OPEN THREAD: Game #49- Warriors vs Bulls- Turn Back the Clock!

To: Chuck
From: GSoM

Hey Charles really liked it the first time around!

Warriors (W-L): 29-19
Bulls (W-L): 19-29
TV: TNT
Radio: KNBR 680
Time: 7:30pm

Before you make the jump don't forget to sneak in your last minute entries for the CWebb Contest for a chance to win the GSoM Crew's pair of lower bowl tickets to watch the Golden State Warriors vs Washington Warriors next Monday night at the Roaracle.

Star-divide

Boy did I luck into this game when the GSoM Crew were dividing up the games to cover. I'm sure you remember the thriller at the Roaracle last time TNT was in town: Recap: Warriors 121, Nets 119 - An Emotional Rollercoaster. Tonight's game most likely won't be anywhere as close of a game as that one, but it's going to be even more entertaining. Here's what I wrote about this one in this week's Counting W's piece over on The W Column for FSN Bay Area:

The Golden State Warriors, Don Nelson, Chris Webber, and Charles Barkley all on national television. I don't think it gets any better than this! The last time this happened it was the 1994 NBA Playoffs 1st Round matchup between the Warriors and Suns. I can guarantee you that Barkley will not be going off for 56 points this time around.

As far as the game this isn't going to about the sub-.400 Bulls vs the .600 Warriors. It's going to be about the Dubs coming out in full force and putting the whole hoops nation on blast for the recent Baron Davis All-Star snub. This team understandable feels pretty disrespected after getting no representation in the entire 2008 All-Star Weekend, but that's just more fuel for their fire. Nellie's crew thrives in the role of the underdog and this week's TNT NBA Thursday is just the beginning. This team wants the whole world to know that they're a force to be reckoned with. It's a big statement game, particularly for Davis, Stephen Jackson, and Chris Webber who wants to show everyone he still has plenty left in the tank. If I were the Bulls there's a million other places I'd rather be than Oakland this Thursday night.

Here's another historical twist to this game. The Warriors will be starting their #1 overall pick (via trade) from the 1993 NBA Draft in Chris Webber. On the opposite frontcourt the Bulls will be starting the Warriors #1 overall pick from the 1995 NBA Draft in Joe Smith. Seriously, this game is just one big fairy tale. You couldn't ask for a better set of storylines.

Doc Nellie and Chris McFly ain't no bull!

[Take your pick: GSoM wallpaper]

Welcome Back Webber!

Um, sky WASN'T the limit.

Just an Ordinary Joe:

Definitely check out:

Predictions

  • Warriors by 5.
  • Baron Davis messes around and gets a triple double.
  • Chris Webber drops 14-8-4 with a swat and a pick mixed in. (Final call for the CWebb Contest)
  • CWebb and Nellie give each other a hug. (It'll bring a tear to my eye!)
  • After seeing how much fun CWebb has with the Dubs tonight, former #1 overall pick Joe Smith demands the Bulls to trade him to the Warriors before the February 21st trading deadline.
  • The TNT crew replays the CWebb dunk on Barkley a few times with Ernie and Kenny cracking up.
  • [Insert your own predictions about boring Bulls team here]

Retro Night??
Was Joe Smith one of the traded draft picks that we got from the C-Webb - Tommy G. trade?

I had been looking for this at home, but. . .
Here's a nice article from SLAM from not too long ago. They reposted it recently.

Deng definitely out and Gordon and Hinrich probably out, this should be an easy one. i hope they put it away early

webber
hopefully we'll see a sick pass from Webber to Wright for another sick dunk. Watson was sorta a ball hog the last game with Charlotte, he needs to dish the rock more... especially to Belinelli.. he needs more touches.

C-web Or J- Smith?
Who do you think is better right now, Chris webber or Joe smith? I think C-webb has the edge on passing and the jump shot, everything else is just even. Does anyone think Joe smith would have been a better addition than Webber? probably better than O'bryant or Kosta

by BigVic52 on Feb 7, 2008 5:50 PM PST   0 recs

Who's better right now? today?
Joe Smith by a decent margin.  Dude's got ~40 games of regular burn already. Plus he's 2 years younger and a regular rotation nba rotation player.  The extra burn leads to a more consistent jumpshot.

Who's the better addition to the warriors?  I say C-Webb just because of his passing ability in the half court.

by jiggah70 on Feb 7, 2008 5:59 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I dunno...
I think Joe has a better jumper. C Webb didn't really shoot that well last year. C Webb's biggest strength right now is his high basketball IQ, which can't go away with age...

Joe Smith's having a great year, so I'll have to
go with Joe.  But not on the Warriors.  CWebb fits in better with Nellie-ball.  Pinch me.  I still can't believe CWebb and Nellie are back together though.

However, I heard that Joakim Noah will get the start tonight vs. CWebb.  It should be a good test for Webber's strength and stamina.

by callahan on Feb 7, 2008 6:51 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Is the dude in your avatar
you in real life? Just wondering.

As for your question, Joe Smith. He's a great offensive player, even today, and a great 6th-7th man for some big man scoring/rebounding off of the bench. A shame he's stuck on struggling Chicago. Meanwhile, Webber didn't exactly put up fantastic numbers playing for Detroit so....for right now, he's below, but he could prove us wrong in the coming weeks. Great question, though.

Noah
What are people's thoughts on Noah? If the warriors drafted Noah, I think he would have give the warriors immediate help, and lots of minutes, he can pass, board, and run the floor. And the warriors wouldn't have needed Webber.

If the warriors drafted Noah
he would warm the bench
and we would never had a chance to be introduced with king-kong style of basketball

Baron and Warriors are going to rock
I really hope that Baron rocks the house tonight. As biased as I am, I honestly think he deserved the all star bid but who here doesn't think that? Anyway, if the snub actually gets the warriors deeper this year then perhaps it was all worth it.

i like this excerpt from marin ind. journal:
~Without a doubt, it will be a Kodak moment when he (webber)steps onto the Oakland court in a Warriors uniform for the first time since May 4, 1994. Stephen Jackson can attest how long ago that was.

"I was in high school," he said. "I was chasing girls and skipping class, looking for the dice game."~

by GSwarrior on Feb 7, 2008 7:38 PM PST   0 recs

who cares
Charles is an idiot.  Regardless of how well the warriors are playing he will never give them respect.  Just like the rest of the NBA, Charles helps the Warriors by disrespecting them.

by nautica on Feb 7, 2008 8:00 PM PST   0 recs

SLOW START
its ok warriors are just going through a slow start..they will pick it up later in the game just like their other games..

by jojo4o8 on Feb 7, 2008 8:02 PM PST   0 recs

Warriors
Its ok, they may start sluggish, but the beat down bulls will tire down to the frenetic pace the warriors love to run, plus the 3 bombs will start to rain once someone injects some energy, the thing about the warriors is the energy is contagious, unfortunately it goes both ways.

by BigVic52 on Feb 7, 2008 8:13 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Rest
Barnes can give Jackson rest now that he doesnt have to play PF

by MrHerms on Feb 7, 2008 8:04 PM PST   0 recs

Okay, they can make fun of Al all they want
But the fact remains he is shooting 40% from three and Korver is shooting less than 37% from three this year.

So even if they think think Korver is a better shooter to call that an insult to Korver is just wrong.

Meanwhile the Warriors continue to struggle early against bad teams. I thought they had turned the corner in the NO game, but it looks like the five day rest came at a bad time.

Big Al
I read the contra costa times article on Al harrington, and he says he's not happy with shooting 3's all the time, and he wants to show the world that he's a versatile well rounded player. My opinion on this is that he's the perfect machine gunner for the W's coming off the bench, he usually has a slower bigger guy manned on him which leaves him most of the time open on the perimeter, plus he's hitting 40 plus percent from three point land. I know he's a team player and a true warrior, but does anyone out there think this unhappiness start to affect his play, or diminish his role? or even make him more of expendable trading chip for some crazy trade down the road? I like him a lot, and since he came to the warriors last year, he's gotten into a run and gun shape, lighter, leaner, and faster, and if anyone watches him play during the game, he is working his tail off trying to guard the bigger dude he is assigned to. Anyone with thoughts on this?
