The scorching start of both Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry serves notice to the league that the two Golden State Warriors are still learning how to play together better. Durant is almost averaging 30 points a game despite being cold from 3 all season. Curry is in the 50/*50*/90 club, shooting a nuclear 52% from 3. Curry has just tied the record for longest streak of games with 5+ threes.
In NBA history, there have been 23 streaks of 4+ games of 5 threes made. How many do you think were done by Steph Curry? (pause for you to guess...)
A whopping 10 of the 23 streaks were Curry’s.
This is totally unscientific, but this season feels like the first time KD and Steph are being themselves together. Year 1, everyone was polite with Sunday clothes on, Year 2, everyone was burned out with senioritis and injured. Year 3, they are realizing they can go to the hot guy without jealousy. There is still going to be tension around who gets control in crunch time, but it feels like their comfort has grown this year.
Lost in the glare of Durant’s 25 point fourth quarter explosion was how much Durant’s game has matured to help Stephen Curry’s. Durant has gotten the hang of Steve Kerr’s offense and is making great passes and reads when Curry moves off-ball, and he is also exerting gravity off-ball to take attention from and make space for Steph.
Here are some video highlights of Durant helping Curry from the Knicks game. Co-starring Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Damian Jones and Kevon Looney.
