Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

OPEN THREAD: Warriors @ Kings

fsn

Warriors (W-L): 41-24

Kings (W-L): 30-36

Time: 7:00PM PST tip off

TV:FSN

Vegas Odds: Golden State by 1 (source: yahoo.com)

Golden State by 1?!!! C'mon Yahoo... seriously?!

Unfortunately yes. While the Kings are not exactly mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, they are in a position to put a dent into our current 8th seed bid. And the loss of Bibby hasn't exactly slow them down.

JUMP!!

Star-divide

Yes. This is a game that we should win. But the Warriors have a knack for making these kinds of matchups nail biters. It seems as though the good people at Yahoo have finally realized that. The Kings haven't found their rhythm this season but, much like us, they are capable of dispatching some pretty serious teams. If memory serves me correctly, they were able to topple the first place Lakers (cringe) no more than a week and a half ago.

These boys can score.

Kevin Martin is a future all star in the making. Anyone who has seen him play knows that he is fully capable of lighting up for 20+ in Arco tonight. Mikki Moore is a certified Warrior Killer. Brad Miller seems to consistently enjoy having his way with us in the post. And Ron Ron?!

Well, that fool is just plain crazy. But he can still ball it up.

In our past two meetings, the Kings have managed to keep the scores close and, consequently, our butts at the edge of our seats. Although we've taken all of our previous meetings this year, the Kings are no pushover. And this is simply not the time to let them take control of this Northern California rivalry.

We have way more to lose tonight than they do. Let's play like it.

EVERY. GAME. COUNTS.

Predictions

* Arco plays host to more Warrior fans than Kings fans tonight.
* We keep Martin to under 15.
* Barnsie has a big night against his former hometown
* Warriors by 7

Yes this is a team we should beat and we play down to the competition but this is also a Road Game and we play really tough on the road!

But its the first game of a back to back so who knows. Anyone know our record on the first half of back to backs?

I'm hoping we were just tired tonight, but if we were, then I don't know why Nelson would ride the starters. Hopefully they can show some fight in the fourth, it's not like they've used any energy so far.

Do you guys
all really think we would have come back for a win if the bench was kept on? They would have cooled off and we would have still lost. Then everyone would have said "Why didn't Nellie bring BD back in?!" We deserve this loss no matter which way you look at it. Kings lead the league in turnovers while we lead the league in causing turnovers. But looking at the stats you would have never been able to tell. The reason we lost this game: horrible defense.

by sunghan on Mar 18, 2008 9:30 PM PDT reply actions

That's BS
Bench was playing with massive amounts of confidence, and had the Kings playing with zero confidence. Baron comes in, takes an ill advised three (which if it goes in would have been deadly), misses a technical FT (even though Jackson was in), Kings gain back their confidence and put the game away. We'll never know but I think they could have had it.

what is nelson watching?
baron obviously has no shot today. it was also about time that he saw wright was more effective than biedrins also. if it werent for wrights prescense, there would be no run.

great way to cost us a game, nelson!!!!

Bd had it going in the 1st half. You can't have your best player not in the game in a crucial part of the game. Wright should have gotten more PT though. I would have liked to see if he could have guarded artest for a bit. Artest is probably to quick and strong for him but i think his length would have disrupted him. I would at least tried something in the 3rd instead of letting the game slip away and in a last ditch effort in the 4th and put the bench in.

we should complain, because these are one of those should be "easy" wins for us and we have to capitalize on every shot we get. we play LAL twice this and next week, should I believe that we will win both? hell no!

Monta Ellis
Monta Ellis was a ghost in this game. He normally plays well against the Kings and didn't do it tonight. We let Anthony Johnson play at an All-Star level. We just couldn't hit the three-pointer tonight. Matt Barnes also deserves the blame for playing poorly. He also plays well against his former teams. Why he didn't do so tonight was just disappointing. I hope we'll enjoy a crucial victory tomorrow versus the Paper Clips.

Monta's excuse
I'd give Monta a pass for this game because of the incident with his brother.

by IQofaWarrior on Mar 18, 2008 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

re
plays well offensively that is. Defense is where its killing the team and his lack of offense tonight hurt. teams aren't leaving the paint so he can drive and get layups. teams are adapting to his play and making it harder for him to drive, while taking advantage of his lack of defense. You don't think other temas realize he shot 60% for a month and don't think they need to do something to stop him? Like Barrnet said monta well need to grow as a player to combat teams shutting down the lanes to the hoop. there were literally 3 guys waiting for him at times or at least crowding the lane. he's just going to have to play throw it and adapt which he will.

A
little defensive effort in the 3rd quarter would have kept us close. Simply no excuse for coming out flat in the third. No energy at all..... it was sad to see them play that bad in the 3rd quarter.

Kings are tough
because the team probably looks at them as a bad/mediocre team, but they aren't as bad as their record suggests. The Clippers are as bad as their record suggests, so the Warriors lackluster effort should be enough.

Although, anytime the Warriors need a spark, they should put in B Wright.

Good to see Azubuike playing good tonight, CJ Watson playing pretty good. Hopefully a wake up call, the time is running short for wake up calls.

Also, this will definitely prepare the Warriors for the rematch against the Kings, which could be a far more crucial game. Hopefully the next Kings and Phoenix games are routs.

Shouldn't have put in Baron
This is like the Jazz game. Where the Warriors were getting spanked and you can tell the starting unit lost it. You put in the bench and give em time not risking injury and looking forward to the next game. You hope that the bench gets in some minutes and see what kind of spurt they can do. Basically you catch the other team napping and the bench has energy and something prove. It worked for the Jazz and they came within 8. THere was time left in tonight's game and they put in Baron and he didn't help one bit. Took ill advised shots, instead of S-jax taking the technical free throw, Baron did and he missed it.It summed it up right there. THe chemistry bombed. From a bench mob bringing the game back to a 17 point route again. They had a next day game and they just wasted time. Sometimes you can tell if they got it or not. That's all I'm saying. Reward the players who brought you back in the game. Ride em while they're hot ey?

I loved
the run in the 4th quarter with Wright, 'buke and Watson.  But Barnes just cannot be left in the game in crucial situations anymore...  He commits the dumbest fouls at the worst times, some bordering on flagrant..  And he's been clanking shots worse than Bedrins free throws all year.

Great guy that caught fire at the end of the year last year but I think there's a reason he's played on twice as many teams as the number of years he's been in the league.  He deserves more chances but after having only 1 or 2 decent games the entire season its clear he shouldn't be on the floor in the clutch right now.

At least this game shows that
our bench can actually produce when given time.  If our starters are sucking, sticking some bench guys in there isn't so bad.  Especially since they would be so happy to finally play that they will actually TRY on defense, which is the major problem with this team, lack of effort/skill on the defensive end.  We're one of the youngest teams in the league, so don't tell me we're tired.  And if we really are tired, then sticking the bench in will help rest our starters and get fresh legs on the court.  And since both Denver and Dallas lost, this loss hurts, but not AS much.

by Calamity on Mar 18, 2008 10:53 PM PDT reply actions

Well
what can you do if you have a stubborn coach like Nellie who will rather die then give someone a chance.
I mean we all know that B-nellie can hit threes in series so if he can't play(altough I'm not sold on this)D then he's perfect for this team!!!

If Wright would play earlier we wouldn't be blown on offensive rebounds like we were(5 offensive rodmans in one possesion. It becomes even more obvious why Nellie has never won it all, despite having the second most wins.

What you thought that I only played basketball? I AM A Golden State WARRIOR!

by 24k state fan since 87 on Mar 19, 2008 1:29 AM PDT reply actions

the solution to a lack of energy is simple
to nearly anyone with half a brain - put someone else in.  hmm, my guys are flat, and have been for 8 minutes now, in which time we've fallen to 23 points down.  sure the guys down the bench have plenty of energy/enthusiasm to contribute, but i'm just going to sit here and wait for this obvious trend to reverse itself.

we all have to provide the disclaimer that Nelson knows more basketball than us, but that shouldn't exempt him from a very basic criticism surrounding a very basic strategic premise.  the one thing he is guilty of over and over and over again, and is beyond argument, is the absolute fear of holding his "stars" accountable.

once the 2nd unit had proven itself to be the better solution this particular night, reducing the deficit to 6 and making the game fun to watch again, it gets tweaked at the next stoppage.  why?!  Barnes out for Baron because he had just committed ONE silly foul in the course of playing too tightly on defense?  i'll take an effort foul any day when the overall result is the run we were having.  any one in the first unit every get subbed for a stupid foul?  Baron, each time his pride's hurt on the offensive end and proceeds to just hip check the opposing point guard 5 seconds later (every time) as he crosses midcourt?  man.

the occasion like this, when Nelson spends an entire quarter refusing to entertain an alternative to what's blatantly broken, and then, once he does, and it proves to work, "fixing" what's not...

trivialize the 2nd unit all you want, write it off as a game they "certainly would have lost anyway" if they'd been left in to finish it.  how do we know?   how can you possibly know?  how about believing in momentum.  how about rewarding the effort by letting them take ownership of the last couple minutes.  is losing with Baron chucking up the last 3 misses some kind of consolation?  - we've gotten back in the game with hustle, ball movement, scrappiness, hunger, enthusiasm - let's put a cooled off starter back in who we know will dominate the ball, who by default sets a much different tone for the role players out there with him, and let him shoot us in or out of this.  the logic escapes em.
