Who would be on the Warriors’ all-time starting five?

Steph Curry and Wilt Chamberlain seem to be the only locks. Who else deserves to make the cut?

Recently, the parent company SB Nation had an interesting thought. Namely, who would make your favorite team’s all-time starting five? So, we put the questions to y’all, and you didn’t disappoint. As a fun mind game — and as a way to think about something other than our country hurtling into darkness — let’s keep the conversation going here.

To that end, we asked:

A bunch of you guys were real quick to respond, and most of the responses followed a somewhat similar bent. Here’s just a few:

So, we could obviously break this down a lot more (and we might just do that in a subsequent post, with each position really tiered out and everything), but for now I’m mostly curious to hear what you guys think.

The basic consensus, at least from the responses on twitter so far, seems to be basically:

PG - Stephen Curry

SG - Toss up between Klay Thompson and Chris Mullin

SF - Rick Barry (although I enjoyed the Jamaal Wilkes love)

PF - I guess I’m moving Durant here for this experiment, even though he’s out of position — he obviously belongs on the list

C - Wilt Chamberlain

Honestly, we got a whole lot of “Warriors core 4 + Chamberlain” answers, including a somewhat snarky tweet from young gun Hugo who was manning the @unstoppablebaby account at the time and took that argument one step further.

That being said, is it really that crazy to think Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Kevin Durant would make the (fictional) starting five, especially once everything is said and done? I mean, I loved watching Mullin, sure, but Klay Thompson is going to have a better career. And yeah, Rick Barry was great, but assuming Durant sticks around for long enough, and assuming Draymond Green stays healthy, I would definitely slide Durant to SF and insert Draymond at PF.

Imagine, for a moment, how freakishly awesome a starting five of Curry, Thompson, Durant, Green, and Chamberlain would be. They would rain fire on any other team’s starting five, anywhere, anytime. Actually, once other sites have picked their teams, it would be an interesting offseason excuse to get mad about fictional situations that will never, ever come to life.

That being said, I’d take the Warriors’ all-time starting five against most, if not all other teams’ starting fives. The only two obvious teams that jump out would be the Lakers and the Celtics, and maybe the Bulls. The fact that NBA2K is actually pursuing this in the next version of the game will be fun. Best of seven, anyone, with Curry and Chamberlain running against Magic Johnson and, uh, Chamberlain again from the Lakers?

What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
