RECAP: Warriors 105, Sonics 99 - Just Enough

Final Boxscore

Collison, do you really think you're going to block that?

It wasn't pretty (expected) but in the end it still counts as a W. Maybe I'm getting spoiled expecting the Warriors to handily take care of lesser teams. I mean, c'mon, 34 wins already? It used to take 2 years for the Warriors to get 34 wins. Don't get me wrong, I'm not "just happy to be here", I'd love for the Warriors to punish teams, but I also remember what it used to be like and am not feeling very nostalgic. Yea I understand that if they blow teams out, it allows us to rest the high usage guys like Baron and Monta. But then again, blowing teams out just wouldn't be "the Warrior way". Everything has to be edge of your seat entertainment. High flying dunks, gambles on defense, great thread-the-needle passes, lots and lots of chest bumping, and a flair for the dramatic. I know I'd save money on heartburn medicine if the Warriors decided to put teams away quickly, but I also might not be as entertained. From now on, I'm just going to expect the Warriors to struggle early on but turn it on in the 3rd and 4th quarters to keep things interesting.

I swear, I'm living in an alternate universe where the Warriors are actually good. Heck, they've only lost 2 or more in a row just once this season. Amazing. Hit that "Read More" button for more thoughts.

Star-divide

BWright was rewarded for his impressive play last Friday with a start tonight. How he goes from collecting more DNP-CD's (Did not play - coaches decision) than buckets to starting is beyond me. I didn't think he should start after one impressive game, but apparently he's done enough in practice that Nellie had enough confidence to use him. Braces only played 9 minutes tonight and wasn't able to replicate his performance against the Hawks, but perhaps this is the start of Nellie having some confidence in him. He did grab 3 boards and had a nice dunk, but struggled offensively early on.

So here's the reason I didn't think should start. He's not ready. He's more suited to come off the bench when some of the opposing team's first teamers are taking a rest. Build his confidence against the other team's bench like they did against Atlanta. He's a high energy guy who's going to play in limited minutes. Let him settle into that role now so that when Beans comes back, knows what's expected of him and doesn't have to shift back to starting the game on the bench. As a high energy guy, he can provide that spark off the bench with some rebounding or a blocked shot or a dunk. I'm all for giving him minutes now, but give him minutes that will be consistent with how he'll get them when the team is fully healthy.

I'm sure starting him is just an experiment that Nellie could take a gamble on against the Sonics. I doubt it continues against Philly on Friday, but you never know. What it does mean is that Webber's minutes will be severely affected. If BWright continues to get minutes when Beans comes back, you can say goodbye to the CWebb experiment. Webber was largely ineffective tonight and neither he nor Wright got any burn in the 2nd half.

Austin Croshere, where have you been all my life? Okay that's a little overboard, but damn that guy provided a great spark off the bench tonight in the 3rd. 14 points in 9 minutes? A perfect 6-6 from the field? 5 offensive rebounds? Dare I say it? Okay I will, Crosh was Scary Hot tonight. Well scary hot for Austin at least.

In fact, the bench played well tonight. Monta, Baron and Jax played a ton of minutes but the bench still picked up the slack especially Croshere, Barnes, and Pietrus. Barnes hustled on the boards and even though he shot poorly, he still provided some good energy off the bench. Pietrus even got into a little bit with his scoring and D. These guys did what bench players are supposed to do - let the starters rest a little bit and not surrender buckets.

Welcome back Captain Jack! Good to see him back from his ankle injury and able to play 37 minutes. His shooting woes continue, but he did go to the glass tonight and help out there with 7 rebounds. You could see the difference in the team tonight with him in there versus the Hawks game - there's just a different on court chemistry with his demeanor and ability to initiate the offense.

Aside from this dunk, Al Harrington shot 1-8. He's had two poor games in a row now. I'm a little worried but shouldn't be. Prior to the Atlanta game he had a big big big game against the Celtics, so I expect him to break out of his poor shooting slump sometime soon, like on Friday against Philly.

Oh and I don't want to forget Baron Davis. All he did tonight was score 20 (although the 8-24 shooting is ugly), hand out 10 assists, and steal the ball 7 times. One last thing, his plus/minus was +18 tonight and he played 44 minutes. That means in the 4 minutes he wasn't on the court, the Warriors were a -12. No wonder Nellie plays him these ungodly minutes.

Fun stat - the Sonics shot 50% from the field tonight. Clearly not enough "DE-FENSE" chants from the home crowd. One would think that if a team shoots 50% or better for an entire game that they would win pretty easily. Not so tonight. The Warriors were a bunch of thieves tonight, piling up 14 steals and forcing 24 Sonic turnovers. So while the Warriors defense wasn't stellar, they sure did a good job forcing the young Sonics team into a bunch of mistakes.

Monta Ellis
With a slight nod to Austin Croshere for lifting the team up in the decisive 3rd quarter, this Warrior Wonder goes to Monta. He's just blossoming into a star. When he started his hot streak, I didn't think it would last this long, but he's kept it up for over 6 weeks now. Just check out his game log and splits and look at February, he's having an amazing month. 26 points on 61% shooting! Throw in 4.6 rebounds, 4.8 assists, with 1.3 steals and you have a player who's in a hot streak that I hope never ends. His shooting percentages in February look like this - these are from the field, not the line: 70%, 91.7%, 80%, 50%, 66.7%, 53.9%, 42.9%, 50%, and 64%. Those are ridiculous numbers for a 2 guard who's taking a lot of pull up jumpers. Although his defense leaves something to be desired, the kid is playing big and Nellie can't take him off the floor. He's taking another giant leap in his development and it's been damn fun to watch.

I hear you.....
I haven't been to a game yet this year either.  Too expensive.  I upgraded to the HD this past summer, so it hasn't been too bad watching them in High definition.  I got some free tickets last year to see the Knicks and this year probably the only game I get to see is in Sacramento next month because my brother-in-laws firm has season tickets to the Kings.

great recap
don't forget to give props to the refs for calling offensive fouls for our flops. And letting Baron have that fouling steal at mid court.

I think the warriors got extremely lucky that the refs let us get away with a lot of blocking calls and that the rooks at Seattle are too inexperienced to argue with them.

check out this interview..
-Q: Any consideration to get Patrick O'Bryant out there with Biedrins out?

-NELSON: Sure, he's a member of the team. I know he's down there.

-Q: Where is Patrick at in his development?

-NELSON: I don't see enough in practice that I'm confident enough to play him in games. So that's where he is.

-Q: Could O'Bryant be on this team next year?

-NELSON: Yeah, I would say so. He's a free agent. So we'll be one of 30 bidders in the free agent market. He'll be on our board.

-Q: What isn't he doing?

-NELSON: What you're looking for in a player, especially a player who's coming off the bench, is a consistency in his game. Something he brings to the table that you can hang your hat on.

Is he a shot-blocker, is he a rebounder, is he a good defender, is he a scorer? What is it he brings to the party and what is his strength? And there isn't a strength there, as yet.

It's kind of all over the map. He passes a little bit, rebounds sometimes, sometimes he'll block a shot. But there's no consistency there. So I never know what he's going to do in a game or in a practice. That's what he's got to work on.

-Q: So you've seen some things in Brandan?

-NELSON: Absolutely, yeah. He's developed in the right way. And I think Belinelli has, too, although we've always known what his strength.

He's worked really hard on his defense and he's come along. I don't think developed quite as well as Brandan yet, but he's also grown pretty nicely this season in our practice sessions.

-Q: Is Kosta Perovic in the discussion?

-NELSON: I'm not sure that he's not. He does have some things that he does well enough. So I think I have a better idea what his game is. And he can hang his hat on a couple of things. There's more consistency there in what he does or doesn't do.

-Q: Is Perovic ahead of O'Bryant?

-NELSON: It's pretty close right now.

good double negative
"not so sure that he's not"

Nellie should run for governor of Hawaii when he's done coaching. He's got the doublespeak down already.

Wright looked overmatched last night, I agree. He'll get there though, love that length. Hanging on to him and Beans for next year gives the W's some good length in the frontcourt, especially on defense. Exciting.

My girlfriend hates that I'm into basketball again, and that I yell at the TV during games.

Bon Voyage O'Bryant
If Nelson is coaching this team, no way he re-signs with the Warriors. Its just a little funny that in limited action this year he seems to show some skill and would probably be able to contribute 10min. a night. Obviously in practice he must be doing something else. Just a little frustrating that we wasted another #1 pick on someone we are not planning on using.
Nelson needs to figure something out because playing small while Andris is out isn't going to work against everybody.

is a quadruple double...I was hoping BD was gonna grab some boards!! =X...anyone know the history on that (quadruple double)?  Has it ever happaned in an NBA game and how many times...

quadruple double
Here they are ...happened 4 times, i think the most impressive was the alvin robertson one as it was what you were looking for....with steals.

# Nate Thurmond, October 18, 1974, Chicago vs. Atlanta; 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists, 12 blocks.[1]

# Alvin Robertson, February 18, 1986, San Antonio vs. Phoenix; 20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 steals.[2]

# Hakeem Olajuwon, March 29, 1990, Houston vs. Milwaukee; 18 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists, 11 blocks.[3]

David Robinson, February 17, 1994, San Antonio vs. Detroit; 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 blocks.[4]

4 since it was recorded.
I suspect strongly had they kept stats for it, that Wilt would have had more than a few quad-doubles, but blocks and steals weren't recorded regularly in his day.  Hell, he might have had a quintuple-double or two.

hey
I hope last night's game doesn't hurt Brandan Wright's minutes. The bottom line is that he didn't look like he was ready out there at all, a little shell-shocked from starting it looks like. Hopefully Don Nelson gives him a second chance, letting him come off the bench. But hey, after his bad play Brandan stepped it up, he got a steal, 2 points a rebound and a block.

Wright v Croshere
I was at the Hawks game on Friday.  Talking about Wright and Croshere, these games were almost exact opposites.  Hawks:  Croshere got ABUSED in the 2nd quarter when the Hawks went up big.  He looked weak on D and was not confident in his shot.  When BWright came to the scorers table the crowd was definitely energized. His play in the 2nd was tentative.  In the 2nd half however, BWright really fueled the Warriors comeback (along with Buike).  All of a sudden Baron and Monta were looking for him (with mixed results).  I almost lost my mind when he dunked over Smith.  IMO they lost that game when he came out (that and the soul-sapping eternity between quarters, 3rd and 4th).  Croshere was a non-factor.  NOW with the sonics, BWright apparently looked tentative and Croshere explodes?  If I'm Nellie,  I'm scratching my head.  I do agree that Wright may be better used off the bench at this point where the perceived expectations are less (especially if he's replacing someone who is playing crappy).  I also wonder if there were some matchups that worked differently versus the hawks and sonics.  Anybody have a take on that?

by lucecooler on Feb 27, 2008 7:46 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think people...
...overreact to rookie play, Don Nelson in particular.

So he has a shaky start. The whole team has had shaky starts the whole year. How often does Jackson brick his first few shots? How often will Baron miss a layup inside? Because Wright is a rookie, people attribute a greater importance to every action, i.e. "he wasn't ready to play." Attaching such increased significance to such a small sample size is not a good means to evaluate a player. That can't happen till Nelson gives him more burn.

I'm scared about Friday
The 76ers have been playing really well ever since they started running. If I remember right they're the 2nd best rebounding team as well with Dalembert and Reggie "ball grabber" Evans beastin' it down low. I don't think Wright should start this game unless they start Thaddeus Young instead of Evans. Evans will push Wright around too much.
