OPEN THREAD: 76ers @ Warriors - Go watch "Semi-Pro!"

Warriors (W-L): 34-22

76ers (W-L): 26-32

Time: 7:30pm PST

TV: FSN Bay Area

Radio: KNBR 680

In my opinion, the Warriors vs. 76ers match-up tonight just doesn't stack-up against the debut of "Semi-Pro."  For those older cats who lived through the ABA, please feel free to let us know how close the film is based "on a true story."  Did the outrageousness of the previews full of outlandish stunts (wrestlings bears) and women in bikinis all the time really happen regularly in the ABA?

I probably have nostalgia without memory.  U.S. popular culture has made me long for something I have no recollection of besides what colorful throwback jerseys and imagery of Dr.J's distinctive Afro and dunks tell me.  But maybe there is something about that era of sports marketing of hilariously cute logos and completely random mid-game spectacles of wrestling bears or "sexiest haltertop contests" that is quite redeemable given the current era of mass consumer conformity of equally similar sterile packaging of NBA team products.  How come all teams got the same three stripes Adiddas warmups?  Why does every team have to have a Chinese woman on a uni-cycle throwing plastic cups on the top of her head at halftime?  When is that "entertainment?" Why do the Memphis Grizzlies, Indiana Pacers, and the Warriors have relatively similar looking warmups?  Where's the style?  Where's the creativity??  Where are the halter tops???

Anyway, I slightly digress...

Star-divide

For years now, the league has complained about declining ticket sales, which they blame on this lingering threat of an "image problem." Well, if players in suits hasn't changed anything, nor exciting upstarts like the Warriors, why not work on some new marketing schemes?  Take for example tonight: The Warriors vs. 76ers offers little appeal.  Besides the threat that the Warriors might get run out the building or keep in insanely close playing to the level of a far less talented team, ya'll should just tivo the game, hit up the movie theater, buy a huge tub of popcorn the price of your $9 student "discount" ticket, watch some "Semi-Pro" and a few other flicks that you can sneak into, then return home to watch the game at breakneck speeds.  Granted, we might get  to see more Brandan Wright.  We might actually see a blow out against an usually hot team (are we talking about the Warriors or the 76ers?) that is overachieving.   But seriously, we need more to watch on a Friday night after a long work or school week. I love the fact that the Warriors are are 12 games above .500, but this game like many recent Warrior games might leave you scratching your head thinking, "Damn, how is this team 12 games over .500?" Gimme something to be excited about! How about something outrageous! How about something hilarious! If new exciting players like Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Melo, and Monta aren't doing it for the league with their high flying play, shouldn't we stop blaming them and forcing them into into expensive suits that we've been wearing all week at work and DON'T want to wear when watching sports? C'mon NBA, bring on the wrestling bears, bring on the halter top competitions!

Predictions:

* Warriors by -2
* Monta lights up the 76ers for 26+ pts, but gives up just as much as he produces.
* 2 Croshere dunks followed by him howling.  Get this man some minutes!
* 76er's Carney, Young, and Williams go for 15+ pts.

What are your predictions?  Will the Warriors rebound (literally and figuratively -- in regards to two poor showings in a row)?  Will we see a wrestling bear?  Let us know!

Q
do bears like popcorn?

by gby822 on Feb 29, 2008 5:18 PM PST   0 recs

yo i got a question
this Utah at NO game should be good, but who losing would the warriors possibly benefit from?

i like new orleans squad but damn thier scary man paul peja west chandler aaa

id prefer a good game between the two but i cant help but like seeing utah struggle to the extent like they are to the minute

by sing sing supernote on Feb 29, 2008 5:37 PM PST   0 recs

Utah is scarier
because we've beaten New Orleans while they were playing their game.

We haven't been able to beat Utah yet. It seems like they always have our number.

by IQofaWarrior on Feb 29, 2008 6:03 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Not really...
Utah is a state of mind. We tied the season series with them last year not counting the playoffs. And game 3. It can be done.
"SCARY HOT!"

Utah
Not really in the mind but more in the match-ups.  Utah has more tough inside players that give our squad trouble.  We have no answer for Boozer, and Milsap gives us fits too.  Wright and Webber(yeah, right)is our extra ammo vs. Utah this year compared to last, but i agree that Utah concerns me more than CP3 and the Hornets.
I pray i never have to use a gun again.

I'm sorry
that was one of the weakest previews but who am i to complain if i had done it i would of said WARRIORS VS. SIXERS go dubs

by Getturiaf510 on Feb 29, 2008 6:11 PM PST   0 recs

hmm
I had no desire to go see that movie especially after seeing some pretty bad reviews, but you made a compelling argument.  I might just go out and catch Semi Pro tonight.

by Number22Drew on Feb 29, 2008 6:14 PM PST   0 recs

are you serious
will ferrell movies never get very good reviews but the critics like crap like there will be blood and atonement. anchorman, telledega nights, night at the roxbury, all fantastic, it just takes a certain type of person to apprecaite them. a good person

Are you serious!?!?!
This is the playoff run, and you just got your fan card revoked for that preview.  Dubz are all that matters. I hate bears!

Wow, I feel for Barnes
On the Warriors pregame show, they had a segment about Barnes, and he admits that he's still in shock about losing his mom, even though it's been 3 months, and it's still affecting his game. I like the fact that he admits it, and that he says he's still working on getting back into rhythm. I hope he does, because I like him and I'm cheering for him.

by IQofaWarrior on Feb 29, 2008 7:29 PM PST   0 recs

Semi-Pro
was a good movie for its comedica value. I saw it at 5:00PM (CST). I laughed when they didnt know how to do an "Ally-Oop". They do show some old school teams and arenas, like the St.Louis spirit, which was nice to see....especially the burst of vibrant colour, not the boring warm-ups we have today. But, as we tone down the unifroms in the 2000s, we can look ahead to the logos of the 2012 Olympics in London and the 2009 NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix and it looks like the world, and popular culture, is looking to turn towards better things. I think the apex reached was the 2008 All-Star Unis....Blue/Silver and Red/Gold? Huge, Gigantic, ugly lettering? I have confidence that people will get fed up.

Also, Warrior Girl, what else do you want to hear? The "intrigue" of Webber going against his old team? Please. Sometimes it's nice to have a spin on things.

Is Joey Crawford the most overrated
official in the league. Nice offensive foul call on a clear blocking foul by Monta.

by bloodsweatndonuts on Feb 29, 2008 7:47 PM PST   0 recs

How
can four on two result in a blocking foul you must be stupid not to pass the ball when you have 4-2.So he deserved it.

by buky on Feb 29, 2008 8:11 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Umm, I don't understand the logic.
So if you have a 2-man-advantage and you decide to take it to the rim you should automatically be called for an offensive foul if there's contact? The rules don't apply on 4 on 2s?

Monta was moving on the play which is supposed to be a block. Since I posted the above, it happened again.

I am LOVING
this more traditional lineup right now. With Wright pretty much filling the role of Biedrins, this can get done. I will admit, I was skeptical of Monta Ellis's ability to score consistently or dish out assists, but the dude has quite simply proved me wrong. I was also pretty skeptical about Wright and his ability to score and rebound, but with a bit of experience, the dude can add Hustle and Flow.

Very good opening
however in my opinion the Sixers are opening like the Warriors are known to. So if they follow the script then the Warriors better not let up or the Sixers will be right back in it.

Seriously, I laugh at anyone who said the reason Wright was on the bench was because he wasn't good enough. I thought I'd never say it, but it's a good thing that Biedrins got injured.

I know people won't agree, but I think Webber is the victim of the self fulfilling prophecy. I really didn't think he looked that bad in some of the games he played in, but everyone kept talking about how he was playing bad and now he is playing bad. No denying he is playing bad however.

I swear
the Warriors are only up by 10? The 76ers have been playing atrociously. Andre Miller and Samuel Dalembert seem to be the only guys even trying, and Andre Miller is making a lot of fundamental mistakes. On the other hand, all 6 of the Warriors that have played have basically put in their due, playing fantastically. If this trend continues, it looks like it's gonna be another one of "those" endings when the Warriors start losing.

Hey!
Yeah, my school has kept me very busy....I even missed the SuperSonics game! Ugh, too much work.

In any case, of course I got to see him! He was the one consistent guy (aside from Chris Paul) who played for the Hornets in 2005-2006. It was my first year of seeing NBA, and it was awesome. I also like P.J. Browns Old School haircut that he's kept since his rookie season for the NEts in 1992-1993.
