RECAP: Warriors 119, Lakers 123: Revenge of the Fakers

What was the greatest game of the year ended in the worst possible way ... due to a STUPID call by a pretty good referee! I've never been one to bash on the refs because I feel it always comes back both ways ... but tonight's episode was worse than anything I've seen in years.

Let's see how it unfolded ...
jump

Star-divide

1st Quarter – They Attacked, but we defended.

With the evil empire storming upon the Oracle with their AT Walkers, our alliance held firm with our starting five of Baron (Solo), Monta (Luke), Harrington (Lando), Biens (Just Biens) and Captain Jackson. The crowd of Ewoks poured into the Oracle to root the Warriors on as annoying storm troopers snuck in peppered through the crowd hoping to make a scene.

The dark side was strong and our players were sluggish and careless to begin the battle. The emotional and physical ride of last night’s game had taken its toll, and it was clear from the start, no one was ready to run. Bad passes led to easy turnovers, and easy layups turned into failed attempts. Our team was hustling, but they looked like overweight hamsters on a treadmill, little legs running real fast but going nowhere.

Vader (Kobe), while not scoring, was directing his squad through the mess. With sharp passes and transition defense, he waited for his time to pounce. Sidekick Lamar Odom, the evil empire’s AT general, was still a force. He was grabbing boards on each side of the court and our Warriors were unable to penetrate past him.

Yet the Warriors were resilient and able to pull out the 8 point lead to end the first. Luke Skywalker sailed to the rim countless times stirring the Ewok crowd into a frenzy, making up for his missed shot attempts.

Warriors 28, Fakers 20

Yea, he's the one!

2nd Quarter – Sloppy Joe!

The second quarter picked up right where the first ended, as Skywalker’s shooting percentage was down. His creative plays towards the basket gave us the attack but no one on the team was able to finish. Baron, Harrington, even Biens grabbed rebounds but couldn’t put it in the net.

It was as if the conversation on the court sounded like this:

"Man, you so sloppy" Baron chuckles.
"What is this sloppy?" Biens was confused and forgot to box out.
"Hey that should be a new bay area slang" Jackson chimmed in. "You so sloppeee"
The three laughed. "Slooopppeee" Harrington exaggerates.
"Slooopppeee" all 5 are singing.
"FOCUS" Nellie screams as Biens picks up another foul.

The Fakers used this to their advantage as they quickly jacked up 3 pointer after 3 pointer. Vader wasn’t scoring much but he guided his team in all other categories, mainly assists. He drove to the basket and dished the ball out to Fisher countless times for the threes.

The Darkside seemed to be settling further onto the court when with 1 minute remaining in the half Baron and Monta combined for 6 points with incredible plays. Baron first drove through the Fakers, wrapping the ball around himself for an acrobatic layup and Monta floats a 3 point buzzer beater to end the half.

Warriors up by 11!

At the half Han and R2 pose w/ the fans.

3rd Quarter – The Dark Side is Strong

Hoping we would learn from last night’s game about coming out of halftime with some energy didn’t really sink in. Just like the night before, the Warriors seemed lackadaisical as they settled for ill advised jump shots and played porous defense. As our lead diminished, we then resorted to jacking up 3’s that hit rim and gave Odom more rebounds.

21 to be precise. It seemed as though he covered ever inch of the court and forced Biens into a quick 4 fouls relegating him to the bench.

The Warriors only had 2 bright spots so far for the game. The first was the defense Jackson and BD played on Vader. They controlled him from scoring but not assisting. Containing him was our only way to stay ahead in this game. Secondly, it was all Buike. Showing more heart than all the players on the court combined, he played very well. Intelligent steals and offensive positioning made it easier for BD, Monta and Jackson to get open. He was also able to grab 7 rebounds and make the open shots.

As the third came to a close, Vader still didn’t have too many points but the Fakers took the lead by one.

Back to his native pastime. Fouling out!

4th Quarter – Vader’s Revenge

The mood was darker and we all knew the time had come for Vader to take over. With only 10 points in the game so far, Vader became unconscious shooting the ball as if he was playing NBA JAM on Nintendo. Fade away 3’s with a hand in his face, turnaround jumpers, and crazy layups through traffic gave the Fakers an 8 point lead with 5 minutes remaining.

Suddenly Han Solo got the bright idea that if you can’t stop him, hit him in the face with your elbow. And it worked. As Vader’s head rung for minutes, it gave the Warriors enough time to crawl back into it. 2 minutes remaining, reminiscent of last night, the Warriors were down by 9 points when they made 2 incredible steals. Working all the way back, Baron ties the game with 3 seconds left at the free throw line.

YES! Fisher missed the buzzer shot to force overtime. Our hearts were pounding and our Ewok crowd was roaring. The force was in the air and we believed, we just believed we had a chance to close this out and win the series for the first time in a decade.

Overtime – The call that ruined everything

5 minutes was all that was in the way to victory. Special K (Buike’s nickname and I’m sticking to it) was HUGE! Lunging towards the basket on the first play creating a foul gave the Warriors the first lead. Monta contributed as he picked up his play nailing an open shot and creating another steal.

As our hearts pounded in excitement and fear, Vader once again assisted to Fisher for a 3 pointer. Clock winding down this is how it ended:

58 Seconds Left: Warriors with a 1 point lead.

43 Seconds Left: Fakers distribute the ball as they nail a 3 pointer to take the lead by 2.

30 Seconds Left: Monta drives to the basket and as the ball rims out Special K puts it in to tie the game. WHAT A PLAY!

9 Seconds Left: Fakers run the clock down as Odom grabs a pass in the paint for an easy layup. Fakers by 2.

4 Seconds Left: Inbound pass set in Faker territory. This is it. The last play of the game. Nellie’s timeout prepped the team to tie it or shoot a 3 for the win. As the whistle blew and the players wrestled for position … the unthinkable happened. Fisher fell to the ground grabbing Monta with him, and the ref Delaney, blew the whistle calling an offensive foul.

Game over. Episode over. YaoButtaMing’s emotional outburst … not over!

Vader and Baron ended the night with 30 points and 7 assists each. Jackson scored 29 but it wasn’t enough. Incredible game … but horrendous ending.

Warrior Wonder: Ok everyone … I have to give it to Special K, because he holds a special place in my heart! Let’s hear it in the comments. This guy kept us in both games!

Side Note: No winners in tonight’s contest. Try again next time.

SPECIAL THANKS TO TONY.psd for the great graphics!

nice
recap.. i dont know how you managed to write it.. if it was me this recap would be profanity laced.. and incoherent.

Hey Tony
I think Barnett liked your Monta cereal box so much that he's challenging you to make a new one...Special K to the rim!

then we will fight in the shade.

Grrr...
Some Warriors comments

Win or lose, this would have been a great game, and we could have been nitpicking the Warriors to find areas for them to improve, which surely there were. Instead, I'm mad that the refs took this game away because they fell for Fisher pulling down Monta.

It's us against the world now. Bring it on. Grrr...

Is being a real PITA on SFGate
My angle?? My only "angle" is to show why you whiney Warrior fans are COMPLETELY and TOTALLY WRONG.

I bring the facts and no one can argue them, but still somehow you are right??

Typical Bay Area Hippies.

Oh it is Baseball season...I guess the annual shipment of Sterioids and HGH should be making its way in to the Bay any day now.

Turned by the dark side
Nice recap.  I agree with you that the W/L is not the only measure of a great game, and this was one.  It's always a shame to see it decided by a bad call though, that's for sure.  I'm amazed Monta walked off the court with Fisher after that move.

Ellis and Buike continued to astound tonight.  And the shorter Warriors managed to come down with some fabulous rebounds.  I can't believe the number of blocks above the rim in these past two games on both sides.

as much
as the warriors neede to win this game.. but didnt cause of mr bob the ref. it was great to see buike in his early form and the azubuike i invision although he missed all of his three point attempts, it shows that nelson does have more weapons in the bench and i should assume he will should split minutes with buike n pieturs, while puttingat least a good 5-10 minute production by wright.

again, hate the loss, but hopefully we can get real lucky and win our games while dallas or denver losses some of theirs.

Stephen Jack
Did not TOUCH the ball in overtime.  He LITERALLY did not touch the ball in overtime other than when he was trying to inbound the ball with 4 seconds left when Monta got called for the foul.  Did anyone else notice that?  Could this have made a difference?  Considering Captain Jack's heroics yesterday, I'd say yes.

I thought I was trippin...
I noticed that too. I'm sure it would have made a hugh difference. He loves those moments where the games on the line. He's been knockin down clutch shots since he was in San Antonio. I thought he was gonna save that the day last night but unfortunately he didn't even get the chance to do so.

not necessarily true
yes stephen didn't touch the ball at all in overtime and much of the fourth, but that's mainly because he was exhausted!  i blame this game to nellie for not resting him at all.. if you watched the last 15 minutes of the game, jackson (who up to that point played amazingly well) did absolutely nothing.  he didn't rotate at all in the zone which led to wide open 3's, and he had zero offensive production.  if nellie could notice little things like this, he would sit him for 5 minutes, and bring him back re-energized!

wow ....ref ruined the game
Wow... we were all in the bar screaming at the top of our lungs to vent the frustration of seeing another nail-biting, chest pounding end of a game... come down to a "blown call" and a forgetable game to an otherwise awesome game between the lakers and warriors!

WOW>>> then on espn they dont even make a mention of the blown call? WTF? Not even a mention... Just says great game... ends with "a foul called in final seconds on monte ellis on derek fisher sealed it for the lakers" WTF?!?!?!

GO BD!

its like that on espn
because i think since they were using the laker version kcal9 that the announcers made it sound like monta ran him over. unlike bob who said it right. but thats how im guessing it was done did anybody watch the laker feed to see what they said on that play?

Just to give Fisher a fair trial
Video. Scroll to 7:15.

What happened was that Derek Fisher tripped over Al Harrington's foot, which caused Fisher to lose his balance and stumble backwards. While stumbling, Fisher pulled Monta down, possibly because Fisher already had a hold on him, or possibly to prevent Monta from breaking free. I couldn't tell which.

Moments afterwards, Al falls backwards onto Fisher's knee, so Fisher was probably legitimately bruised.

So it's all on Bob Delaney. Should have been a double foul, or no call, play on, but CLEARLY not an offensive foul.

by IQofaWarrior on Mar 25, 2008 2:38 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Er
it should have been a complete no call, play on. There was no foul from Monta Ellis.

by IQofaWarrior on Mar 25, 2008 2:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also...
if you watch the replay, you'll notice that Baron and Kobe did the exact same thing... except Kobe didn't trip over somebody's foot.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Mar 25, 2008 6:45 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

no accidental "fall"
Fish admitted as much afterward

Kobe did the same thing (see above) - too much for coincidence

the sideline ref should have overruled that call, but was likely screened by Jax inbounding - even with 3 they miss stuff

horrible way to end to be sure, but ask yourself if three days ago if someone had offered you a split in the LAL back2back, wouldn't you have taken it happily? - we were pretty close to losing both

by hardcore on Mar 25, 2008 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

After furthur review
because I'm still pissed about this, but after looking at it again, Fisher's left arm was free just before he tripped on Al's foot. As soon as he started to stumble and fall, Fisher's left arm grabs Monta's shoulder and pulls Monta off balance enough for Monta to stumble and fall on top of Fisher. And it looks just deliberate enough to believe that Fisher knew what he was doing.

Therefore, Fitz call was completely correct. I'm still pissed because several comments on Youtube called Fitz a homer and some other idiots on the Internet said that Monta was correctly called for the offensive foul.

So my final verdict, Fisher didn't flop and fake the fall, didn't fake the injury, but he played dirty by pulling down Monta to stop him. Grrr at Fisher...

On inbound plays and such
They should do like soccer does on corner kicks and free kicks.  If somebody's getting too physical, break 'em up and start over.

To echo IQofaWarrior.  Doesn't look like Fisher flopped this time... it looks like he tripped over somebody and since Monta was trying to run through him, they both fell.

Regardless, Monta was "Randy Moss"ing that play.  He knew he wasn't getting the ball, so he was just mindlessly running his route.  He literally ran right through Fisher.  He needs to keep his brain turned on and go around people if necessary.  Yeah Fish was holding him a bit, but he didn't even try to go around... just happy to jog straight through him.

In any case, it was a tough way to lose.  It was a tough 3 game stretch against the two of the top teams in the West, and we had a chance to win each one.

Sarcastically speaking
After watching the last few games - I can totally see why people believe that Andris "and-1" Beidrins is going to command AT LEAST 10 million a year this summer. He just hasn't been the same since the appendectomy - even Barnett was calling him out for horrendous offense and weak defense.

by triplesix on Mar 25, 2008 8:08 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Also,
this loss was in the third/fourth quarter again when the Warriors decided to jack up threes as though the Laker's still had Shaq on their team. It's inexcusable for a team that prides itself on offensive capabilities to be so offensively lazy time and time again. As fans we have seen it all year. I don't think we have played a 48 minute game yet and there only a few weeks left in the season. Yeah, the last play was tough but we shouldn't have been in that position - hell we probably shouldn't have forced OT with the way we were playing in the second half. If we would have pulled this one out we would all be feeling fortunate and a little lucky today. All I kept hearing on the telecast was how good the Laker's defense was. WHAT? Give me a break - if our players weren't so damn tired and constantly walking it up, no ball movement and jacking up shots (ill advised) we could have had 100 by the end of the third quarter. This team frustrates me to end sometimes - it's almost like they want to prove that they can play half-court with teams. Seriously, have any of us seen this much one-on-one ball all year?

by triplesix on Mar 25, 2008 8:19 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

what can we do???
We got snubbed, Again... But i'm not going to complain anymore!!! WE PLAYED our hearts out in this game. Everyone looked tired on the court, including the Lakers... But it was a damn good game and sometimes we're gonna get plays where we feel like we were cheated, but it happens to everyone in the league... Yea, we should have had this game; yea, we were cheated on the last play and yea, it makes me mad as a warrior fan... But atleast we took one from them on Sunday and did it with Fashion and good taste, witout all the BS calls. I mean look how we won on Sunday and look how they won yesterday!!! And al harrington, welcome back... I hope he continues to play better!!!

by DemDubz on Mar 25, 2008 8:39 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Professional Integrity?
is it too much to ask that players play with some integrity? that d.fish call was just ridiculous. but effectively it is like cheating. do players want to win games that way or by playing like professionals. that said it is prob just sour grapes, monte shoudl have been at the line with that nonsense.

not to be too critical but the play that cost them was the alley-wtf to monte by bd in ot that resulted in a turnover.

by blah2u on Mar 25, 2008 9:17 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

question...
Why didn't Monta rip Fisher down on the other end after the turnover? Woulda been classic! Although, the refs woulda still called a foul on us but it woulda been comical at least.

Lakers Broadcast!
So bad!!! Oh god I hate Stu Lance, he was convinced that Monta pushed Derek Fisher and the call was made correctly! Also, like I've been saying before and after he was with the Warriors, I dispise Derek Fisher and his flopping ways.

Besides that here is something else to laugh at.  They had a text message poll question during the 3/4th quarter.

Who was the biggest steal of the 2005 draft.
Choices: Monte Ellis, David Lee, Rony Turiaf.

Hmmm I wonder who the ignorant laker fans are going to pick.  I dont remember the exact percentages, but it was basically:
Monte 30%, Lee 5%, Turiaf 65%

What a stupid poll anyway, why is even Turiaf on that list.  Here are some players that are bigger steals than Turiaf in that draft.
Danny Granger, Jason Maxiel, Linas Kleiza, Brandon Bass, Louis Williams, Ryan Gomes

All I could say is WOW!  Atleast Warriors fans would be knowledgable enough to recognize a player outside of their own team.  Retards!

Major props
to Buike. He's a great role player when he gets the minutes. It was good to see him playing so well. He deserves the WW, sucks that he got it in a loss though.

Hated the way the last 4 seconds played out. It's just not the way to end such a close game. Unbelievable...I don't know how he could make that call or how the sideline ref didn't see anything. Fish CLEARLY tripped over Al's foot and brought Monta down with him.

Unfortunately, there's nothing that can be done when the ref decides the game on an idiotic call. The loss will stay. The sooner they put it behind them, the better. That goes for us too.

Big Fish
Let's see... Monta never extended his arms, so it's not like he put any arm into the push. Then the only possible "push" would have been if he simply barreled into Fisher. Let's break this down:

Monta Ellis: 177 lbs
Derek Fisher: 210 lbs

Right.

Fisher has always been pretty dirty and an actor, but has somehow established himself as a "classy" player.

Right.

Tough loss...
Hey guys, I knew yesterday was a heart-wrencher, but if it is any consolation, I found this quote from a lakers fan on the lakersblog.latimes.com concerning last night's call(wow!  talk about a run-on sentence!).

People, it was a flop. Even Fish admitted that he was surprised that the ref blew the whislte. He thought it was a no-call. I agree, there should have been no call on the play.

Please, let's call it what it is -- a gift. It happens. We'll take it. Thanks god they didn't get off a three. It would have probably gone in. So let's be good sports and concede that fortune was on our side in the last 3 seconds and we got a break.

Whew! What a 2-game set that was. Best of the season for sure.

Frustrating
Actually, now that you mentioned it.  What frustrated me about yesterday's game was the fact that a couple of the guys (monta, beans and big al to name a few) kept trying to get charge calls.  Even Barnett commented how players opt for a charge call rather than playing actual defense.  I totally agree since they should have known that the refs were on the lakers n*tz.  Play some D for crying out loud!

Man, I feel so much better now. I'll post some thoughts about the rest of the year tomorrow when I'm not so burnt out....First, the excrutiating loss to Los Chumps and then early this morning watching Huston Street and Emile Brown completely screwing the A's from a possible win. By the way, Saint, I did watch that play over again and Barton never was gonna get thrown out. E. Brown never looked at the 3rd base coach and just plain blew the play trying to make it to 3rd base.

Again, more tomorrow.....really burnt out. Go Dubs!

horrible call
but Monta has to know not to put himself in that position to be called for an offensive foul...refs can't see everything...

Al and BD should have set a screen for him and Captain Jack should have thrown the alley-oop (Nellie's call tho)

...and I agree with what some people were sayin that Dubs were tryin to flop more than usual...jus go for the block and if ur late..get out the way n hope to get the rebound...

I think
I think they were just tired. Not moving your feet, not reacting fast enough to challenge shots, and settling for 3's are trademarks of a tired basketball team, especially a smallball team. You probably do this every pickup game, you just don't chide yourself for it.

Adam Lauridsen says it all
Sure, Fisher gave a big "eff you" to the game of basketball, but
The above should not be read to say that the Warriors actually deserved to win Monday's match-up. They simply deserved to lose in a more honest fashion.

The Warriors' mistakes led to Fisher's opportunity to cheat, and it's unfortunate that he decided to go that route. Lousy basketball happens, but blatant unsportsmanlike behavior shouldn't even cross the mind of any professional athlete.

We're all B.D.'s sidekicks. He's got like five sidekicks. We're like the Power Rangers. - Al

Lousy basketball happens...
only when the refs allow it to happen...

No double foul or non call
The only foul is on Fisher. Watch the replay this is what happened. Fisher was back stepping not seeing where he was going. He trips over Harrington's foot. Starts to fall down. Probably realizing he doesnt wants to leave his man wide open. He decides is only choice is to pull down Monta with him.  He wasnt planning on doing it, But he did do it on purpose because when he fell it was the only way to not leave his man wide open for the tie or win.

Sucks because a defensive penatly before the inbound pass is free throws and the ball. That would have put us in good position, to tie with free throws and still have a chance for a shot to win or 2nd OT.  (Remember when Pietrus a year ago or so fouled before the in bound pass ending any chance of winning)

Nice vid
But I dont get what point your trying to make. Ellis is getting fouled in this video not flopping, so not like its pointing out the ref called it cause of ellis flopping.  So just wondering what exactly your trying to say by the ref must remember this.

Actually...
It looks like he does get clipped by the elbow, there's a pause while he realizes it, then the flop.  He does get hit, just not as hard as he made it seem.  He probably learned that by watching Lakers playoff games.

i
dont understand your point... so two players who  are known to flop falls to the ground and its automatically Ellis' fault because of taht video?

by saintdee on Mar 25, 2008 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No
just "that" video....;)'

better this way....
we could have just whupped the lakers easily in a back to back if Nellie had stayed away from smallball...better for the big picture that we lose last night for many reasons....great job on the writeups, star wars is the best and if you disagree you then you have no clue about nothin...All hail Dubtooine...

Remeber last year
Where we got majorly screwed by the refs in the Wizards game? What happened afterward? The 16-5 run to propel us to the playoffs. I believe it solidified our "us against the world" mentality, since we realized the refs were also against us. Wonder what will happen this year...
