OPEN THREAD: Warriors @ Hawks - In Whose Club?

Warriors 36-22

Hawks (W-L): 24-33

Time: 4:00pm PST

TV: FSN Bay Area

Radio: KNBR 1050

When I think of Atlanta, I think of 3 things: Clubs, the song "Welcome to Atlanta" by Jermaine Dupri and Ludacris, and Usher. As you realize that I'm a byproduct of the MTV Generation (and I make no apologies for that), you might be asking, what the heck does this have to do with tonight's game?

Absolutely nothing! But the randomness that is me makes this preview all the more worthwhile. Despite the fact that many people out there are blowing this game off because these are two lower seed teams battling for playoff position, here are my top 3 reasons why this could potentially be as hot as Usher's new single:

Jump to find out:

Star-divide

1) Pushing to make the playoffs: Both teams are essentially in the same spot. Sitting at the very edge of the playoffs, these teams amusingly have completely opposite records. The Warriors have a 36 and 22 record, while the Hawks have a 24 and 33 record. If the Warriors were in the East they would be in forth, but I guess we’ve all heard that before. This game should be exciting because both teams will be playing hard knowing every single game counts from here on out.

2) Young and Exciting: I know I sound like a broken record but I get excited every time I watch our young guys play. Tonight we should see Monta dominate like he has lately with his high percentage shots and drives to the basket. We should also see the flourishing of Brandan Wright. In the past two games, he’s averaging 13 points and 7 rebounds with only 18 minutes of play. We are seeing the maturing process of this young star as he’s started both games while Beans is out nursing an injury.

Atlanta also has some high flying talent in Josh Smith, Al Horford, and Joe Johnson. I think this team is heavily underrated and will be a pretty darn good team in a couple of years. Both teams are run and gun so I expect a high scoring affair. And what’s not to love about that?

3) Great Quotes: ESPN reported:

"We're starting to realize we're playing for something," guard Stephen Jackson said after Sunday's 110-104 victory over Portland. "We want to get into these playoffs, and there's no question we're playing hard. We're just trying to get into position."

Geez thanks Stephen. I guess I didn’t really understand why I paid an exorbitant amount of money the past 3 months to watch you play. Next time I’ll ask the Warriors season ticket team to just sell me season tickets for the second half of the season now that we are on the same page.

No Predictions but YaoButta’s contest: Last game against the Hawks we lost on our home court! We better teach them a lesson this time. Tell me by how many points will we win tonight and the combined score of both teams.

Winners are tallied for end of season YaoButtaMing awards!

Even though I know you're kidding, that's a pretty lame comment.  Jack's been playing his butt off all season.  It's not always pretty, and he plays hurt a lot, but that shows what I mean.

oh please ...
where in my comment did I say anything about his lack in hussle or play? Can I not make a sarcastic remark against what he said? If it really takes till now to realize what we are playing for then YES i have a problem with the statement!

I agree...
...it's human nature to acclimate to the circumstances you live in. I don't think it's at all unnatural for Jackson or anybody else to be less motivated early in the year. It's obviously something that might rankle some fans, but it's not laziness, it's just the way people work.

Tonight's game!
Go W's--I say 6 point victory margin: 115-109 (total 224).

Nice inclusion of the new Usher/Jeezy track, too, it's fire!!

As for the Jackson quote, I care more about what he does than what he says. He's played with incredible heart this season, everyone knows that. To be honest, I think Jack may have been talking about other players in that quote and just used the "we" form to be diplomatic.

by Bucky on Mar 4, 2008 11:21 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed
My sarcasm probably came off more negative for you the readers then I wanted, however, I wish the Warriors had more intensity and killer instinct right off the bat because I think we'd be better off.
Sometimes we start the games sluggish and I think it's a mentality issue.

Not that I like Kobe, but one of the reasons he's an incredible player is that no matter where you are in the season, he plays like every single moment counts. We need more attitudes like that and I think our team can be amazing.

by YaoButtaMing on Mar 4, 2008 11:29 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Here's the rub...
You cannot play all out on both ends of the floor, at the pace we play, for the entirety of an 82 game season and then expect to have juice in the playoffs.

Truth is, this team has far exceeded expectations in terms of record. They conserve their energy for when it counts, and when it counts, they are killers. I think we have the most come from behind wins of over ten points than any team in the league. Far more.

Hoops is won in the last three minutes of the game (assuming the game is close) this teams goal in the regular season is to keep it close and win it when it in the last three minutes. Come playoff time they will play full court, man to man, pressure defense and leave it all out on the court. I can guarantee that. So we shouldn't give them a hard time about not going balls to the wall every minute when they are sitting some ten games over .500.

As long as they win games, I don't care how much they win by. Once they make it to the playoffs we should expect nothing less than all out effort, but until then you have to realize this games chess it ain't checkers! Let them do their thing in the regular season so when they get to the playoffs they have the legs and the stamina to play that lockdown defense we saw them pull on Dallas.

I can't wait! AND so many western conference teams are slipping I am almost giddy. Thanks Shaq!

by garin423 on Mar 4, 2008 2:18 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Here's the problem ...
The Lakers, Spurs, Suns, etc. play "all out" every single game. This is why they are top of the conference and why they will have home court advantage. If we think the Warriors have any chance in hell in the playoffs you better believe we need home court advantage. If you are worried about having "juice" left in the tank, then we should consider strengthening our bench instead of taking games less seriously.

It's great to have "come from behind" wins, but why put us in that position? If we can focus from the start of the game then we wouldn't have to keep Baron and the starters in during crunch time and give them time to relax and let the reserves close out games. That would then give us the ability to rest our starters for the next game and playoffs.

10 games over .500 is great. But we are 8th in the west and if we don't make the playoffs I'm going to be very upset. 8th is not acceptable. Denver is going to make a surge and I doubt any of the other teams will fall enough for us to surpass. The point is back to my original debate, if we had the killer instinct from the start, would we still be in 8th? why not 6th or possibly home court advantage in 4th?

I also love your optimism! But I'm still worried we might not make the playoffs which would then make this debate a moot point.

either way it's fun arguing about this =)

we win by 10 -- combined score 224
If I'm correct, we got swept by the ATL last year in addition to losing to them already once this year.   The dubs need to have a strong first quarter to have a chance in this game.  I say Monta goes for 30 pts and 8 rodmans, Baron comes out of his mini-slump and goes for 25 points and drops 12 dimes, and BWright goes for career high 15 points and gets 5 swats.

it's weird
In terms of possessions per game, they are one of the slower teams, but you would never know it from watching their games (non-Warriors games). I think they run selectively and they use a lot of the shot clock when they get into the half-court.

i said pietrus was playing badly and was receiving a lot of hate.. but now hes suddenly hitting his shots? what are you reading in my comments?

i've stated nothing but the truth?

by saintdee on Mar 4, 2008 6:28 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wow
calling pietrus unstoppable is bashing him now?

by saintdee on Mar 4, 2008 6:30 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i'm not talking
your "unstoppable" comment only. i'll admit i misread that but you've been beating the same drum all the time with your sarcastic comments. it gets redundant.

by jchao204 on Mar 4, 2008 6:36 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

saintdee's

You're
being a fool. Try to actually understand what his comments are stating. Stop trying to instigate.

by sunghan on Mar 4, 2008 6:30 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

lol.
i'm not instigating anything.

i've read his comments and all i got from it was him making fun of pietrus everytime he made a play.

take a look in the mirror before you use the word "instigate" bro.

by jchao204 on Mar 4, 2008 6:33 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you're using the comment where i said hes unstoppable to make your point about me bashing him all the time even though i clearly just complimented him.

by saintdee on Mar 4, 2008 6:36 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wow
and i thought i was the one having trouble reading comments?

i'm using all your comments in this thread about pietrus to make my point.

i admit reading your "unstoppable" comment wrong. but the rest were just plain annoying.

by Dubmanny on Mar 4, 2008 6:40 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i didnt realize
that live commentary required expert analytical skills....or maybe you should just enjoy the win and stop trying to turn this into a big deal.

Anyways am I as a fan not allowed to be frustrated with Pietrus' play? am I not allowed to comment it in a quick post to vent my frustration? Do I have to praise him when he misses? just like when I exalt him when he hits his shots?

by saintdee on Mar 4, 2008 6:48 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

dont worry bro
i get frustrated when he's on the floor. i garuantee that if his turnovers would have cost there would be another diary on his clumsy a$$.

pietrus still makes bonehead plays but he isnt dunleavy, thats for sure... but MP's the only bandwagon im gonna stay away from since he stated that he would be an "all-star" else where.

win or lose... playoffs or lottery... i gotta luv them dubz! GSW 4 Life!!!

You have been a buzzkill for months, man
Constantly nitpicking every little thing Pietrus does. All the time. Every game log. It's never been funny and it is tiring to read. Pus, the guy was playing 7 minutes a game. Word of advice, Saintdee, being ignorant and negative is a deadly combination. It is an open forum, but still I think I speak for many when I say

...it would be cooler if you went away.

by Dubmanny on Mar 4, 2008 8:12 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hm?
i think i speak for many when I say

See I can do it too. ::rolls eyes::

gee whiz.. if you want me to stop posting why don't you ask everyone who disagrees with you on your dairy http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/story/2008/2/27/183729/693
to stop posting as well? Since apparently you decided singehandedly that criticizing Pietrus warrants a instant removal from the website. And ironically you chose one of the posts in which I was praising him to do it in.

Btw you are far more negative than I will ever be.. read your dairy again.. just read it.. and see what kind of tone it carries with it.

reminded me a lot of our playoff run last year with Barnes and MP contributing. This year we've been getting by without them because Monta is going bonkers but we could be a very dangerous team if Barnes and MP pick it up like they did tonight

Wow
18 for Baron in the first, 18 for Jack in the third, 18 for Pietrus in the 4th, and a quiet 20 for Monta. That is unbelievable.

This is the Pietrus that I loved last season, the confident, goofy attitude and the corner three. Barnes, though he still is not great at making layups, hit both his threes today so that is a good sign.

So right now,  with Pietrus and Barnes slowly rounding into form (well, Barnes slowly rounding into form, Pietrus already looks like he's there) the Warriors are a lethal team.

The rest of the league should be very, very afraid.

I love this.
Pietrus strings together 3 decent games, DECENT MIND YOU BECAUSE HES FINALLY DOING WHAT HES PUT IN THERE TO DO... And all these bandwagon queers that hated him before are all on his jock like he still isnt a scrub. Seriously, if you are sitting here jocking him, you need to just sit down. You were hating him before. You don't get to decide when it's fashionable not to.

THIS JUST IN: PIET IS STILL A SCRUB. THANKS.

Don Nelson = 1200+ NBA cpoaching wins
Gee, I wonder why he plays Pietrius so much? This just in: Don Nelson knows what he's doing. What's really typical is armchair coaches on fan sites second-guessing Hall-of-Fame coaches.

by Dubmanny on Mar 4, 2008 8:56 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sike
Or more prevalent seems to be retards like you sitting here acting like Pietrus is the second coming after his 3rd decent game in a row. I wonder why more people agree that this is a fluke than don't? Probably because other people aren't slow like you.

by xcoma on Mar 4, 2008 9:35 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, you're right
we should hate on Pietrus when he does well, otherwise we're not true fans.

Pietrus is playing well because he's doing what we've wanted him to do the entire year. He still makes the same mistakes he's been making for a long time (stepping out of bounds, shooting with 22 on the clock late in the fourth of a close game), but he is finally starting to hit the corner threes, finally providing the spark from the bench that we've not had for most of the season.

I'll live with stupid Pietrus plays if he makes up for them on the offensive end, and he has done so the past couple of games, so why should we act like he's playing bad when he's not?

by belilaugh on Mar 4, 2008 9:59 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

just
ignore him... I just realized he is purposely baiting people into arguments.. see earlier comments in which he and some other poster turned my praise of Pietrus into one giant argument.

i admit i make stupid comments sometimes.. but geebus you took my post in your dairy as a personal slight against you. Maybe I did come off as harsh but you made that dairy with so much anger that it made me angry when i read it. You need to seriously chill out. At the end of the day, the warrior front office doesn't care about what we talk about and my comments only affect you if you want it to affect you.. they aren't targeted for you to read and are only an expression of my feelings at that time. No need to get your undies in a bunch.

Once again... CHILL!! Warriors won.. be happy..

he'd be wearing a sportcoat and siting on the end of the bench with Belinelli, Kosta and POB. Hate all you want, but he's a rotation player on a playoff team.

And who said second coming? Damn, your reading comprehension skills are pretty poor. Dude has a few nice games and you haters havto make a point of how bad he is.

Hall of Fame coach gives the dude some burn, he pulls a double-double and starts draining threes and playing good d and you act like he offended you or stole your girlfriend or something.

I don't even think he's that great but you guys who  spend all your energy hating the dude are straight ignorant.

i don't post much
so it'd be hard to judge whether i was a pietrus hater or not. but i will say this. Pietrus's first game he came in all fire and energy, drew a charge from Jason Kidd, made a few shots and then sprained his ankle.

besides adding a three point shot, nothing much has changed.

by dso on Mar 5, 2008 12:13 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he's the same player
and sure to leave this offseason, but his recent performance shows how valuable another good wing would be to this team.  If the warriors could pick up an athletic swingman in the draft or in the bargain bin in FA with the shooting touch to spread the D with 3's and the athleticism to rebound and run the floor, it would be a huge boost to this team.

Some people think Azuibuke will be this player, and while I don't disagree with them, I'm not sure if he's explosive enough and good enough on the glass and on defense to really fit this teams needs.  He might be better on a half-court team that relies on its stars to carry the load and its roll players to focus on just 1-2 things.

Pietrus is like any other NBA player
in that he needs to play within his limits. Just like Baron needs to not shoot threes, Pietrus needs to stop doing what he sucks at and do what he does best.

There is no reason why he can't be the next Bruce Bowen, a defensive FORCE at sg/sf that can gaurd 1-3, occasionally 4. It's just his focus is all on being an offensive weapon when in reality his offensive game is weak and probably will never improve beyond what he has now.

he needs to focus on his defense because he can be just as good of a defender as stephen jackson. plus he can board, draw charges, finish the fast break and hit the corner three. if bruce bowen can make a name for himself with the limited skill set he has, there's no reason why pietrus can't.
