We’re barely a week into the 2018-19 NBA season, and already the talk is heating up surrounding the upcoming offseason. Particularly, the decision of one Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors superstar, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent.
Lately, the speculation around the league has been heavily leaning towards Durant leaving the title favorites in favor of the historic, yet currently downtrodden franchise that is the New York Knicks.
It’s worth noting that, while this outcome is a distinct possibility, it’s been gaining traction largely because of unfounded speculation, and that should not be confused for reporting. Many great minds are predicting that Durant will end up in New York, but they’re doing so with the neon disclaimer that it is merely a prediction, not a report or rumor.
But naturally, that’s not going to stop Knicks fans from doing their part. And with the Warriors in town - they’ll play the Knicks on Friday in their only trip to New York this season - fans have gone all out trying to recruit the former league MVP.
You can’t fault the fans for trying - after all, this time last year Los Angeles was full of billboards trying to convince LeBron James to sign with the Lakers - but this billboard choice is a little funny.
For starters, it features Durant next to a Kristaps Porzingis who is not only depicted as being about a foot taller than Durant, but looks more like Spike from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer than Porzingis. It also features a Durant social media handle, which is weird in and of itself on a billboard, but especially weird because they opted for his Instagram handle, not his Twitter handle.
And finally, and perhaps most egregiously, they opted for the billboard’s wording to be a variant of “Make ___________ Great Again”, which seems like an odd stance to use when recruiting someone who has been vocal in his disdain for the administration that popularized the refrain.
Also, the placement is a little bit funny.
The Warriors seem unfazed by the madness surrounding Durant, but it’s also clear that the media circus isn’t going to die down at any point this season.
