The Warriors couldn't have gotten this Texas 2-Step road trip off any worse. Last night they suffered an ugly loss to the San Antonio Snores with an uncomplimentary soundtrack provided by the homer Spurs announcing crew. It wasn't pretty. A loss tonight would be even less prettier. It would put the Dubs a full 2 games behind the Dallas My Little Ponies for the 7th spot and 1.5 games behind the Denver Nougats for the final invitation to the Western Conference Spring Dance.

Here's what I wrote about this monumental game in this week's edition of Counting W's for Comcast SportsNet Bay Area:

Wednesday April 2: Warriors at Mavericks
After getting down big early the Warriors came up even bigger when it was all said and done this past Sunday. But remember Dirk Nowitzski and Jerry Stackhouse were absent from that big game. This game in Dallas is going to be infinitely tougher. If the Mavs wise up and trot out an inside-outside combo of Brandon Bass and Dirk with Mr. Triple Double Jason Kidd creating easy opportunities for them, it could be a long night for the Warriors.

Shooting percentage-wise Dirk, Josh Howard, Jason Terry, and Stackhouse with Kidd dropping dimes should give the Mavs a big advantage over the Warriors. The key will be creating more possessions and more shot attempts for the Dubs. They're going to have to do this with deflections, steals, and blocks. The Warriors ability to force turnovers is going to be what makes or breaks this game for them. It's going to take focus and I think the Warriors have what it takes.

Also, do you really think the Warriors are going to lose the season series to the rival Mavs 3-1 this season? I don't.

Prediction: 1 more for the W column

As of 1:15pm today it looks like both Dirk Nowitzki and Jerry Stackhouse will not be playing in tonight's big game (See Dirk participates in shootaround, then rules himself out [AP]). That means there probably won't be any Ghost Riding the Dirk from Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes or any Warrior Killer efforts from Stack. That doesn't mean it's going to be an easy win in front of the soft Dallas crowd by any stretch, but it does mean that a loss here for the Warriors is completely inexcusable.

This is (almost) it.

Predictions:

Warriors by 5 GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLS!
Boom Dizzle, Stack Jack, and One Man Fast Break rebound from last night's Big 0.5 outing and give us the Big 3.
Bay Area hoops legend Jason Kidd messes around and get a triple double.
This game is 100x more entertaining than last night's.
Josh Howard goes off for 25+ points and 8+ rebounds.

I hate these kind of games where the star of the opposing team is not playing (unless you're name is Kobe) or the kind of games where we SHOULD win. I know, on paper, the Mavs are not better without Dirk and Stack but I think by now we all know and are frustrated at the fact that the Dubs get a little bit too comfortable when it comes to teams that they SHOULD beat. And this is one of those games. So not only am I afraid of an over confident Warriors team tonight but I was hoping Dirk would play because he definitely wouldn't be that effective coming off of that nasty injury. All I want to see tonight is the Dubs play with some sense of urgency. As I say before every game from this point on... This is the biggest game of the season.

Round 8 of the Octagon

This is the last game of our brutal stretch, although we have a New Orleans, Sac, Denver stretch coming up soon.

We've been a .500 team with alternating W/L since that @Phoenix game. I feel like it's taken its toll on me as a fan, because we haven't built up any momentum as a team. It wouldn't surprise me that it's been a drain against the team also. That could be a factor as to why there's not as much on-court team chemistry radiating from the team, and why there's a tendency to play more one-on-one lately.

With that being said, we need this win tonight to have a chance at the playoffs.

The team needs that throughout the fourth quarter
If they lead is relatively large, the Dubs need to attack and continue to attack. They cannot afford to slack. If the lead is small, they still must be able to attack and stay consistent throughout the game

why this is so huge tonight

The Warriors don't hold any head-to-head tie-breakers with either Dallas or Denver. By beating both Dallas tonight and Denver at home on the 10th, the best they can do is split the season series with both teams. Even then, they will lose out in the second tie-breaker -- conference record.

The Dubs only chance (other than just finishing with a better record than either of these teams) is a three-way tie. Then, the second tie-breaker is the combined record against the other teams that are tied. If the Warriors beat Dallas and Denver, they'd be 4-4 against those two teams combined. Denver would be 4-3 and Dallas would be 3-4. Warriors, Denver in -- Dallas would be out.

If the Warriors lose tonight, they'll fall 2 games Dallas and 1.5 games back of Denver with no tie-breaker whatsoever. They will be lose to dead and be forced to just about run the table.

So, they will have to beat Dallas (road), Denver (home), Memphis (road), Sac (home), Clippers (home) and Seattle (home) to get to 51 wins and a resonable chance to get in on the 8th best record. It is a 6-2 finish that assumes loses to Phoenix (road) and New Orleans (road).

It appears that the Westeren Conference race at the top of the table is just as volatile. In fact, none of the Western Conference teams have even clinched a playoff spot with two weeks left in the regular season!

The Warriors on-court chemistry

is non-existant. Each player is trying to beat the other team with one-on-ones. There's little ball movement, little looking for the open man, a lot of I'll take the shot. I have a REAL bad feeling about this, even though the game is early.

Defense?

Are the warriors gonna show any intensity or passion on defense? this is ridiculous! This is THE biggest game of the season... and we're half-assing it. BD's bringing it on offense... but his defensive intensity is non-existent...

Ever

since the loss to the Lakers in overtime the Warriors have been uninspired and sluggish. The offense is not at all fun to watch anymore. There's NO ball movement going on (what, like 7 team assists last night and 3 in te first half tonight?), too many jacked up 3's and not enough attacking the basket. Are they just tired? I think Pietrus being out is really hurting them, but can that really explain this much of a drop off? The Dubs really look like the odd man out of the playoff race right now, muc as I hate to say it.

expecting last year's run is too much to ask of the team. But besides these past couple games, the Dubs looked like they wanted it. If a Hall Of Fame coach can't get them back to that mindset, then no one can. Until they get mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, I like their chances.

What the hell happened to the Warriors? I know we're WAYYYYYY much better than this. I've never seen them turn the ball over so much at all this season, and Jackson was irrelevant. =[

Damn, I thought they were gonna re-group at halftime and take over the game in the 2nd half. The performance tonight was a showcase of how the OLD Warriors used to play, you know; Mike Dunleavy, Troy Murphy, Adonal Foyle. Going down easily, never really showing any fire to fight back. BOOOOO. =[

All that negativity

from the last Warriors/Lakers game seems to have made an impact of our recent play. It's like all the energy used to get mad at the call by Delaney caused the Warriors to lose any momentum they had to end the season. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, please enough with the superstitious beliefs!!!
