OPEN THREAD: Game #77- Warriors @ New Orleans - Biggest Game of the Year?

Warriors (W-L): 46-30

Hornets (W-L): 53-22

Time: 10:00am PST

TV: ABC

Radio: KNBR 680

Thanks ESPN for this preview!

Biggest game of the year? Well, it's too damn early in the morning for that and every game here on out is the biggest game of the year! But tied in 8th we need to push forward if we are going to make the playoffs and with only 6 more games remaining, we have to win this one. Playing against the "best team" in the West, we are going to have a hell of a time controlling Chris Paul.

But if one man can do it. It's Baron Davis!

Jump

Star-divide

The Hornets are a mystery to me. I think they are a first round upset waiting to happen, but somehow they keep winning and winning and winning. I just don't get it. Well for one, they have an incredible player by the name of Chris Paul. Arguably MVP candidate for this year it will be interesting to see if Baron brings his A-game today.

The Hornets remind me a lot of the Warriors, just more successful. With Peja playing well of late and Chandler finding a nice groove in that system it's going to be tough but I believe in our Warriors, I really do.

I want to see Monta and Baron light it up, but I also want to see Jackson and Biens play like old and regain our confidence. We got a gift wrapped in golden paper last night when the Kings beat the Nuggets and hopefully today's double-header of Suns vs. Mavs will help us out. Rooting for the Kings and Suns... uggghh I shiver, but sometimes you have to take one for the team.

GO WARRIORS!!!
Side Note: Sorry for short preview. Last minute substitute.

I hope the Warriors slept well. They can draw energy from knowing they're on national TV, that Denver lost last night, and that the New Orleans crowd is going to boo our bearded leader.

Let's go all out! NOTHING TO LOSE!

And did anyone see Chandler flex his muscles after Paul gave him a perfect pass for an easy layup? That move required no strength at all.

by IQofaWarrior on Apr 6, 2008 10:23 AM PDT reply actions

Even though we've gotten the calls early
they've all been correct. I hope the refs don't think they are favoring us, because Armstrong clearly was in the restricted area and Ellis and Harrington clearly weren't.

This better not be another Suns where they try and make it up to the Hornets by giving them all the calls in the second half. That was unfair.

Does anyone else think Ellis doesnt get enough looks and more importantly shots in the offense? do a screen and roll or pick and roll and he can get a mid range shot everytime. Hes automatic. I dont understand why Nelson doesnt get him more shots in the halfcourt offense

outcome
This games over. Im a huge fan but I really don't see them improving today. They havent showed it this past month when they fall behind, especially on the road. You get outscored 17 points in one quarter when you need to win!
Whatever happened to pushing the ball no matter what? Thats about all matt barnes can do good anymore is pass it up the floor fast and we cant even accomplish that. Too much halfcourt where guys take horrible shots or turn it over before even attempting a shot!

by sprewelllatrell on Apr 6, 2008 11:11 AM PDT reply actions

Only down 8
it's not that bad. We can't forget that we are playing the best team in the Western conference. It sucks that West, Peja, and Paul had poor halves and we are still down by 8. It also sucks that Jackson and Ellis have 3 fouls and Baron has 2. But it could be worse.

Last time we won because Jackson went off in the third. Now we'll have to see if the Warriors can step up in this pressure situation. I wonder if their mentality is still "nothing to lose" after that Sacramento game.

Tall order to steal this game. But desperate times call for desperate measures.

Ugly Quarter
This quarter's a microcosm of all that's wrong w/the Warriors when they're playing poorly: no defense, poor shot selection, foul trouble.

New Orleans is thisclose to breaking the game open in the third quarter.

What an embarrassing showing on national television. Hopefully we WAKE UP in the second half.

by IQofaWarrior on Apr 6, 2008 11:16 AM PDT reply actions

N.O.
I understand New Orleans has the best record but there not much diffrent in players than golden state? They dont have aan inside post pressence like the warriors. They rely on great point guard play finding open shooters. If they can be so sucsessfull why cant the warriors? To me the diffrence is there decision making and defense. There shot selection puts States look JV, and so far there playing just a little defense to our none.

be on the Hornets with the way they are killing us.

Unbelievable. Monta Ellis is saving our ass so what does Jackson do? Tries to go one on one and force an off balance three, trying to draw a foul on his man who never bit his fake. Way to feed the hot hand guys.

never thought I would say this...
but Pietrus would have been the guy to hold it down these last games.

I don't think Jax has anything left in the tank at this point in the season.

Pietrus was not playing early in the season and was coming into his own and would have provided the energy and spark that we so obviously lack minus Monta and Beans.

It's not like Nelson can put in Barnes for Jax either since he's no better at this point.

GG. Time to get hyped about the draft.

Be a man, do the Wright thing.

by misterjennings on Apr 6, 2008 12:20 PM PDT reply actions

I don't understand
how folks can get excited about a draft when it's only going to land us a rookie Nellie won't play --- the only benefit of a good draft pick with Nellie as coach would be to sweeten the deal on a potential trade.

by centerre on Apr 6, 2008 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Future
The future, Monta and Biedrins, looks like seasoned veterans.

The present, Baron, Jackson, and Harrington, look like scared rookies.

We had fate in our hands. Now we need Denver to lose again, even though it took a superhuman effort by Francisco Garcia to beat them in the first place.

We can't play Warriors ball for a sustained period of time. We'll play it when things are going well but if the Hornets hit a couple shots it's back to one on one isos.

I'm not sure I can believe anymore when all the captains on my team don't believe.

In all honesty
They really did play hard today, we can't really complain. In the end, we were playing the best team in the west on the road who hit lucky ass shots from all over the floor, on a bad shooting night from us, and essentially playing 3-5 (since I cant really count Jack and Al as players today). And Baron didnt mail it in, hes just exhausted and has had to play against CP3 all game.
I think Monta AB and Baron were all admirable this game.

Rest of Season.....
Im sick of all this negative and whiny attitude that some have on the Warriors right now, they don't need bandwagon fans, go to LA for that....

Im steamed that they dont go to the basket more often as Baron and Jackson seemed content to let Monta carry the load against the bast in the West and just chuck up rushed garbage shots. The passing was poor as well as the defense...That was todays issue, now with the matter at hand as long as they can hold serve at home agains the Queens on Tuesday, then Denver on Thursday they can be right back in it. Time is indeed slipping away but its not over by a long shot, true Warrior fans know that...........

it's all on Jackson. 6 points today is unexceptable. You could say he's tired, maybe hurt, but 6 points only? At least he has 8 assists, but he killed us today.

Also, I credit New Orleans. They're playing well. I think we could have beaten then with better shooting, and smarter plays.

It sucks for me that none of tonight's games are/were on League Pass: GSW @ NO, DAL @ PHO and DEN @ SEA are all on ABC or NBATV. Oh well, I guess the first one wasn't worth watching - let's hope the other two are home wins.

Whatever happened
to cutting without the ball? Not including pick and rolls, I saw one cut without the ball today, and Monta got to the line.

I'm going to keep alluding back to the first Milwaukee Bucks game but back then we cut, we screened, the ball hopped around, we created easy shots so when we had the opportunity to shoot contested threes, we didn't because we knew we could get better.

This is not the same Warriors team as last year, or even earlier this season.

Nelson is still scared to play anyone off the bench, maybe a part of Baron and Jackson's fade at the end was that they played 43 minutes?! Could that be it?

by belilaugh on Apr 6, 2008 12:35 PM PDT reply actions

It just occurred to me
that Nellie had two players on the bench he thought he could count on when the season started, Barnes and Pietrus, and they're not there now. Barnes is mentally gone. Pietrus is injured. That probably hurts us as well. From this point of view, I'm actually amazed that we got this far.

ok, let Nellie mention him then:
"I don't think you lose a star player (Jason Richardson) and get better. I think there's a step back somewhere. We didn't feel that (earlier) this year, but maybe we're feeling it now."

Nelson has a valid point when you consider the fashion in which the Warriors ended last season; there was no game that seemed out of reach for Golden State during that 9-1 kick. A blowout victory was possible against any opponent, but probable against the weaker ones.

By comparison, this year's team is scraping by, winning tough when it would have cruised at the end of last season.

Warrior fans have turned bad - this is proof
First there's a "Wave" at Oracle when Buke is shooting a free throw. (He missed, by the way. Thanks for that.)

Then, people start throwing in the towel on a must-win game IN THE 3RD QUARTER!

Newsflash to you you young ones: being a Warrior fan is not easy. Those of you who want it all now and are killing this team (one of our best in 20 years) can leave now. Yes they are not perfect, but in a normal year, we'd be the 5th seed. Sometimes it's bad luck. So what. But it is not over. Why can't you admit that? It is proable? Maybe not. Is it possible. Yes.

I'll stick around the rest of the year and see how it plays out. And I'll be there next year. You all can go. Please. Go.

That's what I call fair weather fans.

If you haven't noticed, a lot of us use the pessimism as an anti-jinx, most notably, saintdee, VonteeegoCummings, and myself. It's not that we aren't true fans, so don't even begin to question us in that area.

But now that I have explained all the pessimism, it's not gonna work anymore. Thanks. Thanks a whole effing lot.

you are not brave enough
to root for the warriors when they are down. you have too much to lose.

So, you predict a loss, and if they come back and win, you win. If they lose, you "told us so" and win there again. And others have to wear their allegiances on their sleeves.

Cowardly tactic, no?

by Dubmanny on Apr 6, 2008 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Umm...
When did I ever say I use this "tactic" so I can say "told you so" if we happen to lose. And don't we all win if the Warriors win?

And this pessimism I use is more of a superstition rather than me "not being brave enough to root for them when they are down." I root for the Dubs no matter what, win b 20 or lose by 20. I just happened to use this pessimism one time, and it worked as they came back to win the game and prove me wrong. So eversince, I use it. Superstitions homie, that's all it is. its
not baron's fault. He's been carrying us most of the year. It not jackson's fault either hes burned out also.

The problem is our bench players don't show up consistently making our starters play too many minutes which burned us in the long run. I blame our weak bench.

by saintdee on Apr 6, 2008 12:52 PM PDT reply actions

agreed
it's a function of the competition.

Nellie was forced to use the starters because there was no cushion in the standings. Ordinarily, teams that are 17 games over .500 start to feed bench players into the rotation but Nellie played the last 2 months like th postseason -- 6/7 man rotation with heavy starter minutes.

Plus, this is a pretty thin bench, truth be told.

They're gassed, especially Baron. Jackson's problems seem to revolve more around decision-making and his shot has completely deserted him yet he continues to fire away.

by Dubmanny on Apr 6, 2008 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

our coach is weak
not bench.I BELIVE almost any of the bench guys would play much better then Jax or AL did, they are just not trusted by our coach for reasons only he knows.I mean why can't Croshere or CJ or even Belinelli play some minutes instead of Jackson or AL when they suck BIG.Everyone can miss shots or make bad passes(I bet anyone can do this).

Monta should have had around 45 points at least!, but AGAIN, Baron, Jackson & Harrington killed our momentum and reverted back to that One on One offense and became lazy!

DUBZ still got a shot at playoffs, but I want to see MONTA take over, not just the game, but the TEAM! Get in his teammates and demand the ball!
All Baron and Jackson need to do is distribute and assist. All Harrington EVER needs to do is getthe garbage points and rebounds and never have a SINGLE play  ran for him again for the rest of the season!

They keep saying
that they'll "re-evaluate" before each game and that he "should be ready" by the next game. Bleh.

Groin injuries usually take 2-3 weeks to fully recover, so Pietrus should be back by now (he went down on March 21), even if he can only play 10 minutes a night. Hurry up, Pietrus!

by Caught Backcourt on Apr 6, 2008 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Brandon Roy has been out since 3/25
with a groin injury.  the time out depends on the seriousness of the injury and groin injuries can vary.  As someone who has only considered Pietrus to be a good defensive player and an asset to the team, I don't fault him for not "sucking it up" and coming back too soon at the risk of reinjury or diminished performance when he's looking for a good offer this summer.  He hasn't exactly been "embraced" by the Warriors (and certainly not by the folks on this blog).

by centerre on Apr 6, 2008 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

But Roy went down 4 days after MP did!
Just kidding.

Groin injuries can be tough, but I was hoping for some sort of statement saying, "He'll be back by this date, though he can only play for this amount of time." I don't think we'd worry so much if the Warriors weren't in this playoff predicament, but since we are, Pietrus' absence in magnified x10.

I guess it's pretty hard for Pietrus to decide. Risk re-injury and help the team win, or use his injury as a "convenient" excuse.

The reason we lost was because Jax played like a scrub. Bad shots, turnovers, lazy D. We got a monster game from Ellis and an alright game from Davis with Beans playing well.

If Jax gave when should be giving, he would have had this game.

I'm not going to toss him aside like some people on here because he's a big reason for where we are, good and bad. People forget way too easily. Understandable after a tough loss. The season ain't over yet though.

by montasmob69 on Apr 6, 2008 6:02 PM PDT reply actions

Alright
Now that the post game disappointment has worn down a little bit, let's look at this clearly.

I know everyone is saying that Sacramento or LA might be a tough game, but I would rather have to play them than Utah. Not only that, Denver, a bad road team, is playing Utah at Utah, where the Jazz don't lose.

So yes, I am assuming that Denver will lose that game. And without Artest/Udrih/Miller/Bibby and us playing at home, I think we have a good shot at beating Sac. And I'm pretty sure we play the Clippers at home too.

It all comes down to the game against Denver, and, at home, I like our chances.

Let's just wait and see what happens. There's no point jumping ship and then coming back on and then jumping back off only to have us make it. Everyone before was predicting a 6-1 finish for the Warriors would probably be good. Well, for the one loss, wouldn't it be likely that we get that loss against the BEST team in the West at their home floor?

And there is no way that inconsistent ass Denver wins out.

ow!!
that was painful to watch.
seems like the chemistry is unraveling.
they don't look very together or inspired.
the team of individuals seems to have become a group of individuals.
it's always painful to watch a loss, but lately it's been looking a little different- ugly effort, not just ugly results.
are they just dead tired??
what up??
baron and jax are the "leaders"- their effort and decision making has been, well, not playoff worthy lately.
the fastest movement i've seen from baron on transition 'd' lately has been to run at the rebounder and take himself out of the play.
7' dalton hilliard blew right past him on a loose ball.
jax is just hardheaded. he doesn't have baron's skills or quickness to just make up his mind to create 1 on 3. he just turns into a turnover tree, just gets riper with every high dribble.
they looked like spectators on 'd' and then more or less took turns going 1 on 1 on offense. monta looked great and produced again but the kickouts weren't there, they're just not playing together very well right now...
it's almost a mirror image of last year- right when they were supposed to be out of it they rallied together. this year i would have locked them into a spot, especially when nowitzki went down, and now they look like they don't belong.
i haven't lost hope, but though i recognize the players, i don't recognize the teams play.
sorry to be so negative, but i'm just really disappointed at what i'm seeing in 'crunch time', i really believed they were going to scrap a little harder.

The dubz just don't look like the dubz, i think if pietrus comes back and plays rest of the games, it might help. I think pietrus is the missing piece in this last stretch. Anybody agree?

hypothetically speaking...
What if Air France comes back and stinks?

I hope he comes back strengthened, focused, and on top of his game since he's gotten so much rest...

I'm only wishing and hoping that Pietrus will come back and be a contributing factor to our depleted/non-existent bench. We just need another body that Nelson can actually use (without reluctance) to give our guys some rest and to give us some more energy.
