Everybody loves rankings!

So ESPN's John Hollinger unveils his latest "PER" rankings today.

W's Highlights:

  • Richardson at #37 (#8 SG)
  • Davis at #43 (#9 PG)
  • And .... GSoM fan fave Mike Dunleavy Jr. clocking in DEAD LAST (#30) among small forwards (but of course, all that's out the window now since he's become a born-again point/power forward!)
  • I hate to say it but to me these rankings, while far from perfect, seem pretty fair. I think basketball has needed an all-purpose metric like PER for ages. I especially like that it subtracts for crappiness (poor FG and FT shooting, turnovers, fouls) as opposed to just adding up the good stuff. From the Hollinger's description: To generate it, I created formulas ... that return a value for each of a player's accomplishments. That includes positive accomplishments, such as field goals, free throws, 3-pointers, assists, rebounds, blocks and steals, and negative ones, such as missed shots, turnovers and personal fouls
