RECAP: Warriors 105, Nuggets 114 - Not Easy Being a Warriors Fan

Final Boxscore | Open Thread (885+ comments)

This is probably the hardest recap I've ever had to write. I'm just sitting here staring at the boxscore trying to figure out what to write. We all share the same pain. We all recognize that the Warriors need to win their next 3 and Denver go 1-2 for the Warriors to make the playoffs. Some of us hold out hope, some of us would rather give up and be surprised if it happens. I'm not ready to give up on this season. Like they say, it ain't over till it's over.

I got 2 big reasons for the loss and then we'll take a shower and cleanse ourselves of the Denver Chicken Nuggets.

Jump.

Star-divide

Reason #1 for the loss: Denver's Zone D
One team played D tonight and they won. Simple as that. George Karl made a couple excellent adjustments tonight. First, he didn't let Anthony Carter play too many minutes and instead let JR Smith stay in the game. This team doesn't need a point guard. Second, after Denver got scorched in the first quarter playing man defense, he switched to the 1-2-2 zone.

What a difference a D makes. Denver couldn't stop the Warriors at all in the first quarter. The Dubs had 17 fast break points as Denver's transition D was awful. Starting in the 2nd quarter, Denver put a stop to that. Their zone D disrupted the Warriors offense. Although the Warriors still got 21 fast break points the rest of the way, playing in the zone allowed Denver to get back on D. They didn't have to find their man, they just ran to their spot.

What the zone also did was extend the Warriors offense. Instead of going one on one and getting high screen and rolls, the Warriors decided to settle for swinging the ball around the perimeter and drive and kicks. AI looked very quick out there as he played the passing lanes well as he always does. Najera gave the guards trouble out there and JR Smith played solid D too. Those 3 perimeter guys closed out well on the guards and forced any driving guards into the teeth of the defense.

It was frustrating to watch the Warriors not figure out how to solve the riddle. Everytime they drove baseline, there was Melo, Camby or Kmart cutting off the baseline and trapping. Everytime they drove the middle of the lane, there were two defenders there and the perimeter D could cheat and get in the passing lanes for steals. Usually the only option left was the swing pass across the court or kicking it back out. It left the Warriors offense forcing up shots (not that there's anything new with that) but doing it completely out of the flow of the offense.

Did Nellie Get Outcoached?
This is one question I've been pondering since the game ended. Karl made his adjustment - switching from man D to zone and pulling Anthony Carter. Nellie's team didn't really seem to make any adjustments. They struggled against the zone D for 3 full quarters and didn't change up their offense. Usually against a zone D, you overload one side or you get the ball to a good passer in the middle of the zone. Neither of those happened tonight. The screens stopped coming while the turnovers mounted. Leads me to believe Karl outcoached Nellie. What do you think?

Anyways, props to the Nuggets for adjusting so well after what looked like a disastrous beginning.

Reason #2 for the loss: No Bench
Hello? Did anyone else dress for the game except Baron, Monta, Al, Andris, and Jack? Did anyone else hear Nellie's pregame speech? Did anyone else realize this was the biggest game of the year? Hello? Anyone?

Ugh. Let's count up the bench points. On my left hand: thumb, pointer finger, middle finger, ring finger, pinky. On my right hand: thumb, pointer finger. Okay done. 7 points off the bench! Seven! And Kelenna's 5 came with under 5 minutes in the 4th quarter. So the bench had all of Matt Barnes' 2 points in 43 minutes.

Where was Pietrus tonight? He had such an explosive 4th quarter against the Kings that I was expecting him to show up. To be fair, he played a few good possessions on D against Carmelo. After Melo was lighting up Jax at the start of the 3rd, Pietrus' D was what got him off his rhythm. But other than that, he was MIA. 3 fouls, 0 points, 0 rebounds. Nellie pulled him quickly too.

Here's one question, did Nellie not trust his bench tonight or did he just not use them because they didn't produce? I think it was the latter. Monta played the entire game. Baron played 46 minutes, Andris 40, Jax 43 and Al 33. I guess Nellie decided to live and die by his starters.

Enough
I could go on and on about more reasons for the loss. I could also pour more salt in our wounds. But really, it wasn't all bad for the Warriors. Baron ended with a triple double as he played one of his best games of the past few months. Monta had another excellent scoring night, though his 6 turnovers and missed free throws were costly. Al came to play but needed to hit the boards harder. Biedrins was big tonight with 19 boards. And Jax? Well we learned that after he takes his headband off he plays better. Fact is, Melo, AI, and JR Smith played lights out while our starters got sloppy (missed free throws and uncharacteristic turnovers), possibly because they were playing tons of minutes with no help from the bench.

Looking Ahead
It ain't over yet. Denver has two tough games ahead of them. One at Utah and one at home against Houston. They close out with Memphis. If we get some help from Utah and Houston, we have a chance. That would mean we'd have to beat the Clippers (not easy with Brand back), beat Phoenix in Phoenix (tough tough game), and then finish Seattle off on the last game of the season. Let's hope the Seattle game is like our Portland game last year, win and we're in.

Don't Give Up
Look, it's easy to give up right now and say it's over. Just like it would have been real easy during our playoff drought to give up and be a Kings fan. But we didn't. We're true Warriors fans. We believe in our team until the very last day no matter what. You didn't give up hope when we stunk for years and years and years. You can hold out hope for one more week. The odds are stacked against us. We're a long shot to make the playoffs. Nobody expects us to get there now. It's easy to give up now, and damn hard to be a Warrior fan.

Andris Biedrins
I gotta say he had the best game of the bunch. I could have given this to Baron but the 9-25 and 1-9 from 3 was a killer. Biedrins was all over the place tonight hauling in 19 rebounds along with scoring 11 points. He kept the Warriors in this game tonight not so much with his scoring but his heart and hustle. When the team needed a defensive rebound, he seemed to be the guy getting it. Sometimes it seems like he's the only one fighting for rebounds - 4 blue jerseys and Biedrins in the paint. He even played tough in the paint. He challenged shots, changed shots and got a couple blocks. That's usually something you don't see from him. He had one of the best games of the year at the right time.

did you see Beens off the dribble?!
Biedrins had the ball at the top of the key and no one was able to get open... what started as a "I'm gonna dribble until I can pass this rock" morphed into a "I think I'm gonna go towards the basket!" moment.

I jumped outta my chair and shouted "TAKE IT TO THE RIM BEENS!" right in the middle of the office (was watching the game through the internet)... he ended up passing it off to the left side, but only after a sweet cross over and a good 5-6 feet towards the basket.

That's a true Warrior right there. With no help, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Definitely the Warrior Wonder - he's been on fire lately.

Good job, Fantasy Junkie
Tonight was hard, but after years of nothing, it's not too hard to stomach. JR Smith and Allen Iverson had a great game. I would say Beans and AL had a decent game as well.

Till Saturday, Go Dubz1

there were
there were SOOOO MANY REASONS why the Warriors lost tonight. You hit on a few points, but I feel that the turn overs, and not making key free throws also hurt their chances.

PLUS, is it just me or do you guys feel that Nelson pulls and subs in at the worst times? What a frustrating loss.

Anyhow, it has been one heck of a season with 3 more games to go. I'm just going to sit back and enjoy what's left of it. We may be able to pull off a 3-0

If we get into the playoffs, SUPER.
If we don't get into the playoffs, I'm ok with that, too.

Great Recap
most do not understand how hard it is to write a recap especially after a loss of this magnitude. I'm distraught right now, but at least i didn't have to put it in writing.

Thanks FJ!

Great Job Fantasy!
I want to thank you and the entire GSOM Community for all the time and dedication devoted with this site. It really is a speacil community.
I really do love and enjoy all the passion on this site.

I was at the game, and I screamed my lungs out, and stood up the entire game.  I didn't care what anyone was telling me or saying, I let it all hang out tonight and surprisingly I felt the Warriors did too.  The Nuggets shot lights out today, that stretch where Melo was torching us was incredible.  Jackson had his hand on melo's Face and nose and he still made it.

The game felt forced to me, once the second quarter began.  The Warriors weren't playing smart, they were playing desperate.  It felt like we shot as many as the Nuggets did, but they just made more than we did.

I think we owe it to the Warriors to give them 82 games before we make judgements about the team.  Lets try to enjoy the rest of the season, and remember what a hell of a ride its been these past 2 seasons.

Much love y'all

47 wins
and counting.

if someone asked you if you would take that number at the beginning of the season, what would you have said?

and after they went 1-6 without Stack, what would you have said to 47 wins then?

this loss and the Dallas loss were brutal, no getting around it, I won't sleep well tonight, but this team was trying to beat last season's run without JRich, and without Stack for 7 games. they got the wins, and it was a really fun ride. maybe they get in, though really, with 1-3 records against  Dallas and Denver, they don't deserve it.

either way, sometimes the playoffs aren't the whole picture.

just trying to talk myself through it. ugh, just like the clips 2 years ago. tough to take.

Thanks
for writing the recap FJ. It pains me that for the past week or two , we have been losing to good teams and winning against sucky teams. It just feels different. Til sat/sun my hope is not very strong coz the dubz aren't playing well to win crucial games(otherwise i will still be in We believe mode)

Oh wait! I forgot to say one thing
Tomorrow is STEPHEN JACKSON DAY! (sarcasm)
The unveiling for the new court is scheduled for April, and the mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, is declaring April 12th, Stephen Jackson Day in the city of San Francisco.

i would just like to say, make the playoffs or not this year has been great (and will be through the seattle game). this is the first time in years that i had expectations for the warriors going into the year. well, expectations besides playing a brand of basketball i could at least muster watching. tough loss tonight but i still believe they can pull it out. W's '08 playoff push!!! Lets go!!

side not:(imagine if they had won only half of the opening six jax was out? we wouldn't even be having this discussion.)

tnx FJ 4 recap
it's 10 AM now in Riga

i had about 70 sleepless nights this season and i will have 3 more

i can't say this is most frustrating game 4 me -i m just burned out a bit -after last loss to LAL after last loss to DAL after previous loss to DEN .....

i m not ruined -i was a bit after 0-6 and that's a long time ago -i m tired almost as SJax

so

3 options left

  1. WIN
  2. DIE
  3. DIE WITH HONOR
first can be last but second isn't Warriors way

so
i hope warriors has strength and selfesteem enough
and i hope God has mercy

that missing this years playoffs wont be another 13 years of misery.  We got lucky this year because Baron played the whole season, what are the chances the same thing happens next year.

I need to sleep...Im taking this sooooo bad.

But
could it possibly be better if he got injured?

There were plenty of games that he coasted in as the Warriors went down double digits in the middle of the year. Then he had to expend energy to get them back into that game, and combined with the energy he  expended against the good teams, he was clearly worn out by the end. Last year he was injured, but he came back for the stretch run and had fresh legs.

Obviously we would have to find a way to win some games without him in the middle of the year, but his absence would allow a bench player to get significant game experience.

Great year
Although I don't believe this season is over (we definitely can win out and denver is due for a let down with houston and they have no chance in utah) I thought this was a hell of a year. For the first time in a long time I've expected the warriors to win, and they did! No one plays a more exciting brand of basketball in the league. We have had more breathtaking moments in this one season than most teams have in 5 and I wouldn't trade that for anything. This is just the beginning for us. Most teams like dallas and phoenix have mortgaged their futures for this one season, while teams like san antonio are just getting old, period. We have some of the most talented youngsters in the game with monta, beans, bwright and buike. We will have many years of 50+ wins to come. So I see this season as a way to let all these other teams looking for that one last chance at the chip kill each other, while we sit back and own the next 8 or 9 years. Go dubs!

by rush735 on Apr 11, 2008 2:18 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Actualy
I think our future doesn't look so bright as you see it.

We are a flawed team that plays the type of b-ball that is based on jumpshots without any inside games.

So next year when Blazers get scary and Kings and Clips won't be that bad, I predict at least 10 wins less than this year and of course no playoffs.

The smart thing to do would be to trade half a team for a "different maker" type of player, or go young with Smart as coach(which if Nellie don't come back-big doubt!)and then in couple of years with the core of AB,Monta,Wright,Belli,...go for gold.

by buky on Apr 11, 2008 3:50 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Trade who?
I agree that you ned to have AB and Monta, Write looks good and Marco might turn into an actual player, but who do you trade?
Davis and Jackson are key for this team.  When they look for a leader Monta isn't the one with the ball in his hands.
Harrington looks to be the one peice that you could trade away.  His play has affected the outcome both ways.  When he is on, the Warriors roll, when he is off they struggle.
I am not saying to trade Al, but I would love to see the W's get someone who can help them break down a Zone and break up the scoreless runs of 3 minutes or more.

our only hope, but man.....isnt 15 years enough to think about the future? the future is now damn it, i don want no more drougs, no more 5, 6, 7 years without entering the playoffs, we have to make some adjustments.......and thats an order (always like that Sgt Slaughter cuote!)

Our team inconsistencies
have caught up with us over the past month or so. The pressures of making the playoffs while playing against the top teams have strained the trust the Warriors have with each other in their game. I sensed doubt and uncertainty in our team last night, something I didn't sense during last year's run. The Warriors knew what they needed to do, but they weren't sure how to do it as a team.

I believe the Warriors can go 3-0 to close out the season and I will choose Lat We N Trash's third option: Die with honor. I really doubt we'll make the playoffs, since it's all in Denver's hands now.

But the lessons learned: We need a more consistent bench. We need to develop a consistency in our team offense. And bring back the swarming, pestering, pressuring defense! If Nellie's going to play small ball, I think this is the best style of defense we got. It's energy draining, which is where the bench comes in, but it's better than no defense.

Heartbreaking
But I'm very proud of this team, they were Warriors in the true sense of the word all year long.  Maybe they win out (50 would be awesome), maybe they don't, and yes changes should be made, but for now, I'm just greatful for this fantastic season.  Props to the Nuggets, and props to the whole Western Conference for a year unlike any other.

Go Warriors!

maaaaaaaan
i was convinced after the first quarter that this was gonna be a blow out!. The zone defense was the x-factor but the legs were too tired..... Nelly's resiliency to use bench consistantly came to bite our back. Our bench did nothing, Denver won this game thru their bench. Najera=warrior killer!. Lets wait till sunday, since we don't control our own destiny.... THIS IS SAD but u know what i am proud to be a warrior fan coz this year and last year we are in the playoff conversation right till the end of the season!

I'm kinda disappointed that even tho we are having the best season in 14 years, we have finished this season so weak. 9 losses out of the last 16 isn't good enough. BUT i haven't given up hope yet!...

It's not over yet!
I still believe.   Utah has 3 losses at home all year, so I'm liking a Denver loss there.  The big game is the Houston game.  Friggin' Rockets, prove your 22-game win streak wasn't a fluke!!!  The good part is that 1) it's a back to back for them, and 2) the Rockets game is Sunday, so we'll know exactly what our odds are going into Monday's Suns game.

I'm gonna disagree with Fantasy Junkie on the bench.  I think Nellie had them on too short of a leash.  He didn't even use Buke at all until late in the game.  He also didn't use Croshere, who could have calmed us down a little.  He went to Barnes in desperation time (that's too much pressure for him).  Same with Pietrus.  I think our bench has proved that they'll produce, but you have to go to them early and have some faith in them.

For the first quarter, we saw our man-to-man defense again!!!  The one that we had going last year in the playoffs.  It was beautiful.  It was pesky, intense, switching and hardworking!  We were forcing turnovers and running.  Then when things got tough, we switched back to the zone.  Can't really fault that, but I just hope Nellie recognizes that the zone isn't something that we go to for the whole game.  We should use it like George Karl used it yesterday, as a change of pace to ruin the other team's rhythm.  Our man-to-man is too good to ignore.

Elation to Heartbreak
I ran a gamut of emotions watching the game last night. The entire day at work I was thinking about how I was going to leave early to catch the 5PM start. I didn't get anything done at work the whole day. I ran out the door and raced home and flipped the television on to TNTHD (can't watch the game in anything less than HD now). During pre-game I was so amped that I couldn't sit still. I was annoyed by Barkley and his constantly saying "First of all..." and his pointless analysis. Once the tip finally came around which seemed like forever. Once the Warriors built up their big lead, I was ecstatic! I was ready to call the GSW-HOOP and place my order for playoff tickets. But in the back of my mind, I had this feeling that things weren't going to turn out well. Iverson and Anthony aren't going to give up without a fight. By half time the lead was gone. The zone defense totally killed the Warriors offense and their defense crumbled too boot. I suddenly became very desperate. At half time I ate my dinner because I knew if they lost, I wasn't going to be able to eat. The rest of the game was just what I had hoped wouldn't happen. The Warriors looked tired and the zone continued to stymie them. There was no energy off the bench. In fact, there was no bench at all. I literally started pulling my hair out. The Warriors tried their best but it wasn't enough. And after the game I was so depressed I couldn't sleep.

In retrospect, I have to thank the Warriors for another great season. I know it's still not over but the Warriors don't hold their own destiny now. It's up to the Rockets and Jazz. I believe in my Warriors but I don't believe in the Rockets or Jazz. So once again, thank you Warriors for a great season. Thank you Warriors fans for screaming your lungs out. Finish the season like true Warriors and fight for every possession and every point and get these last 3 win. Who knows, their might be a miracle coming this season and I will be watching each of these last 3 games.

Even though it's not over, I think it's time for me to say something that I have been thinking about all season long. I MISS JASON RICHARDSON! I'm not saying that without Richardson the Warriors can't make the playoffs but he was the energy player that I think we sorely missed this season. And trading him away might have been a good decision long term but what did we get for him? A rookie with great potential but whom Nelson gives very little playing time. Trading Richardson made our team and our bench thinner. I love Richardson. He energized the team and the crowd with his 3 point shooting and more importantly his amazing, high flying dunks. He was with the Warriors during all the losing and once the Warriors started winning, Mullin ships him off to one of the worst teams in the East. I won't argue that it made good basketball sense to trade him. He had a huge contract and with Jackson and Ellis, there wasn't much room for him here. His leaving allowed Ellis to become the player that he is now and the All-Star that everyone now expects him to be. I just can't help but think that if we still had Richardson, last night's game would have turned out differently.

After the game, the Lakers and Clippers game started. I was still in shock from the Warriors loss but I couldn't help but notice Elton Brand. He did not look like someone who just came back from a ruptured Achilles. He looked like the old Elton Brand. And I couldn't help but wonder, why is he playing? The Clippers are out of the playoff race. He has nothing to gain from playing these last few games. And then I remembered that he has the option to opt out of the last year of his contract and become a free agent. The only reason I could think of from him to play would be to demonstrate to the league that he can play after the injury just as well as he did before it. Now if the Warriors were to somehow manage to get Brand (this will be very tough to do), don't you think our team would improve and go from a team that has a chance to make the playoffs to a team that has a chance to win a title? Imagine the starting line up. Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson, Elton Brand, and Andris Beidrins. All 5 of those guys have All-Star potential. Sub out Andris and put in Harrington when teams like the Nuggets play zone against them and drop the ball into Brand in the middle with his back to the basket. They will have to respect him and double team. Then the Warriors will have 4 shooters on the floor. We won't end up seeing what we saw last night.

The Warriors need a low post threat if they want to be championship contending team. Look at the teams that have won championships. The early Celtics had Bill Russell. The 80's Lakers had Kareem. The Rockers had Hakeem. The 90s-Early 2000 Lakers had Shaq. The Spurs have Duncan. Nearly every team that has won the title has had a dominant big man with the exception of Jordan's Bulls but it's Michael Jordan. :) I know the Warriors were trying to make a play for Kevin Garnett last off season and he would have been a great addition but would have cost the Warriors Monta and Beidrins plus a whole lot more and Mullin wasn't willing to do it and I don't blame him for not doing it. But the fact remains that the Warriors need a big man impact player. A defensive rebounder would be nice but I think they still need a low post threat.

Mullin, if you're reading this, I'm available to come work in the front office.

GO WARRIORS!!! Finish the season with pride and playoffs or not, THANK YOU!

Man...
I swear if Utah and Houston can pull out back to back wins...This would be close to how last year ended...(With the Dubs having to win the last game to get in.)...

Imagine the pressure (again) on Monday having to go into Phoenix to get a win if Utah and Houston do thier part...(This year is different in that they play better on the road.)

I think Jim Barnett said something along the lines that the Dubs odds of getting in right now might be 10-1...

This could happen...at least we'll know by Sunday if there's a chance...

stick a fork in us
Dats it,
I really wanted to post the "stick a fork in us, we are done" comment when we lost to New Orleans in such a disgusting fashion, but I clutched my "We Believe" shirt for a few more days.  Now it is done.

This is what happens when you have no bench for the whole entire year, your bread and butter starters get winded, get soft legs, flat jump shots, shotty defense.  No more quick hands like last year, no more doubling the post and stripping the ball.

Can we sign beans and monta?  Can we please draft Dorsey, or trade up to get him? We do still have that 10 mil trade exception through the draft.

We need to drop dead weight and sign some players.  Barnes, kosta, POB, are out.  We need a dedicated defensive stopper in the mold of Raja Bell, and a young wet eared banger in the mold of Glen "big baby" Davis.

Mully is going to have to prove his worth this off season.

Much Props
I know it must've been tough to write this recap because it was tough for me just to read about it or see the headlines on my yahoo page.

I was at the game last night and it was pretty sad to see so many fans leaving with a minute left when the dubs were down by 8 or 9. I can't stand these fairweather fans who give up early.

You're right tho. It ain't over til it's over and I'm not thinking about next season until we're officially out.

I still believe.

hold the phone...
Utah is nearly untouchable at home.

Houston is the back end of a back-to-back for Denver.

Denver has losing records against both of these teams.

Denver has lost to Sacramento and seattle in the past week.

Utah and Houston are both jockeying for playoff spots.

Season is not over.

I'm trying to get over last night's heartbreaker so I tried thinking of a few postives we could pull out of this seasn. I'm not saying that it's over but our chances are slim. My first thought when I woke up this morning was that, even though we might not make the Playoffs, we have 47 wins! That's a few more than I thought we'd end up with. And the fact that we're even talking about the Playoffs is a huge turnaround from a few years ago. Another thing is (and I could be wrong on this one) if we don't make the playoffs, ticket prices won't go up for next year right? Someone correct me. And last but not least, our future looks really bright with all the young potential we have lead by Monta of course. Hey Mully... keep Monta, B-Wright, & Belinelli. It's not over til it's over.

Not Sure if this has been said already but...
I stayed up to watch the clippers/lakers last night. mostly because of the fact that I was in shocked and couldn't bring myself to get up from the couch. (and   there was still a little hope that they would show my "we hungry" sign...)
Anyways, they aired a postgame Nellie interview either at the halftime of the clips/fakers  or o after the game.
One of the questions asked was:
"Your record is better, but do you think that you guys are a better team this year?"
Nellie's Response:
No... We are not a better team this year. We were better last year, regardless of what our record is..  We really miss JR. We dont have a guy who can go in and take over a game and put in 30 pts for us. He was that type of player etc.... etc...

Pretty Much Nellie saying I wanted JRich all along. We shot horribly in the clutch and thats something did pretty well.

Just thought I'd share that for those of you who missed it.

by FriscoJoe on Apr 11, 2008 10:08 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

wait what?
Are you sure you didn't fall asleep during the blowout and had a dream where Nellie said that?

Am I Michael Scott? I don't know. I might just be a basketball machine.

by disguy on Apr 11, 2008 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No
I'm serious. He really said it. He misses JRich. I knew most everyone else had turned off TNT, so I thought I would let everyone know... It makes me wonder what his original reaction was to the trade when it went down. Think He's got beef with Mully? lol

by FriscoJoe on Apr 11, 2008 10:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Weird
Is there a way to see this interview? Sorry man, I'm just having a hard time believing it hah.

Jrich didn't even average 20 pts last year. It doesn't make sense that Nellie would be saying Jrich's '30pts' is what we're missing.

Am I Michael Scott? I don't know. I might just be a basketball machine.

by disguy on Apr 11, 2008 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't believe me either...
Neely said that he misses someone that had the ability to put in 30 a game and take the game over. (I think Baron does)
Remember that JRich missed a lot of gmaes last year so his numbers were down...
He is back averaging over 20 ppg in Charlotte and shooting over 40% from beyond the arc...
I suspect that Nelly was just frustrated at our streaky shooting which has been cold lately...

Oh well, someone just introduce B Wright to Victor Conte, and maybe in 2-3 years I won't miss JRich so much either.

by FriscoJoe on Apr 11, 2008 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I heard it on KNBR
this morning during the Murph and Mac show...

Also when he said 30 pts, I pretty much assume Nellie knows JR is capable of scoring 30 pts in any given night...or 40.

Don't Give up Hope From a Friend in Houston
As a friend of the Warriors, because I love the bay area, the warriors style of play, and especially cause of their dismantling of our rivals the mavs last year.

I want to say that i believe the Houston Rockets will still play hard against Denver.

first time comment
I love this site and appreciate the blend of passion for the warriors, intelligence by the posters, and respect given during discourse. I've read it for a while and after attending last night's game decided to finally add my two cents.
First, I will always love the warriors no matter what.  Second, while i am sad about the loss I am not disheartened.
From what I saw, the biggest reason we lost was that we were tight and Denver played loose.  18 turnovers, missed layups and freethrows (al's almost airball - eeek), lots of shots that hit the front of the rim.  I don't agree that tired legs was as big a reason as the press says. Obviously, last year we had nothing to lose and played with reckless abandon, this year maybe the pressure got to us.
Unlike media and some on this site - I'm not blaming any one or two guys for this loss.  It was truly a team loss - and that includes some of Nelson's choices.
They were great fun to watch this season and I hope they improve the roster for next year. I'd like to see MP, MB and maybe Al moved for an athletic bruiser down low - but am not convinced the team as it is compromised can't improve as well. Next year we may have an allstar in Monte, we may see Wright really blossom and AB continue to improve - or we may not. Either way I'll always watch, always love them, and now, I'll try to contribute my insights to this on line community. Go Dubs!

I hate to say this now but I wish we could have jack for those first seven games. I know we would have at least gotten two more games from those six losses. Wow what could have been. Like always the dubs start off cold and finish strong. Let's see if we can close out these last three games even if we don't make the playoffs. I go to UofA and I'm still gonna make the trip up to PHX on Monday. I hate suns fans I hope I don't get into a fight LOL.

Every team lost to a bad team, multiple times.  It all evens out...somewhat.

Games 1,2,3 we were easily beat...no contest.  It was game 4,5,6 that killed us...Cavs, Mavs, Pistons.  From what I remember...we had the lead in the 4th but...we let Lebron, Dirk, and Rasheed take over towards the end of the game.  Do you remember?

It's sad BUT
they played with heart until the very end.  I appreciated that.

I was at the game, I saw the energy shift from playoff intensity in the beginning to silence after the lead was gone.  It was rough, it was emotional, but here we are.

Honestly, I think the the turning point happened in the 2nd quarter after the Junior Jam Squad came on the court after a Denver timeout.  Melo was on the bench resting at the time, so when he got up to let the players sit, he walked away from the huddle and started watchin the kids.  I noticed he was getting hella into it and I said to my buddy, "Yo man, look over at Melo.  He loves the way the kids are movin it on the court!  I hope this doesnt give the energy to lead them out of the deficit."

Well damn...

I got nothin but love the Junior Jam Squad though - I wish I had those kind of moves!

I stayed until the very end and I watched Baron, Jack, Monta, and the others play until the last shot.  They knew that it was over, but in my opinion, they didn't stop.  That made it a bit better for me.

It's not over, but its highly unlikely.

We still believe!!

If our destiny is the lottery...
What do you guys think about Hibbert?  7-2 Center from Georgetown.  Can shoot outside jumpers, hook shots, and college 3 pointers as well.  Check out youtube...Roy Hibbert...if you haven't seen him play.

No doubt...The Suns will lead the way for the end of small ball if they make it to the championship!

game notes...
I'm not sure if I am the only one that was not devastated by last night's game. For some reason it was one of those games that I'm OK with the result. Don't get me wrong I was pissed with their play during the game but in the end - we put ourselves in a great position, had a game at home, and didn't really have a lot of bad calls go against us. In the end we have no-one to blame but ourselves for not making the playoffs. There is something comforting in that.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.

layups
The thing that killed me was all the wide-open layups that didn't go down last night.  Almost as many as the wide-open 6-foot jumpers that clanged off the rim.

Not only did the missing points really hurt, it seemed like the squad got really demoralized when the easy shots did not go down, and that demoralization extended several Denver scoring runs.

A question
If the nuggets do lose 2 of 3 and we win out does that mean the dubs are in the post season OR do they have to lose 3 of 3 with us winning out to get in?

by pfree on Apr 11, 2008 12:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

1 Game Behind
pfree:  We are 1 game behind Denver, so we need them to lose 2 of 3 and the Warriors to win out to make it in (or for the Nugs to lose all 3 and we win 2 of 3).  I would prefer the latter!

by quicklymilktea on Apr 11, 2008 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm drained
Yeah, I was at the game and I must say they left it all out there. Everytime the Dubs made a run, Denver had an answer.

I was at playoof last year and I though the crowd last night was fine. Broke the record with almost 21,000 fans. Standing room people lining the entoru upper deck. Don't know how you all can comp,in about the crowd you're at home. If yoyu care, get out there. Get out there and make it happen. Don't sell your tickets, tell your boss you're going out to the game, borrow some money, scalp a ticket and f*ck your homework, save some money in advance. If this was impiortnat to you, you would find a way to go. I don't blame you if you canlt make it to the game, but anybody who was not at the game has no right to talk sh*t about the fans. None. You chose to sit at home. The fans were there because they cared. Besides, half the chumps on these open threads call the Wariors dead as soon as they fall behind 10 points. Not exactly the type of fan that would energize a comeback in an arena. Maybe watching TV and typing on the keyboards is actually the best place for you "realists." Enough said. I'm still hurtin' inside.

Yes, Denver broke our hearts, the bastards. The Warriors were a couple of plays away all night and just couldn't get it done. The zone flummoxed us and they have no one who can shoot over it and draw the opponent out of the zone. The colder we got, the more they packed it in. You can give all the effort you want, when they are daring you to hit an outide shit and you can't you're in trouble. They tried driving, but that is futile. When Iverson hit that late three, there was a collective groan, like 21,000 people getting kicked in the sotmach. They kelpt scrapping and if Baron's three wnet with over a minite to go, they would have been down 6 with few possessions to go. When uit rimmed out, you could have knocked us over with a feather.

Yeah, I went hoarse by the middle of the first quarter or I wold have yelled louder. But that's not the point.

I know they went down on their swords last night. There is still an outside shot at post-season. But I never saw them quit. Just glad I was hanging there with them last night, painful as it was.

If the W's miss the playoffs
they should at least get some extra ping pong balls for the draft lottery. While losing teams in the East make the playoffs the WAY OVER .500 Warriors don't? That is a travesty. I know, it happens sometimes, but not with teams this good.
Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. I'm amphibious.

It's all about heart
Baron doesn't play like he wants to win.  He jogs up and down the floor.  He dared cp3 to hit a 3 to seal the game.  the two most important games of the season and baron didn't show up to win. a triple double don't mean a thing in a loss.  Baron, jack, and barnes are the leaders of the team.  hmm not one of them drafted by the warriors.  why wasn't monta a captain over barnes?  J-rich played with 100% intensity no matter what.  The front office traded away the heart and soul of the warriors, this is what we get in return.  We still had one more year with our squad which could've ran the table, instead the front office decided to think of the future and how much money could be made in the long run.  The future means nothing cuz all we have is the present, but that applies to life and  the NBA is a big business. Big Businesses have no souls, only profit margins. and unless you have some players who play like it's their life then you're not gonna have championships.

Sure the warriors can beat any team in the league on any given night, but when the pressure is on, the warriors shun the light.

I didn't want to admit it this whole season but there was no way they were gonna a win a championship.  Last year i would say without a doubt in my mind that they could win, but this year i would say they could win but would have doubts.

47 wins is the same as 14 in miami.   Do i hope the nuggets go 1-2 yes, but i question if the warriors have enough heart to go 3-0.  Baron is a diva, playing a full season and it happends to be his contract year, surprise? no.  Having a monster dunk on AK then showboating in a playoff series loss, sure funny at the time, but i'd much rather see mj crying holding his first championship trophy, that is timeless.  Baron gets booed in NO with reason, he's a showboating loser.  Baron is comparable to TO and MJ is comparable to Jerry Rice, who would u rather have?

Some people play to be champions and some do it for the fame.  It's obvious to see what baron is all about.  All the people that will defend Baron, it deosn't matter.  When a mans heart is questioned it's up to the man to show his true character.

Prove me wrong Baron, Prove me wrong.

J-rich playing hard every second on the floor and apologizing to the fans after not making the playoffs?  That is heart.

I never questioned J-Rich's heart.  That means something.  By questioning Barons heart, that means something as well.

Winners win and losers make excuses.  The warriors have been losers for 14 years, it's easy to see why the fans would make excuses.

The truth hurts, but take it for what it is.

I understand what you're saying
but Baron gave everything he had this year. He's played in every game and he's averaged 40+ minutes. A player with his injury history is bound to break down eventually. In the end of the game at the fourth quarter, he looked like the only Warrior with that defiant expression on his face who refused to lose. He had a 3 that everyone in the arena thought was going in that rimmed out, but he had scored 6 points right before that.

And were you questioning his heart during last year's run?

I think the problem here is fatigue, not heart.

exactly...
In the big scheme of things, maybe we could also relate it to the fact that the Dubs are no longer under the radar.  People are catching on to Nellie's coaching style and what not, couple this with the fact that Nellie has been riding his starters since the beggining of the season, then on top of that, the lack of bench support.  Piles of straws and more straws.

The Laker game where the Dubs lost because of the Fischer take down seem liked the straw that broke the camels back...ever since then they didn't have the same intensity.  It seemed like no one could pick the team up emotionally after that...

I think they are mentally drained...(i'm sure almost every working adult and student knows what this feels like.) Now add public scrutiny (GSoM, mass-media, blah, blah, Charles) to the feeling and it becomes magnified, something very hard to cope with.  That's what the Dubs looked like the past two weeks, mentally drained...

A couple of
good things here for the Dubs and Us...

Denver, Sat against Utah at home (practically never looses at home.) This game is important because Houston right now has home court advantage, Utah will come out to play...

Denver, Sun at home against Houston, If the Jazz win that's a double bonus because of the pressure it puts on Houston to keep home court...Houston will play...

Come Sunday evening, the Dubs will know whether or not they still have a shot...

One good thing from the Chicken Nugget game is that we all got the depression out of our system, so if they don't make it after Sunday, we (I) won't feel as dissapointed as we were yesterday...

We look like the allas Mavs from a few years ago..
when Nellie was coach. There was no 'D' in Dallas and despite all that talent, it didn't really take them far. Since Avery "wide mouth" Johnson took over and preached defense or no PT, they have made it all the way to the Finals.
THe W's porous defense along with their live and die 3 point shooting turns out to be the keys to their demise.
Hey, we can hope and pray we win the last 3 out and Denver butt nuggets stumble and lose to Utah and Houston, but we shouldn't even be in this situation. If we put the clamps down and played our game, like we did in the 1st qtr, we shoulda been the ones in the driver's seat. Zone defense? Come on...the Warriors would break through this when they had supreme confidence. Sometimes you just gotta quit taking so many risks on D and just play the fundamentals.
Let's hope Dizzle and the rest of the squad can put this behind them and just take care of the Clippers, Suns, and Sonics. Heads high!!!

Go Jazz! Go Rockets!
Saturday will definitely either kill my hope or keep it alive.  If Utah wins, which they will...the Rockets are going to WANT to beat the Nuggets Sunday to maintain home field as 5th seed.  Yes, they are still playing for Home Court!!!!  Another perfect scenario for the Warriors!  Hopefully Denver loses both games.

If Denver loses both games...the Warriors playoff hopes are back in their hands...and I have a perfect game plan for the Suns game...

If Denver loses both games...a hard foul on Stoudemire or Nash (and I mean hard...get Barnes in there to just lay it on 'em...so what if he gets thrown out...can we count on him just this once???...whew...breathe)  Then, D'Antoni might consider resting his team after that!  He's not going to want to start the playoffs limping!

Still Believing REALLY...
I REALLY FEEL LIKE THE NUGGETS WILL LOSE 2 IN A ROW.

If I can get enough people to believe with me...we might just transfer some of our energy to the Jazz/Rockets!!!

...still a flicker of hope!
