OPEN THREAD: Game #65- Warriors vs Grizzlies

Warriors (W-L): 40-24
Grizzlies (W-L): Lottery Bound
TV: FSN Bay Area
Radio: KNBR 680

Make the jump for some links and goofy predictions.

Star-divide

Pre-game Linkfest:

The Warriors MUST win this game. No excuses.

Predictions

  • Warriors by 10
  • Boom Dizzle, Jack, and Monta "only" have to play 35 minutes each.
  • Hakim Warrick does some nasty breakaway dunk.
  • Monta puts up an easy 30 points against the soft Grizzlie D.
  • Rudy Gay drops 25 points.
  • Mickael Pietrus continues his solid play and sprinkles in 2 blocks and a steal.
  • Warrior Killer Mike Miller makes the game closer than it should be.
  • Kosta Coast sighting- just seeing if you're paying attention.
  • Andris Biedrins comes out of his recent slump and dominates Darko Belinelli. Seriously though, should Darko and Marco trade first names? Marco Milicic just flows off the tongue. Darko Belinelli just characterizes Marco's rookie season so well.
  • With the Warriors up by 20 at one point in the game, Darko Marco Milicic tries to talk trash by pointing to his ring finger. Don't forget Darko Marco has 1 more championship ring than draft classmates LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Bosh. Don't hate on Darko Marco!
  • We all rejoice that the Warriors get to play the Grizz one more time this season on April 4th!

Make sure to post your game predictions and thoughts in the comments. Can we top 456? We shall see my golden peoples. We shall see. (Actually that might be more interesting than the game itself!)

mmm... tough to say. I say "we should win" but ever since the Timberwolf game I always think we're going to lose by 1 to these teams.

We win....
Hey is anyone else still depressed about that Suns game? It reminded me of the playoffs against Utah in Utah. Its like we are almost good enough but still not quite there for some reason.

I wouldn't say depressed
I'd say GRUMPY. I want the Warriors to come out swinging and run the Grizzlies out of the gym. I want revenge. I want blood. I want guts.

Unfortunately, I'm just a fan, and not one of the Warriors, so it's up to them to make me feel better.

wtf
that guy is a idiot.. monta ellis is a restricted free agent not a unrestricted.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=2008freeagents

and ellis will be resigned.. he is the future of the franchise... "Where Tomorrow Happens".. the whole point of giving up JRich is so we can keep Ellis.. losing Ellis now would make that trade kinda pointless.

yes
after I owned him with my comments :)

by saintdee on Mar 15, 2008 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

wait a second...
so like everyone else, i thought monta will be a restricted FA... but then i read this from wikipedia:

For 1st-round draft picks, restricted free agency is only allowed after a team exercises its option for a fourth year, and the team makes a Qualifying Offer at the Rookie-scale amount after the fourth year is completed. For any other player to be a restricted free agent, he must be less than a three-year NBA veteran, and his team must have made a Qualifying Offer for either 125% of his previous season's salary or the minimum salary plus $150,000, whichever offer is higher.

Monta will NOT be less than a three year nba veteran... unless i'm missing something...?

by Run Dubz Run on Mar 15, 2008 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

RFA
This article, which is a bit scary, does call him a restricted free agent.

http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2008/mar/15/griz-seek-talent-like-ellis/

We should have no problem re-signing him if that's what the front office decides to do.

Why don't more people just google this instead of trying to decipher the rules for this stuff.

by saintdee on Mar 15, 2008 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

pure curiosity.
and who knows? maybe one person made a mistake or an assumption, and everyone else copied him.

by Run Dubz Run on Mar 15, 2008 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here you go...
Restricted free agency exists only on a limited basis.  It is allowed following the fourth year of rookie "scale" contracts for first-round draft picks (see question number 41).  It is also allowed for all veteran free agents who have been in the league three or fewer seasons.  However, a first round draft pick becomes an unrestricted free agent following his second or third season if his team does not exercise its option to extend the player's rookie scale contract for the next season.  All other free agency is limited to unrestricted free agency.

This is from Larry Coons FAQ.

This is Monta's third year, so there you go. It looks like whoever made the Wiki page was a little off.

If you are into this sort of thing you should bookmark the link to the Larry Coon FAQ. I have used it more times than I thought I would. Props to Larry on a great resource for hoops junkies.

by olympicmike on Mar 15, 2008 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

alright...
but logistically speaking, why is monta ellis a restricted free agent?

by Run Dubz Run on Mar 15, 2008 7:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i think
Ellis signed a three-year contract after he was drafted, meaning the Warriors would hold his full rights and can match any offer he receives this summer without regard to their salary-cap status.

by saintdee on Mar 15, 2008 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think
that what you said explains why Ellis has Bird rights, not why he is restricted.

I know Pietrus has been playing much better
but Harrington has been playing much worse. So I don't think either of them can handle being on the bench. Well, hopefully Harrington can, and he'll come around. It would be awesome if he started playing like he did out of training camp.

Also, I've made up my mind about Baron threes. Against an elite team (or at least a team the Warriors get up for) he should shoot the three whenever he wants to. But against a lesser team like Memphis, Baron should not shoot the three unless it is a close game in the fourth quarter.

by belilaugh on Mar 15, 2008 8:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

interesting take but
that Harrington was a runner-up for 6th man of the year in 2003 and had several good years coming off the bench for Indy.

HIT A THREE!!!!!!!!!!!

by Run Dubz Run on Mar 15, 2008 8:24 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Barnes
when making cuts, really has no sense of his position on the floor. When he tries those little quick layups, they are guesses as much as shots.

Still, he hit a three, let's hope he can find his stroke, because that would be huge. We need someone out on the floor to throw those home run passes.

Does anybody know the name of the song the W's play at the end of the first half?  It's the funky 70's sounding song they play at halftime when the teams are still walking back to the locker rooms.  Thanks.
