The 4 Most Interesting Minutes of the WCF

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The first 4 minutes and 5 seconds of the third period of the first game of the 2017 Western Conference Finals are likely to be the only minutes during which both teams played to their potential. The first half of game 1 had ended with SAS ahead by 20 points, 62-42. SAS had played near their potential, but while GSW had played hard they had not played with the intensity they displayed to start the third. Four minutes and seven seconds into the third, Danny Green took an intentional foul so that Kawhi Leonard could leave the game, but the interval of interest really ended when at 4 minutes and 5 second elapsed Zaza Pachulia fouled Leonard and Leonard shot his free throws.

When Leonard left, SAS had scored 16 points in the quarter and GSW 13 resulting in SAS’s lead being 23 points. Curry had hit all four of his shots, three of them 3-pointers. To this point, it reminded some SAS fans of a third quarter of third game of the 2014 Finals when LeBron James tried to take over the game and missing only one of his many shots yet his team was four points further behind at the end of the quarter, as SAS had been scoring even more. These four minutes included LaMarcus Aldridge, Jonathon Simmons, and Leonard having all hit 3-pointers and Danny Green a layup plus Leonard had five free throws.

Of course, no one knows what would have happened if Leonard had not had to leave the game. However, hypothetically evaluating how the two teams at full strength would compare would certainly not be accurate if done off only the minutes before these four minutes or only off the minutes afterward.

The box score for the minutes is shown below. While the sample size is small, I still found it interesting to look at and muse. Which, unfortunately, is all any of us can do.
