OPEN THREAD: Game #67- Warriors vs Clippers- House of Horrors

Warriors and Clippers fans have always had a special connection.
[via Deadspin]

Warriors (W-L): 41-25
Clippers (W-L): Playing Super Lotto
TV: ESPN + ESPN 360
Radio: KNBR 680
Time: 7:30 PST

Of all the Warriors games to put on national TV, they pick this one? Make the jump for a little WarriorsCenter.

Star-divide

The Warriors dropped a tough one last night to the Sacramento Kings. Baron Davis didn't hit those crazy BD-shots in the 4th, Monta Ellis was stifled by the physicalness of the Kings defense, Ellis, Kelenna Azubuike, and Andris Biedrins forgot to play defense, Stephen Jackson was in foul trouble early and often, the now super happy Mickael Pietrus came back down to earth, and Ron Artest was well... Ron-Ron. God they should've traded for him.

More on game #66:

But we shall move on...

The Warriors and Clippers have squared off twice this season:

It's been quite some time since the Warriors last won in LA- against the Clippers or Lakers period. That has to end soon since the Warriors play there 4 times a season. Tonight's their best bet. Clips breakout center Chris Kaman and rookie stud Al Thornton don't look like they'll be playing. Big man extraordinaire Elton Brand is of course still out. This leaves the Mike Dunleavy Sr. with Cory Maggette and a bunch of guys who make nice backups, but wouldn't start on the overwhelming majority of the teams in the league.

Here's what my boy DJ Fuzzy Logic said about this game in this week's Counting W's segment.

The Clippers always seem to have the Warriors' number. Perhaps it was some curse or hex that Mike Dunleavy Sr. had on his son Mike Dunleavy Jr. while with the Warriors, which had some debilitating effect on the Warriors at-large. Since the departure of Dunleavy Jr., the Warriors have managed to win a few more games against their conference rival. Plus, an injury depleted Clippers means the Warriors have set sail for another win! Well, it probably won't be that easy. Historically, Corey Maggette and Chris Kaman have proved too much to handle for the Warriors. Maggette is pretty high percentage shooter, but will look to put in on the floor and attack the basket if his 10 free throw attempts per game are any indication. Kaman has shown this season his ability to dominate the post against the Warrior "bigs"; but his injuries as of late have hampered his improvements this season both on the offense and defensive end (3 blocks a game). The resurgence of what looks to be Corey Maggette 2.0 in Al Thorton has been one of the intriguing subtexts to an otherwise disappointing season of injuries. He's been lighting up against almost everyone and getting it done on the glass as well. Yet, this current assemblage of players might give the Warriors some trouble since it's a back to back for our dubs. But with perennial cast-aways Dan Dickau, Smush Parker, and Brevin Knight are co-managing your point position all season, you know that the team is already thinking about next season.

Prediction: 1 more for the W column

A loss here on national TV would not only be painful, it would be stupid.

Also make sure to head on over to Clips Nation. ClipperSteve dropped science in his Q&A with us. The man knows his stuff.

Predictions:

  • Warriors by 5 to finally end to drought in Staples.
  • Boom Dizzle notches a triple double.
  • Corey Maggette goes to the free throw line 15 times on his way to 20-12.
  • Al Harrington drops 20 big ones.
  • Former Warrior Josh Powell is tonight's Warrior Killer, but not the Warrior Wonder.

Make sure to post your game predictions and thoughts in the comments.

Some type of optimism may heal wounds
http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/sports/kings/archives/011197.html
Less than four minutes into play on Tuesday night at Arco Arena, Ron Artest was clearly fed up with Kings coach Reggie Theus. There had been an exchange in which Artest asked Theus about a play call from the floor and appeared less than thrilled with how the conversation had gone. And seconds later, there was Artest staring at Theus from afar while the coach continued on with his duties. A few minutes later, Theus finally acknowledged the obvious as Artest continued looking in his direction. He shrugged his shoulders and said, "What?"

As long as it's mentioned...
...I feel like I should keep throwing in some thoughts as to why Artest wouldn't have worked.

Short term, I think he becomes an irrelevance. If you trade for Artest you're essentially asking either him or Jackson to play to 4 permanently, or you're asking Jackson or Ellis to move to the bench, a move that could well disrupt their games (especially as Monta was in his godlike form from February). Artest also doesn't improve our rebounding that much, as he pulls just 5.3 for his career, extremely similar to what we're getting out of Al Harrington right now. He is certainly a better defender than Harrington, but the nature of the likely starting lineup would be pushing either Jack or Artest to guard a PF full-time, which I doubt very much either of them can do. Perhaps Artest could help out against the sorts of undersized PFs who've torched us, but I'm honestly more worried about guys like Boozer, Duncan, Gasol and so forth, guys that are too damn big for Artest.

Also, you're talking about asking a guy do play an unnatural position who has, even in the most positive interpretations of his actions, a suspect track record as far as being a team player goes. I read the articles and interviews where he gave his side of the Detroit brawl incident, and yes, he was provoked, and obviously so. But there's still a big disconnect between the provocation and the response.

Admittedly tangentially as well, the specific interview with Artest that I read (would like to find it again), he makes specific point of expressing displeasure that the guy who provoked him was some "white guy." It sounds trite to say, but if I made a similar remark about being punked by "some black guy," I'd be labeled a racist. Believe me, I have no delusions regarding the societal factors that make that the case, nor would it ever come up, because I don't process my views on a racial level, and I'd like to hope the people I'm rooting for don't view me as unworthy because I'm white.

Reason
why this is on ESPN is because of the battle for the 8th spot last season, I believe.

Must win game...
...I hate to use that term but these are the type of games (like last night) that SHOULD be won. The good news is that the Dubs have had only one back 2 back loss this season, that is a crazy stat. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Let's blow this team out early so we could see more B-Wright.

Back to back losses
Not one the entire season, but only once since the o-6 start. Still a big accomplishment though.

we
dunno.. ESPN is usually good for us. See  phx game and bulls game.

but you never know with this team.. sometimes I think we're exactly like the Nuggets.. we play no defense and we play down to our opponent. Them losing their huge lead and losing to bucks is like us losing our huge lead and losing to the bobcats...

their fans also complain about a lack of urgency, heart, will to play defense etc etc.

Spring break is over. Our finals are coming up. 8 tough games against the West, starting with Houston on Friday.

by IQofaWarrior on Mar 19, 2008 10:07 PM PDT   0 recs

Obviously this game proves nothing
but if Marco was as big a bust as some here say he is, how the hell did he make that insanely high degree of difficulty shot? God I love watching him shoot. All this game says to me is the jury is still out on Belinelli, stop jumping to conclusions.

by belilaugh on Mar 19, 2008 10:07 PM PDT   0 recs

he's terrible

you still gotta call him a bust because at this point you can't call him a success.
