RECAP: Warriors 86, Mavericks 111 - Upset doesn't begin to describe it

Final Boxscore

Pretty much the Warriors D the entire night

I honestly don't know how to describe what I'm feeling right now. It's a combination of pain while being upset, frustrated, and pessimistic all rolled in one. Part of the anger is with the loss, but the majority of my pain has to do with the way we lost. It's one thing to come out on the road in a back to back and lose a close one, it's another to completely not show up.

Regular season games don't get much bigger than this. The playoffs are on the line. A single win or loss completely changes the landscape of the standings. The games will be magnified from here on out. With the Denver matchup looming next Thursday, let's hope that game actually counts for something.

I'm trying to figure out what happened tonight. My exploration after the jump.

The game just didn't start out well. It was bizarro world tonight. Nellie's former team was playing the style of ball his current team plays while his current team was playing like garbage. The Mavs simply beat the Warriors at their own game. Actually the Warriors never played their own game. Dallas wouldn't let them. They ran up and down the court faster, defended much better, and played like a team.

Mavs Defense
The Mavs had it, the Warriors didn't. The Mavs challenged everything at the rim, contested every jumper and made it difficult for the Warriors to get any sort of a rhythm on offense. They're not usually known for their defense, but tonight they had a very good defensive plan to slow down the Warriors. They essentially let Monta and Baron do what they wanted - take jumpers and drive in the lane. What they took away was the drive and kick or drive and dish. Baron had 1 assist and the Warriors had 10 overall. So while Monta dropped 27 (12-19) and Baron scored 20 (8-17), nobody else seemed to find a rhythm.

Dallas dared Stephen Jackson to shoot. They let Al Harrington go one on one. Neither was hitting tonight as they combined for 8 points on 2-20 shooting. All of the one on one that Dallas let the Warriors do essentially took Biedrins out of the game offensively. The Warriors don't post him up and if Dallas doesn't double, Beans will not be left open for the easy 2.

Their gameplan worked tonight and the Warriors were ice cold.

Milk carton. Milk carton. Irrelevant.

Warriors Defense
On the other hand, the Warriors defense, if you can even call it defense, was awful. Nellie tried to switch from man to man to a zone but the results were no different - Dallas did what they wanted on offense. They let Josh Howard go one on one with whoever was guarding him because nobody could stop JoHo tonight. Jason Terry seemingly hit everything on his way to 31 points. But I can't stress this enough, the Warriors transition D was awful. It was worse than awful, absolutely horrendous. Dallas scored 44 fast break points compared to just 16 for the Warriors. How can such a fast team not get back on defense? The Mavs had so many 3 on 2's, 4 on 2's, 4 on 1's, it was ridiculous. There were uncontested layups, backdoor alley oops, wide open 10 footers, nobody's shot was ever challenged. It was truly disgusting to watch. Like Jon Barry said in the telecast, not getting back on D is just a lack of desire and heart. You have to want it.

Tired Legs
The tired legs shouldn't be an excuse. These guys are in the middle of a playoff race so even on the 2nd game of a back to back, they shouldn't be tired. At least that was my thinking leading up to the game. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they got beat because they just had to deal with San Antonio last night. But I won't stand for getting blown out and embarrassed on national tv because of tired legs. No matter what, you have to keep the game competitive and give yourself a chance to win. I haven't seen the Warriors look this bad in a long, long time.

Jason Kidd
I used to love watching JKidd play at Cal, in Dallas the first time around, in Phoenix, and in New Jersey. I can't stand him in Dallas right now. Tonight he played like he was 5 years younger as he completely dominated the game despite scoring just 5 points. He ran that offense efficiently and continually found the open man. He rang up 17 assists, more than the Warriors had all game! The Mavs looked scary tonight and a big part of that was letting Jason Kidd run nuts in the open court.

Mickael Pietrus
I had this whole thing written up about Pietrus and my anger towards him for not sucking it up and playing. But I realized it was just a way to scapegoat him for not playing. It's funny how a little over a month ago, I considered him a detriment to the team but he's been playing so well lately, I get mad when he doesn't play. Oh how the times have changed. I believe he's injured enough to not play. I also believe he doesn't want to jeopardize his to be signed contract in the summer. Pietrus is not the reason we lost today or yesterday. But he does need to hurry up and try to get back on the court. This team has no bench right now.

At least we got a funny pic of Dirk, that's about all we got out of this game

Looking Ahead
These were 2 of the worst losses of the season and the first losing streak since the beginning of January came at the exact wrong time. With just 7 games to go and trailing Denver by 1 game, it's a tough road to the playoffs especially since we lose the tiebreaker to Denver meaning that we essentially have to beat them by 2 games. This Warriors team has been through this before and is mentally strong. Memphis is up next, time to get back on the winning track.

Monta
Nobody could stop him tonight and he came through. It's just too bad, outside of Baron, he got no help.

It got so bad
That I honestly became more interested in the Giants game. And the Giants suck worse than anything.
My pictures never show up here, so this is my new Signature

Ultimate Fight Night
I flipped the channel back n forth to Spike and watched Ultimate Fight Night...good card last night. I didn't bother screaming at my TV this time.

We didn't show up to play
I spent the entire 1st quarter cursing my TV. The Warriors played with no heart on defense. It was pathetic, maybe they don't want to make the playoffs. Jack didn't show up to play, 1-11 is horrible. Our only prayer now is to win the lottery.

Suckiness at it's finest.
Reminds me of the old Warriors when we had the Charmin Bros. on the team. Warriors better bounce back, I can't believe they're playing so weak this late in the season at such an important time. I thought this was a squad that has a ton of heart.

Memphis, if we lose to them then we fail.

by Five Ten Entertainment on Apr 2, 2008 10:32 PM PDT   0 recs

Some observations
I think the problem is that during the regular season, the stress level was not as high, so the team manages to get by. However, during these last few weeks, with the playoffs push and expectations, stress levels and expectations have risen, and some of the players couldn't come through. Part of that could be the inexperience of the younger guys to play through stressful expectations. I think we're the 4th youngest team right now.

Since some of the players couldn't pull through, that caused some distrust on the court, resulting in more one-on-one offense that we've seen lately.

Everyone talks about the Warriors chemistry. They may be a bunch of clowns off the court, but I think what we're seeing is the result of this team being put under intense stress and expectation. As a result, the weak spots are showing through, and the team falters.

An anology: Consider your group of friends. They may be a great bunch to hang out with, but if you had to work with them at a job, how many of them can you really count on to their part of the job? What do you do when they can't come through for you?

by IQofaWarrior on Apr 2, 2008 10:38 PM PDT   0 recs

Yeah
It's like in a regular NBA game. The first 30 or so minutes are ok since there's time to recover, but once there's only 3 or so minutes left you better bring your A game for crunch time.

by Five Ten Entertainment on Apr 2, 2008 10:41 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

You should...
...always bring your A game. If the other team is up by 20 with 3 minutes left...even your A+ game won't be enough to win it!!!

by BigTex84 on Apr 3, 2008 5:18 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Mehh
Now that I think about it, getting all sad and emo would just make things worse. Ever since all that outrage at the call on Monta vs the Lakers, things have gone downhill. It feels like all that negative energy spent on getting mad at that call is causing us to lose all of our positive momentum to end the season very strong. Yes, I know it's all superstitious BS but whatever.

The only thing we can do now is vent a little to get sh*t out of our system, and then quickly look forward in a positive way. LETS KEEP OUR HEADS UP!!!! WE'RE STILL IN THIS!!!!

by Five Ten Entertainment on Apr 2, 2008 10:39 PM PDT   0 recs

We better
Go 7-2 or better or we are doing nothing. This is a team that fuels on its heart and passion. I guess they both decided to hang out in Oakland. That was the worst game all seasn. Monta was great ad bwight had a sweet jam but it was bad. We are on the hot seat, and right now we should point the direction of the door if Beans asks for 5+mil or Barnes asks for 1+mil. We need a low post player who will go all out. I would not mind getting Okafo. Leon Powe would be a great pick off the bench. But the biggest thing that needs to happen is if "we believe" then the warriors need to believe.

by montasmob69 on Apr 2, 2008 10:43 PM PDT   0 recs

Okay...
is that picture of Al, Jax, and Wright photoshopped?!? or am I just tripping out and never noticed how small Wright's head is.

Anyways, after getting over the frustration of the loss...I still believe. First time losing back to back games might be the answer? We get Pietrus back on Friday, right? At full strength...we're a pretty good team. Let's finish the season strong dubs!

Am I Michael Scott? I don't know. I might just be a basketball machine.

I can tell you from personal experience (ahem, see Spurs game- http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/story/2008/4/2/1536/43330 ) that these types of recaps aren't easy to write.

by Atma Brother ONE on Apr 2, 2008 10:49 PM PDT   0 recs

quite simply
we're playing like we don't want to make it right now. there was absolutely no energy tonight which is inexcusible for the biggest game of the season by far. i know the warriors usually play bad defense, but it was simply unwatchable tonight. we might as well have stayed on the offensive end the entire time. and 10 assists for the entire game? that deserves a big fat LOL. absolutely no ball movement at all. harrington has been playing like sh!t for a while now, jackson has been garbage, barnes and croshere consistantly do nothing. there are huge problems that look like they're finally catching up to us

by AJC3317 on Apr 2, 2008 10:55 PM PDT   0 recs

CALL OUT Jackson
If you want to help the warriors make a strong finish and miraculously make the playoffs, CALL OUT Stephen Jackson publicly in this blog and elsewhere in the blogosphere. He is the kind of player that is likely to use that as motivation. Unless he is injured, the last few games have been inexcusable. Without Capt Jack the Warriors have no chance getting to the playoffs.

by ej420 on Apr 2, 2008 11:06 PM PDT   0 recs

He might be injured
I think last night at the Spurs game, someone mentioned that Jackson looks like he was limping around a bit. I only saw the 2nd half of that game in a low quality broadcast on the net with no sound, so I can't be sure.

by IQofaWarrior on Apr 2, 2008 11:12 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah its possible
i noticed it too. He was clearly in pain walking back to a timeout and was limping. I'm not sure when the injury was sustained and how much it is responsible for his performance of late. if he cant play he should step back and not hurt the team out there.

by ej420 on Apr 2, 2008 11:25 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

see -- it's karma
coming to bite him in the ass for saying Pietrus needs to suck it up.  Now Jax is sucking.

by centerre on Apr 2, 2008 11:57 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Dirk was injured too...
...he scored 16 points more than Jackson...who scored 2 points! Let's hope for GS's sake...he is not injured...he's better than 2 points!!

by BigTex84 on Apr 3, 2008 5:20 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

asdf
we need to keep Azubuike in the future, he at least gets up for these games.

I don't know what else to say. We need Denver to lose some, and we need to beat them when we play them. It sucks that our fate isn't in our own hands, but we can't b*tch about that, because it was, and we didn't take care of business.

by belilaugh on Apr 2, 2008 11:13 PM PDT   0 recs

reminds
me of last years run...

by RubberDubDubs on Apr 2, 2008 11:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Tough...
That was a tough game to watch. They looked flat, flat, flat. No energy on defense, and they missed a ton of good looks on offense.

Looking at the remaining schedule there is no way that the team we saw the last two nights makes the playoffs. Let's hope that fire and passion comes back in time for a playoff push. It looks like it might take more of a miracle run than last year just to make it to the playoffs. No tie-breakers in our favor, and all the teams above us playing well... damn.

by olympicmike on Apr 2, 2008 11:35 PM PDT   0 recs

Thing is
Even we run the table, we could easily not make it. Losing the tiebreaker (and last night's game) absolutely screws us.

If we go 7-0, Dallas has to lose three games for us to overtake them, or Denver has to lose two, or they both have to lose two.

If we go 6-1, Dallas add one to those necessary loss totals. Etc. Etc.

Basically we have to go 7-0 or 6-1 and pray. 5-2 and we're almost certainly toast. We still have games against PHX, NOR, DEN, and SAC (who always plays us tough).

Fat lady hasn't sung, but she's warming up...

After last year I will never count this team out... but the Barack Obama of GSoM is preparing his concession speech. =P

Pissed, angry, upset, annoyed....etc...
I think the best way to describe these 2 losses are:

"Shooting yourself in the foot."

Is it just me? Or are we being beat with "Warrior ball"? You know; the game that's fast paced, full of easy lay-ups, spectacular drives to the rim, steals, and open tres?

Cause isn't that type of play that makes the opposing team tired, forget how to pass or dribble, throw up j after j after j without even trying to step into the paint...oh....wait....sigh

by gunwing54 on Apr 2, 2008 11:47 PM PDT   0 recs

Jackson is totally choking
You know it all started when he threw his teammates under the  bus in the press. Real leaders don't air out the clubhouse laundry to reporters.

He's been absolutely terrible. the season has been on the brink and he's killed us -- missing shots, dribbling off his knees, screaming at the refs and not getting back on defense. What deflating, embarrassing performances he has given us in the most important games of the year.

Jack, you should have kept your mouth shut about your teammates and played better. Now your teammates can tell you they need more from you in the newspapers. Step it up, Chief.

by Dubmanny on Apr 2, 2008 11:52 PM PDT   0 recs

and it's ironic
that he's the one telling Pietrus to "suck it up" when he can't sink a basket to save his friggin life.  karma karma karma

by centerre on Apr 2, 2008 11:59 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

seriously
everyone in that locker room just needs to suck it up and play...injuries,bad blood, dirty laundry, whatever...This one on five isolation BS ain't working anymore with teams double teaming the Iso and fast breaking right back at the Dubs...they need to play like a team and handle these situations, Play that scrappy D if your shots aren't falling!!

WTF...I know alot of us fans still believe but the players have to start believing in themselves AGAIN...

by RubberDubDubs on Apr 3, 2008 1:08 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think your last statement
sums it up. We believe in our team, but the team doesn't believe in each other. That results in the one-on-one plays they've been playing lately.

by centerre on Apr 3, 2008 12:34 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

btw
Webber probably cost the warriors at least a couple of games when they sputtered while trying to adjust to him in the lineup. (home to chicago and another bad one I forget). Now 1 or 2 wins would make a difference. Can't blame Webber 100% for that, but still interesting to think about.

by ej420 on Apr 3, 2008 12:35 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think it has legs...
not the curse per-se but the fact that the Warriors are the only team in the west that didn't make one move to better their team at the deadline. I'm sure it's frustrating to the team when the front office does shit for you - while other teams are trading to make their run. Perhaps that was part of Jackson's request for more bench production - a shot to Mullin saying "where's the help."

Worst game i have seen the warriors play since 05-06, We all know that the dubs can play a little reckless and a little stupid at times,(Captain Jacks pull up threes in 1 on 4's) but we learned to deal with it understand that thats our game, but we never questioned our teams effort and heart, since the home game against the lakers it hasnt been there, even in the wins over the blazers and mavs, right now i am nervous but for some reason i can see baron gettin the team together and lettin em know that the last two games were BS and it's time to roll no excuses

Unfortunately, cost of living in Cupertino was crazy
So here i am, a die hard warrior fan in Mavs land.
I have respect for Dirk tho, because you don't see many 7 footers with that much touch
BTW Al Harrington looked way smaller than Dirk and then i realized he was 6'9" i always thought of al as 6'11".
Brandon Wright is sooooo long he can probly tie his shoes without bending over!

Yeah...BW was long...
...it kind of makes his head look tiny!! He has real potential.

And Dirk...he's an anomaly in all forms and fashions...a tall, 3-point shooter, who's white and can dunk the ball...if he weren't alive, that description would make me laugh!

P.S. Dallas is a good place to live...it's cheaper and you get more land! Good luck being a GS fan there though...in time, we might not "hate" you so much!! ;-)

I was referring to Mav's fans
A Warrior fan in Texas would be like a blooming rosebush in the middle of the Sahara.  (Texas just isn't my cup of team - I lived in Houston for a couple years and I left with an aversion to Texas that's as big as the state is wide).

One dude with a WE BELIEVE shirt was a laker fan!
I talked to Barnett he said we dug ourselves in a hole and could never get out
Tim Roy shrugged and agreed on being disappointed by the W's lack of intensity.
Then i asket Rick Buker "Mavs fan or Warriors fan?"
He saw my Dubs jersey and said "I can't answer that here in Dallas" and as he walked away he turned back and said, "I'm a Suns fan" lol

by knucklevision on Apr 3, 2008 1:13 AM PDT   0 recs

Disgusting
My three main complaints:
  1. In the first quarter, instead of getting back on defense, the Warriors back there would try to jump the passing lane in transition (which is just plain impossible) instead of backpedaling and stopping the ball at the rim.  That's just lazy basketball.  It's not physical fatigue, that's mental fatigue.
  2. Remember when Beans dove out to tip the ball away from Dampier right to Nowitski?  Yeah, there were 3 Mavs right under the basket and Beans.  It was just a horribly, horribly played game from the entire Warriors organization.
  3. Did anybody see the timeout when they came back and showed the Warriors huddle where EVERYBODY was sitting there with their heads down INCLUDING NELSON?!?!?! WTF, it was the third quarter and the margin was like 15 or so... you've still got a chance... GRRRRR!!!!
Anyways, that was frustrating to watch.  So many open shots given up.  That might work against me and my buddies in pickup, but this is the NBA fellas.

On the bright side, BWright looks like he could develop into a phenomenal defender if he wants to.  He was bothering JKidd and Dirk with those arms.

Oh yeah...
My final peev.  At the end of the third quarter when Monta brings the ball up with 10 seconds left after being scorching hot the entire game, Al just gets in his way, demands the ball, goes 1 on 1 and ends up with a 15 foot fadeaway.  AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!  That ain't right.

It seems to me that lack of intensity
has plagued the team all or much of the season, not just lately.  These lethargic efforts may be more painful now, but all those ridiculously flat performances against the Hawks, T-Wolves, etc. are coming back to bite them on their asses.

I don't get all the harping on Jackson; he has appeared to be hurt for several games now, and with the incredible lack of bench depth, he and Baron have to be pretty worn down.

by Ray of Lite on Apr 3, 2008 6:48 AM PDT   0 recs

Rough game to watch
Although it should be, it's not really a consolation that they're better than the majority of the teams in the East. Frustrating the way the playoff teams are structured. Frustrated that they're not playing w/ their usual energy and tenacity. Just plain frustrated.

by poohmami on Apr 3, 2008 7:17 AM PDT   0 recs

Also
I thought this team was supposed to feed the hot hand well. Monta was on fire in the third, but they didn't get him the ball nearly as much as they should have, and if Monta passed it, he never got it back.

But we sure as hell need to play some defense and move the ball... And whats up with the "I got five on it" beat playing at Mavs games. Do they normally play that or was it taunting our players? As for the game I felt bad for all the effort Monta and Baron put up and just couldn't get any help. anyways I am at a loss for words right now..... I STILL BELIEVE!!!!!!!

They usually...
...play songs like that...nothing taunting about it...but good observation.

something else is up with Baron
Is it me or is Baron not his usual self on defense the past month or so? He's been stayin close to half-court goin for steals against the guy bringin up the ball leading to those fast break layups. He's the last guy or second to last guy back, but he doesn't get back under the 3 point line on defense.

Maybe, his grandma still has an illness and thats been on his mind lately.

I think he's tired.
Maybe there's something else going on (who knows), but he's just looked tired to me lately.  Actually,  most of the team.  They just look tired.  I think all those long minutes and lack of good bench play finally came back to haunt them.

I think it's just plain burn out and they really need to address their depth issues for next season.

My first ever Warriors game was a 4 OT victory against the Nets in 1987.

he's gassed
It's a contract year and the Dubs look like a good squad so he tried to play all season to show teams that he could still play a full season. His heart's in the right place but he looks like he's out of fuel.

by Dubmanny on Apr 3, 2008 10:23 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Definitely tired...
It's not just Baron. It's also the second most important player on the team, Captain Jack. Monta is still young so he's still fresh but I think we all notice the decline of Boom and Jack these last few games. I know we live & die by three but there is no ball movement at all! This all goes back to Nellie not balancing out the bench minutes earlier in the season. I understand we had to win those games but a few minutes early in the game would've helped. I just HOPE they have a enough energy to make one more push...

IN STACK JACK... It might be a little bit of BAD KARMA!!! But I don't agree with everyone bad mouthing him. LOOK WHAT HE HAS BROUGHT TO THIS TEAM AND LOOK WHAT A PHENOMENAL PLAYER HE HAS BECOME!!! so he had two bad games in a row... Baron had em, everyone has had em. I do blame that damn underarmor vest he's weary under his jersey, for godsake captain that thing is hideous and I think it messes with the stroke of ur shooting.

3 for 23 in two must-win games
I know it's hard to accept, but he's just shot us right out of the playoff picture. Sure it is a team effort, but 13% from the field? C'mon.

Yes, Jackson's had a good season (except for his low shooting percentage) but we needed him to come through against top competition and he came up small. Josh Howard made Jack look silly last night and it was hard to watch. Plus he spent way too much energy bitchin' at the refs and losing his composure.

Jax wasn't a star before
the trade

I mean the guy has heart and can get hot but this is the way he is.

Josh Howard is damn good

seven games each. even if the warriors win their upcoming "winnable" games, but lose against new orleans, denver and phoenix, it won't be good enough if dallas goes 3-4 and if denver manages a 4-3 (and if they beat the warriors again a 5-2 for them isn't unlikely). if the warriors can beat denver then it will be a three-way tie, and thanks to losing the season series against these teams and having the worst conference record of the three, we won't make it in. again, it has to be like last season, dominating the end of the season. again, it's going to take some upsets on our behalf and from our competition's opponents.

the spurs was an excusable loss, but what we saw in dallas could very well seal the rest of our season.

Correct me...
if I'm wrong but Denver has a two game Conference record advantage - if we beat them at home it would be one game and a split in season series. We are obviously behind the eight ball in regards to Dallas but how are we hopeless against the Nuggets? 6-1 the rest of the way w/ a win against Denver would mean they would need to finish  4-3 or worse. Bottom line is anything worse than 6-1 and we probably have no shot, cause I can't see Denver going 3-4 or 2-5.

We are more than capable of 6-1, and apaprently k-mart is going to be suspended for the nugs game against the kings. go ron ron.
the texas losses behind us, we're still not counted out, hell, even the first seed isn't a lock in the playoffs yet. we'll wait 'til the eighth seed has a little Y next to their name before anything is or isn't at a loss.

the warriors did it last year with a, what, 5-0 run to finish off the season? they certainly can do it this year with 6-1 run to the end. i just hope this cycle of one win/one loss no effort games is over.

I just stopped and thought to myself for a while..
that everyone is getting their panties in a bunch over two consecutive losses, albeit bad losses. But lets just remember the bad times, where we had like 9 bad losses in a row and finished with like 30 wins a season. Sure, this hurts because we know how much talent there is, but lets just look forward to next game. You know damn well they wont no show for 3 in a row.

Just remember, keep your head, up no matter what. They have had a phenomenal season so far. Get pissed off at the Giants and A's. Now those are teams to truly get frustrated over. (The Giants way more than the A's)

My pictures never show up here, so this is my new Signature
