OPEN THREAD: Game #49- Warriors vs Bulls- Turn Back the Clock!

To: Chuck
From: GSoM

Hey Charles really liked it the first time around!

Warriors (W-L): 29-19
Bulls (W-L): 19-29
TV: TNT
Radio: KNBR 680
Time: 7:30pm

Before you make the jump don't forget to sneak in your last minute entries for the CWebb Contest for a chance to win the GSoM Crew's pair of lower bowl tickets to watch the Golden State Warriors vs Washington Warriors next Monday night at the Roaracle.

Star-divide

Boy did I luck into this game when the GSoM Crew were dividing up the games to cover. I'm sure you remember the thriller at the Roaracle last time TNT was in town: Recap: Warriors 121, Nets 119 - An Emotional Rollercoaster. Tonight's game most likely won't be anywhere as close of a game as that one, but it's going to be even more entertaining. Here's what I wrote about this one in this week's Counting W's piece over on The W Column for FSN Bay Area:

The Golden State Warriors, Don Nelson, Chris Webber, and Charles Barkley all on national television. I don't think it gets any better than this! The last time this happened it was the 1994 NBA Playoffs 1st Round matchup between the Warriors and Suns. I can guarantee you that Barkley will not be going off for 56 points this time around.

As far as the game this isn't going to about the sub-.400 Bulls vs the .600 Warriors. It's going to be about the Dubs coming out in full force and putting the whole hoops nation on blast for the recent Baron Davis All-Star snub. This team understandable feels pretty disrespected after getting no representation in the entire 2008 All-Star Weekend, but that's just more fuel for their fire. Nellie's crew thrives in the role of the underdog and this week's TNT NBA Thursday is just the beginning. This team wants the whole world to know that they're a force to be reckoned with. It's a big statement game, particularly for Davis, Stephen Jackson, and Chris Webber who wants to show everyone he still has plenty left in the tank. If I were the Bulls there's a million other places I'd rather be than Oakland this Thursday night.

Here's another historical twist to this game. The Warriors will be starting their #1 overall pick (via trade) from the 1993 NBA Draft in Chris Webber. On the opposite frontcourt the Bulls will be starting the Warriors #1 overall pick from the 1995 NBA Draft in Joe Smith. Seriously, this game is just one big fairy tale. You couldn't ask for a better set of storylines.

Doc Nellie and Chris McFly ain't no bull!

[Take your pick: GSoM wallpaper]

Welcome Back Webber!

Um, sky WASN'T the limit.

Just an Ordinary Joe:

Definitely check out:

Predictions

  • Warriors by 5.
  • Baron Davis messes around and gets a triple double.
  • Chris Webber drops 14-8-4 with a swat and a pick mixed in. (Final call for the CWebb Contest)
  • CWebb and Nellie give each other a hug. (It'll bring a tear to my eye!)
  • After seeing how much fun CWebb has with the Dubs tonight, former #1 overall pick Joe Smith demands the Bulls to trade him to the Warriors before the February 21st trading deadline.
  • The TNT crew replays the CWebb dunk on Barkley a few times with Ernie and Kenny cracking up.
  • [Insert your own predictions about boring Bulls team here]

Retro Night??
Was Joe Smith one of the traded draft picks that we got from the C-Webb - Tommy G. trade?

I had been looking for this at home, but. . .
Here's a nice article from SLAM from not too long ago. They reposted it recently.

webber
hopefully we'll see a sick pass from Webber to Wright for another sick dunk. Watson was sorta a ball hog the last game with Charlotte, he needs to dish the rock more... especially to Belinelli.. he needs more touches.

C-web Or J- Smith?
Who do you think is better right now, Chris webber or Joe smith? I think C-webb has the edge on passing and the jump shot, everything else is just even. Does anyone think Joe smith would have been a better addition than Webber? probably better than O'bryant or Kosta

by BigVic52 on Feb 7, 2008 5:50 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Who's better right now? today?
Joe Smith by a decent margin.  Dude's got ~40 games of regular burn already. Plus he's 2 years younger and a regular rotation nba rotation player.  The extra burn leads to a more consistent jumpshot.

Who's the better addition to the warriors?  I say C-Webb just because of his passing ability in the half court.

by jiggah70 on Feb 7, 2008 5:59 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno...
I think Joe has a better jumper. C Webb didn't really shoot that well last year. C Webb's biggest strength right now is his high basketball IQ, which can't go away with age...

Joe Smith's having a great year, so I'll have to
go with Joe.  But not on the Warriors.  CWebb fits in better with Nellie-ball.  Pinch me.  I still can't believe CWebb and Nellie are back together though.

However, I heard that Joakim Noah will get the start tonight vs. CWebb.  It should be a good test for Webber's strength and stamina.

Is the dude in your avatar
you in real life? Just wondering.

As for your question, Joe Smith. He's a great offensive player, even today, and a great 6th-7th man for some big man scoring/rebounding off of the bench. A shame he's stuck on struggling Chicago. Meanwhile, Webber didn't exactly put up fantastic numbers playing for Detroit so....for right now, he's below, but he could prove us wrong in the coming weeks. Great question, though.

Noah
What are people's thoughts on Noah? If the warriors drafted Noah, I think he would have give the warriors immediate help, and lots of minutes, he can pass, board, and run the floor. And the warriors wouldn't have needed Webber.

Baron and Warriors are going to rock
I really hope that Baron rocks the house tonight. As biased as I am, I honestly think he deserved the all star bid but who here doesn't think that? Anyway, if the snub actually gets the warriors deeper this year then perhaps it was all worth it.

i like this excerpt from marin ind. journal:
~Without a doubt, it will be a Kodak moment when he (webber)steps onto the Oakland court in a Warriors uniform for the first time since May 4, 1994. Stephen Jackson can attest how long ago that was.

"I was in high school," he said. "I was chasing girls and skipping class, looking for the dice game."~

its ok warriors are just going through a slow start..they will pick it up later in the game just like their other games..

by jojo4o8 on Feb 7, 2008 8:02 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Warriors
Its ok, they may start sluggish, but the beat down bulls will tire down to the frenetic pace the warriors love to run, plus the 3 bombs will start to rain once someone injects some energy, the thing about the warriors is the energy is contagious, unfortunately it goes both ways.

Rest
Barnes can give Jackson rest now that he doesnt have to play PF

by MrHerms on Feb 7, 2008 8:04 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Okay, they can make fun of Al all they want
But the fact remains he is shooting 40% from three and Korver is shooting less than 37% from three this year.

So even if they think think Korver is a better shooter to call that an insult to Korver is just wrong.

Meanwhile the Warriors continue to struggle early against bad teams. I thought they had turned the corner in the NO game, but it looks like the five day rest came at a bad time.

Big Al
I read the contra costa times article on Al harrington, and he says he's not happy with shooting 3's all the time, and he wants to show the world that he's a versatile well rounded player. My opinion on this is that he's the perfect machine gunner for the W's coming off the bench, he usually has a slower bigger guy manned on him which leaves him most of the time open on the perimeter, plus he's hitting 40 plus percent from three point land. I know he's a team player and a true warrior, but does anyone out there think this unhappiness start to affect his play, or diminish his role? or even make him more of expendable trading chip for some crazy trade down the road? I like him a lot, and since he came to the warriors last year, he's gotten into a run and gun shape, lighter, leaner, and faster, and if anyone watches him play during the game, he is working his tail off trying to guard the bigger dude he is assigned to. Anyone with thoughts on this?

the Warriors sometimes wonder why they don't get on National TV more often. Laying an egg in the 1st quarter so often doesn't help viewers stay tuned. Only Warrior fans have the repeated experience of seeing them come back in the 4th quarter.

Look for things to turn around
We shot 39% and the Bulls shot 53%.  And we're only down by 3.  As long as the Bulls return to their old selves and/or we stop shooting so badly the Ws should be in a good position to win this game.

They are shooting .560
not to mention they are getting extremely high percentage shots in crunch time because they can get whatever they want.

Not all of these turnovers we've been causing have been because of defense either.

guess webber doesn't have it yet for crunch time. have to wait a handful of games to see his true worth. hope it works out though..
like in the 1st half while going for a loose ball, he probably had a shot at it had he dove or dropped to the floor, but casually reached for it and got out hustled by quicker, albeit younger player.

Barne's worst game
This was Barnes' worst game. His man scored on him like crazy in the 4th quarter stretch. For the most part Baron and Jax did their part at crunch time. Baron also had a ton of steals.

It was the interior defense of Barnes that cost them the game.

Lost It In the First Quarter
The MO is out on the Dubs. Hit them hard early in 1st quarter with energy. Get a big lead. Then manage the game to the end.

Too often the Ws don't come to play at the start of the game.

you can't win a game in the first quarter, but the Warriors prove this theory wrong.

Barkley will use this to explain
why the Warriors won't make the playoffs. Of course, even if we won he would have used it to explain why the Warriors won't make the playoffs. Not that I give a fcuk what he thinks. So frustrated right now.

Biedrins hasn't been finishing, Barnes hasn't been producing, Baron and Jackson didn't produce. Ellis produced the entire game yet we didn't give him nearly enough shots. Baron should not have 24 shots if Ellis is 11-12.

Bulls were without their 3 best players Gordon, Deng, and Hinrich.  They were also on the roach on backend of a back to back.  Warriors had 5 days rest.  No excuses.

I'm sick of watching the team come out with no energy in the beginning of quarters.  Baron and Jax played like sh*t tonight.  Only Monta (11-12, 25pts and Biedrins (12pts,18rebs) bothered to show up.

Bad coaching??
After watching tonight's game, I have to really question some of Nellie's decisions. I know he is usually good with match ups, but tonight it really killed us. Duhon had a good game, can't do anything bout that, and Tryus Thomas took over in the 4th. But what I don't get is why Nellie doesn't seem to tell his players to give the ball to the  "HOT HAND." Here are 3 questions I would ask him
Ellis was playing and shooting the ball well, but why doesn't he get him the ball more?
Barnes and Pietrus together does not make a good mix, because they are too much of a liability on both ends of the court. Am I the only one seeing it?
Starters are playing rusty, why not play your bench? i.e. Buke, who is a consistent shooter
Just shows that we need more of an inside presence, and another defensive stopper

by celicadriven27 on Feb 7, 2008 10:42 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Not something to be proud of
It's funny how we rely on the 3-pointer as one of the main weapons, but we can't hit them against a zone defense and refuse to cut inside to break it down. All I saw in the first and second quarters were: 3, long jumper, long jumper, 3. I don't understand why we don't play an inside-out game, like Barnett advocates. We're one of the top teams in points in the paint and there's no reason not to use that to our advantage, force teams to collapse inside, and then start taking wide open 3s.
We're all B.D.'s sidekicks. He's got like five sidekicks. We're like the Power Rangers. - Al

Those refs...
That was QUITE the discreprency at the FT line. 48 for the bulls to our 21. Sure a few were intentional but come on. That has to be one of the worst officiated games all season. I really don't like like blaming refs but you couldn't breathe on that entire team tonight while our guys were getting bruised up for nothing, really disapointing. And even though we didn't shoot that was OUR game. I'm just disgusted.

Matt Barnes
I've been holding it in all season but I see why this guy was on so many teams. He is a flat out bone head. He's good for at least 2 retarded and has no real shot, just alot of slop and he's not even very good at that. He had a lucky season last year. Why isn't Azubuike playing latley? He is much more solid, actually hits shot, and isn't careless with the basketball, unlike Mr. Barnes. I think making barnes a Tri-captain worked the opposite effect it did on Jackson and either went to his head or he is trying to live up to be a leader(which he is NOT) and tries to hard. Maybe if he WAS demoted we would get a little last year Barnes. Sorry I'm just ranting a bit, but he's been really disapointing this year to say the least.

by Athan on Feb 7, 2008 10:54 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

typo
I meant 2 retarded turnovers, can you edit posts here?

by Athan on Feb 7, 2008 10:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree..
But its no excuse...Dubs did it to themselves. They argue over every single call, those technical fouls were pointless and got them no where. They got on the bad side of the refs, not a recipe for success. Although, I think they got away with some reach-ins themselves. What bugged me was I think the baron's two shots blocked at the end was goal-tending, watching the replays, the ball was on its way down before tryus thomas blocked em.

by celicadriven27 on Feb 7, 2008 10:54 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

goal tending
Yeah I was screaming at the T.V. when I saw those blocks, I'm not 100% sure but they REALLY did look like goal tending. All I know is I don't want to see those refs again.

GET RIDE OF BARNES N PIETRUS
Barnes and Pietrus are holding this team back..I would rather risk playing Wright, Buke, Belinelli. They could be a  better option right now. I don't see how Barnes is a Captain, he is flat out GARBAGE!!..he'll have one good game out of 10.

tell me you are not this ignorant. this game falls on baron (and to a lesser extent sjax). he was ball hogging it chucking up 3's from like 27 ft out and blowing a couple of uncontested lay ups (that fast break one was particularly frustrating) when he should of been looking for al and deferring to monta.

by the evil monkey on Feb 7, 2008 11:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Pietrus..don't get me started..
I have been holding it in all season, saying I won't say anything. But he commits too many touch fouls, can't shoot consistently, and plays mediocre defense. Couldn't stop any of the bulls 2nd tier players. Air France, his new nickname should be "Pepe Le Pew," b/c he STINKS

I am not saying...
BD and JAX are to blame as well, its a team game. You win with your team and you lose by it. I was just pointing out that Barnes and Pietrus are huge liabilities when we play a small lineup. They can't creat their own shots, and they can't play defense, can you not agree?
