The GSoM Political Thread, Part II
OK, the now legendary "Marbury diary" was getting impossible to navigate. 505 posts: that has to be a record for this site.
Feel free to use this thread to discuss anything sociopolitical. The other diary touched on, among other stuff:
• McCain/Palin
• Obama/Biden
• The "War" in Iraq, and war in general
• The death penalty
• The "liberal media"
• Big government
• Jeremiah Wright
• Adolf Hitler (see Godwin's law)
• Stephon Marbury
I was also thinking it could be fun to have a running "game thread" on the remaining debates, including Thursday's upcoming VP debate.
Anyway, if you want to keep the discussion going, rec this diary! It would be cool this time to hear from some of other people than the usual suspects. I respect young Sam's persistence, but by now I think he's made his positions on many of the issues pretty clear. Ditto for me, Skeptic, JAE, Droppin_knowledge, et al.
And as always: I know we all get heated with this stuff (well, I do anyway) but try to play nice.

RIP Gene Upshaw
This came as a total shock to me — I didn't even know he was sick. I guess I've been away from the Bay for too long.
Age 63 may seem old to a lot of the kids on here, but it's way too soon. I remember rooting for him as a kid during his mid-late-'70s Raiders heyday. He always seemed like a very cool, charismatic dude, and a born leader. No surprise he became head of the players' union.
Anyway, thoughts, prayers, condolences to the family, etc.

Alien Sam Cassell Game
Not sure if this quite as exciting as NBA 2K8 or whatnot, but there are less amusing ways to pass the work day...

JRich is white hot
29 points, 7 boards, 2 ast, 3 blk, 1 stl tonight v. Philly. Ouch. Timing is exquisite too -- talk about twisting the knife. I still think it was a good trade, but he definitely seems to have fully regained his pre-injury form. Good for you, JRich. Now next year try to lead your team to the playoffs...

Marreese Speights??
DraftExpress now has us taking this dude at #14. I know nothing about him. The size (6'10 250), wingspan ("super long arms"), NBA comp (Al Jefferson), and pro-rated numbers look pretty promising.
Plus he has an awesome name.
Any other info on this dude from NCAA hoops junkies would be greatly appreciated.
Love,
Sleepy

Crazy, beautiful, and dangerous
Not sure if the tireless Mr. Muritqua covered this in his latest DailyDubs, but the Ws got a little more ESPN love today, courtesy of J.A. Adande:
Think about what life would be like if the world operated under the same principles as the Golden State Warriors. Hot fudge sundaes would be nutritious and help you lose weight. Whale-sized sport-utility vehicles would get 50 miles per gallon. "I Love New York" would be up for an Emmy.Nice read, if not particularly enlightening for anyone who spends a lot of time on this site. But it's great to see that the national spotlight from last year's playoffs is still shining on us; and that, more importantly, our guys continue to flourish in it. Keep on blossoming, boys.
P.S. -- While I have the floor, a word of advice for the amazing Mr. Muritqua: quality always beats quantity, especially where the internet is concerned. I love that your DailyDub diaries are so exhaustive, but I doubt I'm the only one here who also finds them a little exhausting. If you have the time, it'd be great for us short-attention-span types if you could highlight one or two "Muritqua's Top Ws Articles of the Day" ...
Anyway, let's go Ws. Beat the Heat.

More info on Monta's injury
Found this on the Red Sox fansite, of all places -- further proof that the Ws are beloved everywhere. Of course we all know Monta is fine now, but apparently what happened to him is pretty unusual:
Wow. I didn't see this at first but am glad I saw this thread because this is a fascinating injury. It looks to me that Monta had an unusual cervical injury called "transient neurapraxia" or "cervical neurapraxia." This is a rare injury in basketball but you will occasionally see it in football especially with safeties who spear in run support. What makes this injury so fascinating is that players lose feeling and power in their arms and sometimes their legs after a direct hit on the crown of their head. This can lead to total quadriparesis, or an inability to move or feel your arms and legs, which goes totally away in around 20 minutes and there are no long term effects. Sometimes people are left with burning in their arms which can last a few hours or infrequently a day or two. MRI of the neck will sometimes show what is essentially a bruise of the spinal cord due to it being briefly compressed during the event, but with no fractures or transection of the spinal cord.
Monta will probably be cleared to play with no problems after a full evaluation by a neurosurgeon including an MRI. Sometimes people with this injury have a narrowing, or stenosis, of their cervical spine, occult neck instability, or a bulging disk and need surgery but these cases are the minority. Likely Monta will do very well either way.
The amazing thing is that you can go from a presentation that looks for all purposes like a devastating, life altering injury, to normal in minutes. Truly amazing. This is one of the scariest things that can possibly happen to you and then to have it completely resolve is a gift. I once saw a chronic drunk who suffered this exact injury after falling down a flight of stairs and landing on the top of his head and he was so freaked out he went sober.

Again: whew. Godspeed, Monta. Can't wait to have you back. After tonight's pathetic performance by the rest of the crew, it's pretty clear we need a guy (other than BD) with the skill and the guts to take it ... to the rim!!!!

Azubuike bound for Europe??
Say it isn't so, old chap!!!!
British and Golden State Warriors forward Kelenna Azubuike (196-G/F-83, college: Kentucky) is considering several offers from top European clubs.London born Azubuike is still in the Final training camps (sic) of the Warriors but the lack of playing minutes in the NBA may drive him back to the continent for the first time. After successful career in the Kentucky Wildcats and and in the D-League with the Fort Worth Flyers he played 41 games for the Warriors last season averaging 7.1ppg, 2.3rpg.
According to his agant in the States, Azubuike has two offers from Euroleague teams: Israeli Champions Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Serbian Champions Partizan Belgrade.

Not sure how reliable the source is, but it certainly sucks if true. Kid seems to have real talent, athleticism, and a great head on his shoulders. All he's done here -- in limited stints last year and again in Vegas -- is play smart, aggressive ball with a knack for putting the ball in the hole. He's basically a not-all-that-poor man's JRich. He even fills the void left by Jason in the "handsome dude with the impressive physique who can throw it down with authority" department. Behold the glory of the young Adonis in the THE CITY unis as he goes mano a mano with the dreaded Kobester...

(Yeah, I have little doubt Kobe scored on this play, but whatever)
Seriously, Does anyone here not like Kabuki?
This is exactly what I was worried about earlier when I complained that we might have too much depth. Personally, I'd consider guaranteeing Kelenna playing time if it came to it. Trade MP2 for a draft pick, shoot Croshere and Hudson -- sliding Monta and Belinelli over to PG for 10 minutes each -- and give Buki a solid 10-15 minutes a night at backup 2. I'm not even convinced he couldn't win the starting job from Monta and Marco if given half a chance.
Plus, he was born in London, the best city in the world after Oakland and Tokyo. Anyone who wants to see Azubuike go back to Europe is a terrorist who hates puppies and would kick Jessica Alba out of bed for eating crackers. Keep Kelenna!!!
