Open Thread: Houston @ Denver, 6pm

Tonight is a big night for Warriors and Nuggets fans. Houston visits the Rocky Mountain air with a chance to knock the Nuggets into 9th and put themselves in a tie with the Hornets for 2nd in the West. Both teams have something to play for. But it will be tough for Houston to win. Even though they're on a 5 game win streak, Denver is 31-8 at home, so they'll have to bring their "A" game to win. Go Rockets!

Update

The Rockets have won six of their last eight games against the Nuggets, including two of three this season. F Shane Battier (brusied foot) is questionable and G Tracy McGrady (strained shoulder) is probable for the Rockets; C Nene (groin strain) is doubtful and G Allen Iverson (fractured finger) is probable for the Nuggets.

============================================
From Sat Apr 13 - Open Thread: Denver @ Utah

That other team is playing tonight @ Utah. We need the team that knocked us out of the playoffs last year to knock Denver down a notch. Big, big game.

============================================
From Tue Apr 8 - Open Thread Scoreboard Watching III

5 games left and tied for 8th. We have to finish 1 game ahead of the Nuggets because we lose the tiebreaker. If we run the table, we're in.

Denver schedule:
Tue 4/8: @ LAC
Thu 4/10: @ GSW (BIGGEST GAME OF THE YEAR!)
Sat 4/12: @ Utah
Sun 4/13: vs Houston
Wed 4/16: vs Memphis

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the GSW/Den series is 2-1. If the Warriors win Thursday the series will be tied. Then we'd be talking about conference records in the event of a tie? If both teams win today the nuggets come to town one game up in the conference record. If the Warriors win not only do we gain a whole game in the standings but tie up the season series and conference records. We haven't lost any tiebreakers just yet. But all of these things hinge on Thursday's game.
If we lose the season series on Thursday and fall two games back in terms of the conference record and lose a whole game in the standings, then we'll be having a whole different conversation.

    okay...
I had this same argument with one of my friends.

    Denver 46-21
    Warriors 46-21

Now, the rest of the season both teams will end up playing only within their conference.  Currently Denver has a better conference record.  (27-20 vs 26-21) If we end up tied at the end of the year since we both have the only conference games left there is no possible way Denver will not have a better conference record than us even if we beat them!!!
Example- We beat Denver, but we end up tied at the end of the year.  That can happen if Denver wins out and we lose to Phoenix.  Warriors do not make playoffs!  So the only way we will make the playoffs if we are ahead of Denver or Dallas.  I hope that made sense

    Someone correct me...
If we win tomorrow's game against the Nugs won't we have the tie breaker? In other words, if we beat Denver tomorrow and have the same record as them at the end of the year, we're in right?

I believe it all comes down to Thursday...
Check out this link, and let me know if I am misinterpreting anything:

    http://www.nba.com/statistics/playoff_picture.html#tbb

If I am not mistaken, if head to head and conference records are the same, then it will come down to record vs Western Conference PLAYOFF teams. Right now, we are tied with Denver in our record vs Western Conference playoff teams. Therefore, it all comes down to Thursday night, because if we win Thursday, head to head will be tied, conference record will be tied, but we will be one up in record vs. Western playoff teams. Am I missing something ?

by All About The W on Apr 8, 2008 4:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

    It is impossible...
for us to have a the same conference record as Denver if we end up tied.  Forget the tiebreakers people!!  We need to be ahead of them, bottom line.  aghhhhh

    Simple mathematics
    Current Conference Records
    Warriors 26-21
    Denver 27-20

We play the same amount of conference games to end the year (5).

If we end up tied, the record for the last 5 games would also have to be the same which means we would still be a game back for conference records!

Sorry about my dumb explanations from the last post.  Hope this made more sense.

    You're forgetting...
You're forgetting that GS plays Denver, so if GS wins Thursday, it will look like:

    Warriors 27-21
    Denver 27-21

yes true, but then we would be ahead one game and wouldnt even need the tiebreaker.  IF we end up tied at the end of the year it is impossible to have the same conference record!

    Well...
Well, if we don't win, we don't need any other tiebreakers besides head-to-head, which we would lose.

    No

    Tiebreakers!
If... err... when GS wins Thursday:

    Tiebreakers:
    1. Head-to-head
     2-2. Next tiebreaker!
    2. Division record
     Does not apply. Next.
    3. Conference record
     Denver 27-21
     GS 27-21
     Next.
    4. Record vs. Western Playoff Teams
     Denver 11-16
     GS 12-16 (pwnage! :))
But let's continue, just for fun.
    5. Record vs. Eastern Playoff Teams
Won't bother. Too hard to calculate.
    6. Better point differential.
     Denver 3.8
     GS 2.5
    :(

    question
if houston wins against denver on sunday, do the suns still have anything to play for the rest of the season? right now the suns are up 2.5 games up on dallas and would be 2 games back of houston (if houston beats denver) the suns only have 2 games left in their season against the dubs and trailblazers. maybe the suns rest against us on monday?

    you're right
if Houston wins, the suns would be 2 games back with 2 left to play, but lose the tiebreaker to the Rockets, so there would be no way to catch them.  However, I believe they could mathematically still catch the Spurs, since they won the season series against them, especially if the Spurs lose to the Lakers tomorrow.

Even if they are locked into sixth, last year they played all out and won against the Clippers in the EXACT same situation, while the Mavs rested, giving us 8th. We should be prepared for a hell of a battle Monday night.

I want to comment on Houstons game with Denver
Does anyone else notice the need for Houston to beat Denver in tomorrows game to secure home court advantage and take a giant step forward in the rankings... Especially with San Antonio playing the Fakers?

If we go 3-0, we will be in the playoffs... I see it very clearly.

Utah is beating Denver as we speak.  Houston has to win tomorrows game and are on a roll. When Denver starts a slide of losing, they usually lose two back to back.

    Go Dubs.

No heart from Houston right now. If a Kings team without Artest can win against Denver, then a Rockets team without Battier sure as hell can win against them too. Especially since T-Mac is a much better player than Kevin Martin.

    From the inside though....
At least they are not settling for jumper after jumper from the perimeter (Other than Novaks 3's which look good)....
I don't like being down by 16 with 3:42 left in 2Q because if the Rockets get to the point where they feel they are out of the game they will wave the white flag early as they have the Jazz tomorrow night in Utah.

We need to get this one down to 10 by the half and we will still have a shot.
Melo has 3 fouls now so that doesn't hurt.

Picks up 4 fouls in the second quarter.
I think we can put this one to rest and call it a season boys.
Down 18 with 2 minutes to go in 1H and Houston has no desire to compete tonight with a team that is playing on a B2B with travel and 4 games in 5 nights.

    SCREW HOUSTON
this is 2 years in a row where Houston screwed us over. I'm not watching the game, but I can already imagine T-MAC chillin on the bench right now, grinning with his stupid eyes watching his team get scraped. I wouldn't have been mad if they lost in a close game by about 5 or so points, but this garbage ass team is getting blown out. Houston's definitely going to get swept in the playoffs. The Warriors would have at least made some noise in the postseason.

And T-MAC has NO heart at all. Even someone like Kevin Martin or Kevin Durant can take over a game and beat the Nuggets, yet T-MAC is supposed to be much better than those two but he can't even dominate. No wonder why he's a 2nd round virgin. Reminds me of last season's playoffs where he was playing Game 7 in Houston and still couldn't win the game. What a failure.

    We got this
Memphis has Rudy Gay, who can get his against a team that plays no defense. They have Mike Miller, who we have to hope has a good shooting night and gets crazy hot on them. Darko Milicic will come out with a MONSTER GAME to prove to all the critics he was worth the 2nd pick over Carmelo. Mike Conley, angry about people saying Memphis should draft Derrick Rose, will torch Denver and make a serious 1 game run at ROY. Brian Cardinal, always a Warrior fan favorite, will please the Warriors again as he earns his nickname "The Janitor." Juan Carlos Navarro, still mad at Najera's country for declaring its independence from Spain, will drop trey after trey in Najera's grill. Hakim Warrick, still thinking he was the main reason Syracuse won the national title, will take playing against Anthony personally and have a career game. Crittenton and Lowry will have some good games as well.

Hopefully Memphis deciding to hold on to Miller at the trade deadline will help the Warriors.

A true Warriors fan will give Anthony and Iverson food poisoning the night before the game, Iverson will try to tough it out and go 0-19

    It's as easy as that.

To make myself feel a little better
Warriors are my team, and Kevin Durant is my favorite player in the league. Of course not when he plays us though.

Anyway, It's sad watching the Sonics' last home game. I feel for these fans. They're had a losing season, but they beat 2 good teams in tight games vs Denver & Dallas. Kevin Durant is a franchise changing player, and they won't even get to enjoy him in Seattle anymore.

    Hey
Memphis beat the Lakers in LA recently (March 28th).  So you never know.  The Grizzlies can pull it out

Another twist to the post season stories
Denver owns the tie breaker vs Dallas, and if Denver wins vs Memphis and Dallas loses vs New Orleans, Dallas would end up in the 8th seed. Somewhat ironic considering that last season, Dallas lost to the 8th seed.

That is what I will now know Tracy McGrady as for the rest of his career. Thank goodness he is not a Dub. His choking is contagious no matter what team he plays for.

    Go Memphis!
    yup.

Back to the tiebreaker...agreed, how hard would it be to have a 1 game playoff? So many things happen over an 82 game season...streaks, injuries, trades, etc. that it's ludacris to give the Nuggets the edge simply because they beat them 3 out of 4 over the past 5 months.

    The Sharks
were absolutely horrible, at least the part of the game that I watched. They had a power play at the end of the game, and I'm not even sure they got a shot off. And on Calgary's go ahead goal, nobody cleared the puck, they kept trying to force passes.

I don't even know much about hockey and I know they played terrible. All they have to do is win one though, to get home ice advantage.

I know it's going to take a winning the California Lottery type miracle, but I want the Dubs to get this damn 50-win season. One way I look at it is, the playoffs format might change. We could brag and say we caused that =D
