Different Uniform ... same goofy look

Like so many others, I'm still in shock with the Shaq to Suns trade that occurred last week. Few can argue that a trade of this caliber changes dynamic once again for the powers in the West, but it still leaves the question, "Will tonight be the night we see the debut of Shaq in a Sun's uniform?" Not bloody likely (Austin Power's impression). Shaq is out of the "pretend hurt" stage, now in the "oh shoot I have to get into shape" stage, and is expected to come back after the AllStar Break. So what does that mean for tonight? How will the Warriors fare against the best record in the Western Conference? Let's find out ... Jump!

Star-divide

Suns pre trade: I always said Marion was completely underrated even though he has a huge contract. The Suns were battling with the Hornets for 1st position all year before they traded him away and they are keeping up the pace even without him. However, watching them lately you can clearly see they are missing the boards and blocks that The Matrix gave them night in and night out; one of the many reasons for why they must be excited for Shaq to get into game shape.

Now that the Suns have the big "Aristotle" and are (arguably) considered stronger contenders, it will be interesting to see if this trade pans out. Too many people have their own opinions, so I’m waiting to see how the team gels when Diesel gets onto the court. If Shaq is out tonight, look for a high scoring, fast pace game that will tire us out by halftime. I’m excited.

The Warriors on the other hand also have a change in the lineup with the signing of Chris Webber. I’m holding any judgment till next month when Webber has had ample time to get into game shape and learn our system. So far it’s been luke warm but his passing ability has helped out right off the bat.

All in all, tonight is not about Shaq or Webber, trade talks or congressional hearings. Tonight will boil down to the play of 4 guards. The first two are the most prolific players in this league; Steve Nash vs. Baron Davis. One is a two time league MVP while the other has once again been snubbed for the all-star weekend even though putting up MVP like figures.

The second two? Raja Bell vs. Monta Ellis. These shooting guard will no doubt add a scoring punch for both teams to watch out for. My hope is that these dynamic match-ups will make this one of the most entertaining games this year. I’ve always waited for these games when the Suns come into town and play at the Roaracle on national TV. Throw in a young beast like Amare against our sly defensive tandem of Jackson and Biendrins, and you've got yourself some good ol' fashioned mayhem.

Our Warriors closed a close game the other night against the Wizards by coming back from a 23 point deficit, but tonight they better come out blazing to have a shot at controlling the best in the West. The Warriors have won the past two games against the Suns and ESPN reported it best when asking Grant Hill about their last encounter with the Warriors:

Grant Hill:
Suns forward Grant Hill described Golden State's 129-114 win on Nov. 26 as a "track meet."

With the Warriors recent poor performances in close victories, I’m hoping National TV, playing against the top team in the Conference, and our GSoM crowd, will motivate them enough to but on a show!

Predictions:

No more predictions from me but I have a prize for the individual who can predict the combined final score of the game. As a side question, the one who can predict the combined score of Davis and Ellis will win if an event of a tie. My prediction is: Final combined score of 253 with Davis and Ellis combining for 62.

... usually brings out the worst in the Warriors. Especially in the 1st half. Often our best players are -showing out- for the cameras and not running the offense, not passing the rock.

But since this game is against an elite team, maybe the Warriors will come out focused like the Hornets game.

My prediction
Combined: 210
Baron and Monta: 45

I feel that the Warriors are going to lose this one for several reason.
a) 2 wins 1 loss. Thats our season right there. We don't usually deviate from this. I mean we lost to Chicago for chrisssake. And after that huge comeback I am betting Jackson is feeling pretty cocky. We will miss our first 3-4 3 pointers. We will give up a huge lead from which we will never recover.
b) The Suns are due for a win
c) The Suns are probably motivated by Shaq
d) I am not sure if Baron is over his snub yet... this game can either be non motivated Baron or motivated Baron.
e) The All Star break is coming up I bet players wanna get this game over with.

Hopefully we are not seeing
the end of an era. You could always count on GSW Phoenix games to be immensely entertaining and fun. I really hope that Shaq won't slow them down too much. I don't think Webber will slow us down too much, but that is because he is only going to play 10 minutes a game. Shaq has the potential to be out there for a long time.

I'm going to watch this game and savor every moment, since it may not come again for a while.

  1. The SUns are not getting any calls right now, that ball that went off the ref was ridiculous.
  2. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Azubuike is the most underrated clutch performer the Warriors have. He is a straight up gamer. He shouldn't be making these shots with only like 2 minutes of play in the past month, but he does, which makes it more remarkable to me. Give him more minutes and I think he could be one of our top 4 clutch performers (behind obviously Baron, Stephen, and lately Monta). Barnes was clutch last year but has hit some kind of wall, he needs to find a way around it. Harrington is on and off, on some days he is our most clutch guy, on others our least. No time for the rest, game's back on!

more confident Baron will make a fadeaway from the baseline than a three. He usually doesn't take the baseline shot unless he knows it is going down, but he does jack up quite a few bricks from three land.

On a side note....
Barnes needs to start hitting his 3 pointers. Once he gets his threes going he will be a complete player.

Biedrins also needs to get much more PT especially over Pietrus. This game is in the bag if he plays more.

i think i'm the only one, but i kind of like pietrus's game. he had a key tip when it was 1 vs 4 suns down low that got us another possession late. although i also agree that buike and biedrins should play more.

just thank goodness that webber is on the bench in street clothes. maybe nellie's genius only brought in cwebb to motivate al to try harder lol.

PIETRUS PLAY
I'm tired of reading all this comments about Pietrus play. I think he plays with heart and intensity. Nelson keeps him in the game because of his defensive ferocity. Buke is great, but while buke gets lost in there at times pietrus always tries to produce at all times although he does turn it over quite a bit.

lost? he knows his role and hits his 3s. same can't be said for pietrus. Pietrus tries to steal and gets a few but he also fouls a lot. What Buke brings is rebounding. Buke is more willing to rebound and get taht second shot.

pietrus brings height and shotblocking, though. a lot like tayshaun prince, he makes teams think twice about driving the lane, while still being an SF who makes (OK, should make) his 3's. he gives an imitation of the interior help defense of biedrins with 3-point range.

I'm with you (and Nellie) I'll take Pietrus
Good call. TherePietrushim for the past couple of years. He's a fast and disruptive player. He has 6 fouls and his job is to use them. That is Nellie strategy. The Pietrus haters are igniorant and will magnify  any mistake he makes intpo the worst error in the world. They are also easily influenced by our local announcers who have had a bone to pick with Pietrus since he starting taking Dunleavy's minutes. Notice when national announcers report on Piet they call him a good player and like his game. Jeff Van Gundy gets it, people.

And thank god Nellie doesn't listen to Bob "I never played the game" Fitzgerald and Jim "I think Croshere should play 30 minutes a game" Barnett and the dodos on this board who go out of their way to blame everything on our 9th man in the rotation.

I'm saying he's great, but this is like a weird vendetta or something.
