When a team is as good as these Golden State Warriors, it’s easy to lose track of a guy like Klay Thompson.
Last night’s leading scorer is well-known in the NBA, of course, but often overshadowed by the flashy dunks and highlight-reel plays, which are as much a staple of this team’s offense as coach Steve Kerr’s exasperated expressions after turnovers.
Thompson poured in a game-high 27 points on an insane 11-of-14 shooting performance. He’s been toying with it all season, but last night’s showing put him back over the line to achieve the heralded 50-40-90 club. That is 50% from the floor (Thompson is juuuuuuust over this mark now), 40% from deep and 90% on free throws.
On the season, Thompson has made just over 47% of his three-pointers and has been the more effective Splash Brother so far. Compared to Curry, Thompson has made more threes (seven more than Curry) and has converted his attempts at a better rate — his 47% a full 10 percentage points higher than Curry’s rate on the season.
As his fellow Splash Brother deals with injuries and an evolving game, Thompson’s steadfast season is anchoring the Splash Brothers moniker — and that’s wonderful.
