's raining down from the arc - I just hope I hear the swishes.

Predictions

  • Warriors win by 5
  • What's wrong with Baron? Nothing tonight. He puts together his best performance of Feb.
  • Monta stays red hot and shoots "only" 80% from the field
  • Jamison scores 30

ill go in on that
hopefully they come out with some intensity. I watched the wiz play the suns last night, and they were able to keep up with them for the most part. Hopefully we dont take them too easy.

If we bring it defensively tonight
maybe we can reset that steals in a quarter record tonight with no daniels, arenas and butler. I guess stevenson is their primary ballhandler right now.

i predict a loss...
is jackson playing today?

i have a feeling monta will feel pressure to be the go to man and falter.

hopefully my pessimism is the polar opposite of what will happen.. but my prediction about the bulls beating us was right :(

No Predictions
You can't predict anything with this team.  We beat good teams and lose to crappy teams.  No rhyme or reason, they're just looking for their next dice game, see if they can hit a hot streak.

That line
Warriors by 10 seems high to me. Not that I think the Warriors will lose, but I don't think it will be a double digit victory.

I doubt Baron will have a bad game today, I think he'll make some adjustments, shoot less if they aren't falling and feed Monta. I would like to see Webber shoot his jumpshot a couple times early.

actually this is one of those games we win. we win 2 lose 1. So theoretically and based on our history this season this is one of those we win. We should lose the one against PHX

Well i may not know everything about the game of basketball but i do know that i love them WARRIORS and i think they'll win tonight but just like the someone said above maybe by single digits only but it'll be a good game!  Oh and is there any new news about the rumors of Mr. "Tru Warier" himself? portland
i agree that we should be rooting against the rockets. i don't believe portland will be able to put together a better second half then what they did in the first with that absurd win streak of theirs. i think we should be looking at denver and houston as the teams were competing against for playoff position.

Key to the 1st half
is Monta's terrible defense. It's his man who is scoring over and over again almost every time down the court. Just like on that last screen that he didn't go over. Monta has emerged as an offensive force of late, but I wish I had taken notes on how many of these Duhon-type possessions have come against his defense.

by saintdee on Feb 11, 2008 9:01 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe not as bad as we think
You know, we are playing a typical Warriors basketball game: shooting 50+% from the field and a surprisng 50+% from the 3 pt line...

We know we aren't a very good defensive team, so we need to stop pretending like our defense is surprising today; we're losing big because of one main reasons:
1. We keep FOULING and they keep making FTs. They have 11 more free points off FTs than we do, which is a pretty substantial number in a half

Also, They have made 9 out of 14 threes for a ridiculous 64% clip... I think the odds are they will cool off a little bit, if we go on a small run and we bring the lead down to say 8 going into the 4th, I really like our chances.

Granted we need to play smarter more fundamental defense, but they will fall back down to earth. Baron will pick it up, he almost always does.

by Blitz6k on Feb 11, 2008 9:01 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ways to kill Warrior momentum
  1. Call a timeout
  2. Draw a foul
  3. (half-joking) Run a pick and roll/pop.
I am demanding an unreal performance from Baron in the second half, he is a major reason we are in this hole and he would be a major reason we'd get out of it.

bothering my roommates with my stifles yells.  and the ppl below me prolly aren't too happy either haha

by singha on Feb 11, 2008 9:57 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ok so
i think we should shelve the webber experiment for now...i know eventually HE WILL help but the chemistry is just so messed up when hes in there. They are playing to his speed instead of him blending with the rest of the Ws.

by VonteegoCummings on Feb 11, 2008 9:57 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agreed
most of baron's fouls during the last 2 games have been during weber's playing time

by stedanko on Feb 11, 2008 9:58 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

but remember
nellie is stuck in his ways so we'll see the same thing next game, and we'll probably see another early double digit deficit

by AJC3317 on Feb 11, 2008 9:58 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah
It drives me crazy when Nellie says "we can't afford to lose these games" yet all the pro-Webbs say "he needs a few games to adjust."

for real
he's basically taking andris' minutes and b/c he messes up our flow baron and jax have been playing like 44 minutes a game.

their offense is 100x better posting baron or jax than it is running that princeton offense w/ zero shooters.

couldn't watch the game tonight
but who is R Mason and why do we keep making scrub guards look like stars?  Where is our perimeter D?

Was it Monta or Baron tonight getting torched?  Or both like the Chicago game?

by Zig on Feb 11, 2008 9:58 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He isn't a good defender but
he has been awful these last few games

by Fluid1 on Feb 11, 2008 10:00 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I mean you expect Haywood and Jamison
and any bigs are going to get theirs against the Warriors but lately the perimeter D has been shockingly poor

Monta isn't a good defender and maybe Baron is just tired

brb, going to ORACLE

lol
i like how we're so excited about beating a team without two of its allstars.. this game shouldnt have been that hard. somehow our supposedly "easy" games always turn out to be our hardest.

i guarantee you now the warriors thinks their hot stuff and will blow it against phoenix. we have our two wins. time for our 1 loss. its a infalliable system.

by saintdee on Feb 11, 2008 10:03 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

By the "playing down" theory
some here have we should come out strong against a good team like PHX

by Zig on Feb 11, 2008 10:04 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

but
we won 2 so no go on that suggestion. we will lose the next 1.

by saintdee on Feb 11, 2008 10:09 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Saintdee
I knew exactly what you were doing, you were clutch down the stretch with that pessimistic strategy.

Normally after falling behind by double digits I will be pissed no matter the outcome, but this is just beautiful right now.

by belilaugh on Feb 11, 2008 10:03 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yea
i was trying to will away the pain of losing if we lost. Its too painful to believe in a win then loss by 1 or 2 points like against minnesota. I don't think I can take any more of those.

by saintdee on Feb 11, 2008 10:05 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Geeze I hate the way we have to win
like this..... hopefully we can get on a role after the break and start blowing some teams out.... I also love the drama
