JaVale McGee — beloved center for the Warriors and “Cinderella story of the year” — is spending free agency touring the great state of California.

On Wednesday, McGee was in Southern California to meet with the Clippers in La La Land. So far, reports of that meeting have not been disclosed. Today, he heads north to Sac Town to meet with the Kings.

Clearly, McGee is in search of gold.

With the Warriors being “salary-cap strapped,” McGee finds himself in the position of facing another minimum contract. So this California tour is about him testing the waters to see if he can get more money with another team. But does McGee really want to play in Sacramento? A team whose minority owner is none other than his relentless bully, Shaquille O’Neal?!

Perhaps McGee considered the feud settled when he walked into Oracle arena for Game 1 of the Finals wearing a “Shaq” hat.

The question, however, is whether the rift is all water under the bridge for Sheriff O’Neal.

Considering the sorry state of the Kings in recent years, signing McGee would be somewhat of a coup for a team that needs him more than he needs them.

McGee has also expressed a desire to stay with Golden State, which means the tour could be more of an attempt to force the Warriors’ front office to open its wallets than an actual desire to leave.

McGee is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, culminating with the Warriors winning the 2017 NBA Championship. He is a player who brings energy, athleticism and rim protection — to the great delight of adoring fans. Thus, keeping McGee, by any means necessary, would do wonders for morale in the fan base and sturdy the team’s chances winning another title in the 2017-18 season.
