UPDATE:
Stephen Curry’s white “OAKLAND STRONG” game-worn shoes sold for $30,000 at auction — the most by a current player. His colorful pregame warm-up kicks sold for $15,100. The $45,100 raised will go to Oakland Fire Relief.
A ten-day auction of two pairs of “Ghost Ship shoes” that Stephen Curry wore on the court at Oracle Arena before and after the Warriors’ 103-90 victory over the New York Knicks on December 15th will close on Friday.
The one-of-a-kind Under Armour Curry 3s were commissioned by Curry in collaboration with the shoe company he endorses and designed by DezCustomz and KreativeCustomKicks.
The shoes are size 12.5 and feature the initials of the names of the 36 people who died in the tragic Ghost Ship fire. The pregame low tops have the words “GHOST SHIP” and “ALWAYS REMEMBER” on them in graffiti-style lettering. The in-game high tops, also in graffiti-style lettering, include the words “OAKLAND STRONG” and “ALWAYS REMEMBER,” with “GHOST SHIP” etched into soles.
In auctioning the shoes, Curry wanted to do more than just pay his respects to the victims. He also wanted to bring attention to, and raise funds for, the ongoing relief efforts, stating:
“My goal in wearing these shoes was to not only honor the victims that lost their lives that night, but also to raise awareness for the relief efforts that are underway. Hopefully through this auction we can help further assist with those efforts.”
All proceeds from the auction of his “Ghost Ship shoes” will go to Oakland Fire Relief: a fundraising effort spearheaded by the Oakland A’s that is dispersing funds to the victims’ families as well as to those who survived the fire. Money raised will help to defray the costs of funeral expenses for the dead and grief counseling and medical care for the living.
At time of publication, Oakland Fire Relief has raised $546,230. Bidding on the in-game “OAKLAND STRONG” shoes is at $10,400, with bidding on the pregame “GHOST SHIP” shoes at $9,100. Both pairs have been signed by Curry.
