OPEN THREAD: Mavs @ Warriors - In need of a miracle

warriors-mavs-march30.jpg

Warriors (W-L): 44-28

Mavs (W-L): 45-27

Time: 6:00PM PST tip off

TV:FSN

It would have to be Warriors luck that being 16 games over .500 might not be enough to qualify for the playoffs.

After stumbling a half step out of the final playoff spot, the Warriors should know there "ain't no half steppin'" in this league.  With a game separating the spots 7 through 9, every game the Warriors play is of major consequence!

Can Nellie's tools dismantle the house that he himself built, that being the Mavs, but has since been renovated by Avery Johnson?  Do the upgrades made -- the new crown molding around the doorways and windows in addition to the new granite countertops and cabinetry in the redone kitchen representative of the supposed benefits of Jason Kidd -- really make the Mavs THE team to beat???  How will they now match up against the Warriors?

Star-divide

With their window seemingly closing after a humiliating defeat at the hands of NBA cinderellas, our Golden State Warriors, the Mavs went out and got probably the best point guard of the last decade.  Whether it was his veteran experience, experience in an NBA Finals, or his ability to defend bulkier point guards that the once Mavs-point guard-of-the-future Devin Harris just couldn't do (as evidenced by Baron Davis' sheer domination of him last post-season), Jason Kidd's presence is supposed to make this Mav's team MORE of a contender.

But I'm not so sure I see it that way.  As odd as this might sound, Diop development as defensive interior presence this season was one of the major troubles the Warriors faced this season against the Mavs.  Being moved in the Kidd trade to New Jersey with Devin Harris, might make the Warriors ability to navigate into the paint much easier.  The Mavs are filled with sharp shooters; you know Jason Terry and Jerry Stackhouse can get hot.  The Warriors tend to have tons of troubles with undersized 4s and Brandon Bass will have the potential to be some major interior trauma for our Warriors.  The Mavs have been free falling of sorts in the last few games, so hopefuly our Warriors can take them down now!  Even though they're Dirkless, the Mavs still look competitive.

Predictions:

* Warriors by 3
* Stephen Jackson has 31 points (hitting four threes)
* Monta Ellis has 26 points
* Brandon Bass explodes for 23 points and 9 boards.  Another backup looks like Amare Stoudemire.
* The Warriors continue their streak this season of no back-2-back losses.

What are your predictions?  Any comments, thoughts, anxieties??? Post them in the comments as you follow the game live!

I am hoping for some Warriors gold!
What they really don't need is to give the Mavs some swagger.  This is a home game! And if we can pull off the next two against them we can split the season series.

This is a must win.  Lets give Dallas more reasons to worry.  To their breakdown, not ours!

why are we in need of a miracle?
I don't understand that at all..
The Dubs should come back and handle the Mavs... 111-103.
Barron goes 20/5/12
Giving a shout out to Mr. Mean, Purvis Short, J.B. Carrol, Bernard and of course, Mr. Bill King

i predict
we get off to our patented slow start, which doesnt end till halftime. we come out with haste, playing ruthlessly, and by the end of the 3rd or perhaps the start of the 4th, the game will be in our hands. baron will 1up himself from last night, as will jackson. monta will either have another off night or he will continue to amaze us all with his finesse, either way we come out with the win, 119-108.

tonights warrior killer will be jerry stackhouse. brandon bass will give him a run for that spot, though...

lets not forget
that the mavs havent beat a +.500 team since they got jason kidd. if anyone is in need of a miracle, its the mavs. undefeated against sub 500 teams, but winless against teams with a winning record. 'nuff said.

WE STILL BELIEVE!!!

It ain't over fellas...

If you're at the Roaracle tonight, look for me reppin GSoM!  I'll be bringing a sign - won't even be comparable to Tony's creations, but it'll get the message across.

Here's the way I see it - WE STILL OWN THE MAVS.

Things are going to turn around, starting 2NITE.

But I will be crying when I see Jerry Wackhouse get 20 points on us....

Yet, we we pull out the W, I'll be the first one yelling, "WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT BLOGS NOW WACKHOUSE!"

We still believe!!

Round 6 of the Octagon
Denver is now 1 1/2 games behind Utah. There's a tiny possibility that Denver can overtake Utah in their division, which would knock Utah down to the bottom spots of the West with us. I don't think that's likely because Denver has a back to back with Phoenix.

As for us, WE NEED THIS GAME! This is the most important game of the year. I hope Jackson's words last night fired up the team to show up.

# 1979 - Airey Neave, a British politician, is killed by a car bomb as he exits the Palace of Westminster. The Irish National Liberation Army claims responsibility.
# 1981 - President Ronald Reagan is shot in the chest outside a Washington, D.C., hotel by John Hinckley, Jr.
# 1982 - Space Shuttle program: STS-3 Mission completed with the landing of Columbia at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.
# 1997 - Five (channel) Begins broadcasting in the UK
# 2006 - Marcos Pontes is the first Brazilian astronaut in space.
# 2006 - UK Terrorism Act 2006 becomes law.
# 2008 - Golden State Warriors choke and lose to the gutless Dallas Mavericks without 20pt plus MVP Dirk Nowitzki AT HOME IN THE BIGGEST GAME OF THE YEAR, and subsequently miss the playoffs again, after breaking the 13 year long streak a year ago.  Interestingly, GSOMers ddnt take long to adjust as  everyone is used to missing the playoffs year after year after year.  In another story, Vonteego Cummings reverted back to his 13 year tradition of watching NBA playoff basketball motionless, with a mere nod of the head whenever someone makes a basket, or hoists a championship trophy.

murtiqua left this out...
(AP) Kenyan-Slovenian Drazevichius Mogadu is said to be declaring for the 08 NBA draft.  The 7'5 center from Bhutan (born there) is projected to be picked around the late first round, presumably to the Golden State Warriors.

GM Chris Mullin, in an ambush interview in Mill Valley last night (seen exiting BevMo, carrying suspicious packages in brown paper bags) said, in semi-slurred speech that he has been eyeing the 7'5 center like Michael Jackson eyes little kids in Chuckee Cheese.

"I could see Draz starting for us next year to address our height problems."  Added Mullin:  "Good thing that we missed the playoffs because of our losses to Denver and Dallas.  Now I have more time to look at prospects, to continue the Warrior tradition and my talent evaluation savvy with excellent draft picks in recent years like the svelte Patrick O' Bryant and the silky smooth Marco Bellineli."

Also according to Mullin, Coach Nelson has expressed that the weather in Maui is actually much better during playoff time than in June.  "Making the playoffs last year was a fluke.  Contrary to what everyone thinks, I hated it.  All it did was to f' up my vacation plans.  This is more like it."

Warriors should outshoot the Mavs
There's no doubt in my mind the Warriors have the Mavs number. Lately, Kidd has been drifting in and out of games and his turnovers can alarmingly creep up. When that happens, it's goodnight Big D. I'm looking for Baron to push it on these guys because I don't think they can keep up. I agree Stackhouse and Harris can get hot but Stack in particular often stays cold. A little razzle dazzle on the offensive end combined with some intimidating defense and you can notch a 'W' for GS.

have you all noticed
how quiet the crowd is.  Whats up with that.  I remember going to the Mavs game last year when they were on their 17 game winning streak, and the crowd was amazing.  Now we have a chance to catch the Mavs in one of the most important games of the season, and the crowd is nonexistent.

by Number22Drew on Mar 30, 2008 7:22 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it's because
it's not the same team we faced. Also, I think we already made our point to the Mavs by kicking them out of the playoffs last year.

I just realized that if we win both games against
Nugs and Mavs, but still end up in a 3-way tie, we would make it and Dallas would be the odd one out!

by racsan on Mar 30, 2008 9:27 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

We weren't going to lose this one
because I went to this one, for the first time in like 3-4 years. I just had a good feeling about it. This one was closer than it should have been, every single time the Warriors were about to pull away there were calls in the Mavs favor. Not saying the calls were one sided throughout the game, but the bad calls in my opinion were made at crucial times.

Azubuike manned up though and the Warriors won!

There was a massive wave in the upper bowl where I sat, I've never seen a wave like it.

by belilaugh on Mar 30, 2008 9:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Also,
I've decided the +/- stat is meaningless. Harrington was the only - Warrior at minus 6, but when we dug that little hole in the first he was the only one getting us out of it. So it's not a reflection of his importance in this game.

Tie Breaker
Can anyone tell me how the tie breakers work between the Warriors, Dallas and Denver? I know we have one more game against each but if we do end up tied with both how does it work?

by ghostridebaron on Mar 30, 2008 10:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Tiebreakers
2 team tie
  1. Head to head record
  2. Division Record (if in same div.)
  3. Conference Record
  4. ...
We have essentially clinched losing the tiebreakers to both Dallas and Denver, since we can only tie in head to head and lose conference record, as seen in the current standings.

3 team tie

  1. Best head to head record amongst teams tied.
  2. Best conference record
  3. ...
We lose unless we win both the remaining games against Mavs and Nugs.
That would yield these head to head records:
Nugs: 4-3
Warriors: 4-4
Mavs: 3-4

We would be the 8th seed and the Mavs the ones left out.

by R Dizzle on Mar 30, 2008 10:30 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

So...
I just got back to the game. First time at lower level. I've got to say that I don't know if it's just the Lower Level like some have stated in the past but the atmosphere felt dead. Considering the importance of this game in keeping us alive and the fact that last years playoffs against the Mavs was so electric I was pretty disappointed. We had three signs that we were shy to hold up very often because NO ONE was standing or cheering much.

However... being that close to the court is really something a man can get used to, though cup holders would have been much appreciated.

It was a decent game that felt pretty drama free as I always felt like we were comfortably in control even when were were only up five.

P.S. Did anyways see our posters? I had a Azubuike "Welcome to the Gun Show" poster and a Mavs 2008 9th place poster.

by GoldenStateGuerrero on Mar 30, 2008 10:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Comment about the crowd
Someone above mentioned the crowd at halftime. I think part of it is that the Mavs isn't the same team. They're not the 67 win team they were, so there's no feeling of "we're the underdogs and we're gonna take down the #1 team". Also, Dirk is injured, so he's not there to root against. Also, we proved our point to them last year. And I think you're right. There's no drama with the Mavs this year.

In addition, the Warriors haven't played that frenetic, out of control style as much lately. I think that has subdued the crowd overall. They're a bit more half court, slow it down, isolate and play one-on-one. That could be a by-product of the evolution of Monta, and the team offense has subconsciously evolved into a one-on-one offense.

by jlex77 on Mar 31, 2008 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I should have
been more careful to not make my comment sound like it was directed at you personally so I appologize for that.  We don't need any more 'incidents' here!

People hate the wave and things like it because it sends the message that people are more interested in themselves than the game, which is douchey.

Remember back in the "dark ages" about 10 years ago when the Warriors had some deal where if the team scored 100 points you could turn in your ticket for a free Taco?  The fans would cheer louder when GSW had 98 points than at any other time in the game and they would start making these gestures like they were crunching down on a taco...  And back then the team was probably already down 20 pts at that point.  Douchey...

Finally, I hoped that by using the word 'douchey' it was sort of implied that I wasn't taking it all that seriously...

nice win
they took care of business after that first bit of ugliness.
but jax needs to get over it.' cap' needs to keep his head in the game, quit lookin' for calls and leaving us exposed on 'd', man. i love and appreciate everything else about him, but damn, why does he get a pass on that? eliminate that self involved nonsense and then maybe dude is an all-star. he's still our money man, but why can't we keep all the rest and also get him to use his abundant intelligence and help the team by giving up that useless complaining while the play is still on?

did anyone catch that sweet floor level slo-mo replay of monta rising and rising on his jumper (3:00 left in second quarter)- that's what i'm talkin' about!

not that i watched the game- that would be a violation of my NBA boycott after the "fisher" fiasco...
