RECAP: Warriors 115, Suns 123 - Gut Check

Final Boxscore

Exactly.

In what was supposed to be a matchup to see the new look Suns matchup with a team that ran up and down even more than they did, I was a little disappointed. Shaq was stuck in foul trouble for most of the game totaling just 14 minutes through 3 quarters and sitting the entire 4th. But even without The Diesel, this was an entertaining ballgame with a playoff-like atmosphere. As a basketball fan, it's tough to ask for much more. Well maybe a little more defense, but hey, I love me some scoring.

More after the jump.

Sucks even more to be Austin

Shaq the Hack
Were the Warriors too quick for Shaq tonight and that's why he picked up all those fouls? Maybe but I know this, all those fouls probably helped the Suns win the game. Not having him out there let them play like they're used to playing - fast. The floor was wide open. They threw outlets up the floor for easy buckets, launched from 3 with no conscience, and let Steve Nash operate in the lane with nobody clogging it up. If the Suns can prove they can handle uptempo teams, half-court teams, and everything in between, the trade may have worked out. I'm still not a believer, but they have just knocked off the Spurs and Warriors.

Baron!
Baron was, in a word, spectacular. He brought his A+ game on offense and left it all on the floor. He poured in 38 points shooting a hot 15-30 and 6-11 from long distance. He added 9 boards and 8 assists along with 3 steals. I say A+ on offense because his defense left something to be desired. But he wasn't the only one on defense who didn't play all out. I'm not going to get on his defense though because he played his butt off tonight and this game is a blowout without Baron scoring like crazy.

No Help for Baron
Where were the key guys other than Baron? The two guys who I thought might be able to exploit Shaq, Al and Beans, were nowhere to be found. Can you say, milk carton? Al hit on just 4-11 shots and never found a groove from the outside. Biedrins got into foul trouble and was never really a factor.

It's no fun for me to write this because he's been playing so amazing of late, but Monta's poor shooting night came at the exact wrong time. He shot 8-22 (36%), way down from his normal 85% from the field. I appreciate the 8 boards and 4 assists but he seemed to disappear in the 2nd half. He had trouble hitting his mid-range jumper tonight perhaps struggling to shoot over the longer arms of the Suns. I'll chalk this one up to just an off-shooting night, but we sure could have used a typical efficient night from Monta.

Now seriously, where was Stephen Jackson? 4-13 from the field? How can he be so cold in the Valley of the Sun?

The lights were shining bright, the entire nation watching, and of all the usual suspects only Baron came to play.

Two Nice Surprises
Mickael Pietrus and Kelenna Azubuike. MP2 started and gave a nice effort tonight with 16 points and 8 rebounds. He's even playing better defensively and the mental errors only happen 10 times a game, not 25. That's all I'm going to write because I don't want to jinx it. Kelenna played well tonight off the bench - actually the only guy who played well of the bench. 10 points, 7 boards is solid play in just 20 minutes.

Back to Back? Whateva
Blame the loss on the back to back? Naw. If your leader, the guy who plays the most minutes on the squad, Baron Davis, can come out and play a great game, you would expect some of the other guys to step up. Except for Pietrus and Kelenna off the bench, where was the help? This was a big game for the Warriors not only because they were on national tv but because a win puts them 3 games in front of Denver and only 0.5 behind Phoenix. The Warriors have shown they can win the 2nd of a back to back so I don't think the back to back is an excuse.

One Big Run
The Suns were up by a few points in the 3rd quarter and the game seemed to be going back and forth. Then BAM, the Suns roll off a 10-0 run towards the end of the quarter to propel them to a 14 point lead. That was the big turning point in the game because the Warriors had to keep scratching and clawing their way back in the game. They had to fight hard just to get the game under double digits. They'd make a run but the Suns always seemed to answer with one of their own. After the Suns opened up this lead, the Warriors hung around, but never really got back in it.

D-d-dunk

Too Much Amare
Man this guy is nasty. Dwight Howard or Amare? I don't know who I'd take but I for damn sure wouldn't mind making that decision if I was a GM. Amare, as expected, tore it up. His 36 points offset Baron's scoring. Even more impressive is the 62% he shot from the field. I guess when half your shots are dunks, you'll shoot well. He also had 11 boards, but his best stat of the night were the 4 blocks. And he really saved some buckets with those blocks. He got a couple blocks on layups by the Warriors. That 10-0 run in the 3rd was prolonged because he got a block and then outletted it down the court for a bucket. His defense was very good tonight, something that usually doesn't happen. If he can keep up a consistent effort on defense, he's going to be even scarier.

How about a little defense?
Check this out, the Suns shot 50% from the field and 12-24 (50%) from 3! Those are numbers I want to see from the Warriors. When you shoot that well, there's no reason for you to lose the game. But Warrior fans, take solace in the fact that the Suns shot the lights out, the Warriors didn't shoot well, and the game was still close. Heck the Warriors led for part of the 3rd quarter. It just eventually caught up to them and they couldn't hold back the Suns' offensive onslaught. Simply put, the Suns made more shots (45 to 43) on 23 less attempts. You do the math.

Not enough stops
In the closing minutes of the 4th, the Warriors just couldn't get enough stops. While the Warriors continued to score, so did the Suns. Trading baskets just doesn't get it done. So, as always, the Warriors win or lose based on their ability to play defense. We all know they're going to score, but if they don't bring it consistently and with enough energy on defense, they will struggle to win.

Looking Ahead
I'm disappointed the Warriors didn't win because they really could have capitalized on tonight and altered the standings a bit. After 3 games against sub-.500 teams (Memphis, Sac, Clips), the Warriors go on a ROUGH stretch of games. Houston, Lakers, Lakers, Portland, Denver, Dallas, San Antonio, and then Dallas. Are you kidding me? Who are the schedule makers and why didn't they spread these teams out against the cupcakes the Warriors have been playing. Oy. That stretch may not make the season, but it could definitely break it. The Warriors NEED to win all 3 against the Grizz, Kings, and Clips to give them a little room for error against the West elite. Heh, at least we're done with Utah.

Baron Davis
On national tv, against the Suns, was there any doubt BD would be the Warrior Wonder?

Monta's poor shooting
I think Monta's poor shooting is either because he's fatigued, because the opponent defense is double teaming him, or because Phoenix got physical with him tonight. I remember hearing him saying that he was off during the first few weeks of this season because he was worried about taking another bad fall like the one in preseason. Maybe he's subconsciously thinking about that again after getting knocked around tonight. It could also be the pressure of making the playoffs. I don't know if he's learned to deal with it yet.

But hopefully, it was all just a bad shooting night.

It was just a bad night, he is human. Those jumpers usually go in for him, he was just off tongiht.

agreed
no one can keep up the pace he's been on night in and night out without an off night here and there.

I like the word night as you can see.

On the topic of his preseason fall.  I don't think he's still scared of anything.  The kid goes right at the basket almost everytime he has the ball and challenges 2 sometimes 3 guys...and makes it too!  He's definitely playing fearless basketball right now.

Monta will be a consistent all star....guaranteed

i felt those 3's by nash killed the warriors in the 3rd quarter, felt like nobody could put a body on amare, and the shots were not falling as usual for monta.

why are the clippers and grizz next? we need a playoff caliber team to play next game so we can beat on them and vent our frustration.

Jax was gimpy
Pietrus had 16 and Buke had 10 in 20 minutes. Jax was gimpy in the 2nd half and had to be taken out. Al and Jax were a combined 8 for 24 from the field. Monta also hurt us on the defensive end, forgetting assignments and not closing out on the perimeter, he didn't make many of his elbow jumpers. The back to back definitely hurt our defensive energy in the 4th. While the warriors were able to lead by 5 at halftime, mostly off of points off turnovers despite poor shooting; phoenix buckled down and was able to secure the ball in the 2nd half. Being outscored by 16 in the 3rd quarter requires a perfect 4th quarter and they just didn't have it in them tonight.

Back to Back? Whateva
If the warriors had beat the bosh-less raptors handily and given their starters some second half rest they would've had a damn good chance to win this game. Take the orlando game for example. We blew out the heat the night before and many didn't expect us to win the game but the rest from the miami game gave us the energy to play lock down defense in the 2nd half. Warriors are now 9-7 on the end of back to backs. I guess nellie had no choice in sealing the raptors game with our starters after giving up an 18 point lead, and was hoping we could pull one out tonight.

UGH
I haven't been this pissed after a regular season loss in a long time. Jackson and Monta weren't up to their normal shooting nights, we didn't rebound, we didn't defend, it was just ugly. Baron was the only bright spot in that game. When the opposing team gives up THAT many turnovers and picks up 4 technical fouls, you shouldn't lose. Also, I'm not one to blame officiating, and the refs were far from the reason we lost, but I felt like the second half calls were leaning towards the Suns in an unfavorable manner. I love these big games, but we just played awful. Oh, and I know you all love my sig pic, but seriously, if the only responses to my posts are going to be about my sig pic, I'm gonna change it...not to be a douche.

The feeling's mutual
It's the day after, and I'm still grumpy about the loss. We could have inched closer to Dallas and Phoenix in the standings, and proved that we belong in the playoffs conversation as much as any team in the West, AND shown the national audience once again the thrill ride that is the Warriors.

Why We Lost
In the last previous games against the Suns, the Warriors dominated.  I noticed that there's something we did in those games which we did not do as well this game.

I remember our offense always had a purpose.  That purpose was to pick and pick and pick until we got Baron isolated on Nash in the post.  We'd do that verbatim until either Baron got an easy bucket or he was double teamed and someone else got an open shot.

I didn't see that enough this game.  The Warriors should have exploited Nash every single time the Suns weren't in a zone.  However, they didn't.  The ball was just swung around the perimeter until guys like Pietrus and Harrington decided it was the right time to take a contested jumper.

I kind of blame Nelly for not forcing that issue more.  Nash can't guard Baron, Ellis, Buke, or Jackson (or any of our rotation players) and he should have been exploited more.  That's how we always beat the Suns.  That gameplan kind of got away from us this time.

I'm aware Baron did get a boatload of points.  But he could've gotten alot more (and alot easier) by just posting up Nash.

Question for anyone:
That play in the 1st quarter where Shaq posted up Harrington, knocked Al to the ground with his shoulder and then tripped over Al (who didn't have time to move or try to trip him) and missed the shot. The ref called a foul on Harrington. Does anyone know why that was a foul?

Couple of things:

  • This was a horribly officiated game, and I think it hurt the Suns more than the Warriors. One of the worst I've seen this year.
  • It's a missed opportunity, but you can't win every game and this one was an excusable loss.
  • Has Harrington ever made a 3 when he's a couple of steps behind the top of the circle 3-point line?
  • I thought Doug Collins was pretty bad. He didn't really add anything to the telecast. My wife said he talks like he was a grief counselor or a therapist for abused children. I guess I'm just spoiled because Jim always explains strange plays. That Harrington foul that I mentioned above, was completely disregarded. Barnett 4-ever!!!
  • I was laughing D'Antoni flipped out at Diaw for throwing the ball away into one of the Warrior's legs. He came storming out screaming and waving his arms. Can you imagine if he had to coach MP2? BTW, I am probably the biggest MP2 supporter I know. He doesn't make more mistakes than anybody else, it just looks that way because the mistakes he does make are spectacularly idiotic. That guy can rebound an block shots like a maniac for his size and he's hilarious. Thought he did the best job on Nash tonight out of everybody.

Harrington foul
I think they called a foul on him because it was a flop.

by jlagace on Mar 14, 2008 4:10 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They called a shooting foul
The "flop" happened, then Shaq made another move and tripped over Harrington and then they called a foul on the shot. The foul call was on the secondary move.

Officiating
I didn't think the 2nd half officiating was that bad. Maybe pac-10 officiating has warped my perception, but at least the refs didn't help decide the game. I guess you could say the suns got the benefit of the doubt the 2nd half, but it wasn't like they were trying very hard to get to the fouline and the bonus didn't really come into play. Beans did get into foul trouble early, but we didn't use him enough while he was in.

UGH
with all the T fouls SUNS had(4of them) , i thought we would capitalize on that put on a lot of pressure . But not a lot of defense and scoring(except for Baron who was consistant). Hard fought game for the dubs but they came up short. Still 2games ahead but i think Denver is playing today right?

big sequence
is when thw Warriors had been down 14 and cut it to six in the fourth quarter. Monta missed both FT's which would have cut it to 4. Suns come down and hit back to back 3's.Boom were down 12  comeback energ sapped. Give the Warriors credit though for not mailing it in at that point.

I blame this on bad coaching
we were getting worked by their bigs and Nellie wanted to play Harrington (who you know wasnt going to bring m=nothing to the table) and Austin (nothing needs to be said here). I really think Nellies stubborness is hurting his team. In a game like this, we needed to use our length, and by length I mean Wright and hell, even Kosta. I don't accept the young and weak thing, Wright is long and he runs. A game like this, Wright would have made the difference. Length, length, length, LENGTH!!!

by ineemoney21 on Mar 14, 2008 8:52 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

So apparently
both Kosta AND Wright would've been able to guard Shaq and Amare. Yeah, I have a really hard time accepting that. Sure they both have length and size, but they're not strong enough or have the defensive techniques Al and Jack bring.

I didn't say STOP SHAQ & AMARE
I said that having some real legit length in the game during spurts where we are lacking in defense andenergy, those young legs and the energy that CAN be provided could have given the warriors the PICK-UP they needed. Remember during the point in the game where the SUNS took control, our OFFENSE was dry and slowed down with no movement, just post ups and one on one. We needed to get out and push the ball and our spark comes off defensive scrappyness and aggressivness. WRIGHT does that, Little plays here and there would have given us life that we lost throughout the game and no one else really was providing a spark, so WHY NOT try our young gunz and see what energy they can provide.

So remember, we are NEVER going to stop SHAQ and AMARE, but we can offset their production by stepping up our aggresivness ourselves and you KNOW we are a team that REALLY feeds off our own intensity and flow.

A game of two halves
This may seem out there a bit but I think the Dubs lost the game in the first half when they were only leading by 5 at the break. We dominated the Suns in the first half. The ball was moving around the Suns looked like they were barely keeping up. The only thing that kept them in the game in the first half was the officials. Their best offensive play was to get fouled on paint. It's so ironic that they were the ones complaining the whole game! Some may think that Biedrins played horribly defensively, but anybody who watched the game knows that he had no chance. He was called for fouls even as he was retreating, giving ground, not even jumping. What also happened is in the third quarter the ball stopped moving as the energy went down and we started relying on our one on one skills (something that will not work against a team with Nash and Amare). The Warriors need to use their speed to beat teams. I am sure that they can beat anybody if they play like they did in the first half. It looked like they were younger and hungrier early on. In order to keep that tempo, they have to spread the minutes around. It's just impossible to keep that kind of energy for 48 minutes. Didn't you guys think the passing and fast break were ridiculous in first half? One handed skip passes, guys streaking to the basket, it was ridiculous!!! It was great basketball, and it's so insane that a game as entertaining as that can come to a screeching halt because the Suns keep crying about the refs. I think I counted seven consecutive possessions in the third quarter where the Suns were at the line. What a joke! This isn't basketball anymore!

Blueprint for the league
Similar to the way the eagles showed the rest of the NFL how to stop the patriots last season, I think Phoenix' zone showed the rest of the league how to stop monte.

And where was Stephen Jackson? I thought his ankle was better, but last night's performance seemed like there was something wrong with him.

Lastly, I feel for Matt Barnes and the loss of his mother, but he needs some help mentally. His defense is still there, but his mental game has affected his offense and his shooting tremendously. He needs some sort of divine intervention to revive his touch back to where it was last season in the playoffs. Mrs. Barnes, if you're listening, can you help a brother out?

Isn't it ironic that a lot of us were saying we're gonna run Shaq off the floor... maybe we should've found a way to keep him on the floor.

Sometimes this happens
The Warriors had 20 more shots than the Suns, they just missed them.  If the dubs hit 5 more shots everyone's talking differently about this game.  Its way easier to guard a transition team when you make shots.  Though this hurts in the standings, this does nothing but add to my belief that the Warriors would win a 7 game series against this Suns team.

A'men brotha
I was extremely pissed about that prayer Nash put up towards the end of the first half.  I knew it was going in before it went up.  Anyways, echo:  We took 20 more shots than them.  They made 50% of their 3pointers.  The only people that do that are the guys in the 3point shooting contest, and that's just rhythm shooting.  If we shoot a little better and Nash doesn't drop that single 3 (not to mention countless others), we're singing a different tune.  Get over it.  They'll get another 3 game win streak before losing to whoever, pick themselves back up and keep on running.

As a side note, is it possible that all this running is what's keeping BD healthy?  If it's keeping his weight down and keeping his blood flowing, I'm sure it's helping.

Put the Game Behind Us
Still 18 games left and a lot of basketball to be played. We still have a lot to prove before we can lock a playoff spot. With 10 of our last 18 against the top 9 in the west, and a B2B against our most likely playoff matchup: the lakers.

LOSS -- It Happens
On a back-to-back and on the other's teams home court, several things have to go right -- to get a win.

It looked ok in first half. But the Dubs usual 1st quarter malaise hit in the 3rd quarter -- and it was game over.

But, that game was much more like a playoff atmosphere in PHX, so lets hope some of those players who had bad games will learn something about what they need to do to step up under those conditions.  Whether they are on their games or not.
