The Warriors are still in talks with Patrick McCaw

What does that mean? No one really knows.

Towards the end of the offseason, and for much of training camp, Patrick McCaw was the biggest story surrounding the Golden State Warriors. The 23-year old restricted free agent did not accept the Warriors qualifying offer, did not accept their partially-guaranteed two-year contract offer, and did not receive (as far as we know) an offer from any other team.

It put him at a bizarre stalemate, the likes of which we’ve never really seen. McCaw either didn’t want to play for the Warriors, or had an unrealistic expectation of the contract he could get from another team. And as a result, he started the season without a contract from any team.

That initially didn’t seem ideal for the Warriors, who were lacking depth and clearly went through the offseason planning on retaining McCaw’s services. Instead, they got stuck in a pickle, and signed Alfonzo McKinnie to a non-guaranteed two-year contract, essentially acting as a placeholder until the McCaw dispute was resolved.

And then, of course, a funny thing happened: McKinnie started playing incredibly well, fit in with the team, and carved out a role. And now the Warriors don’t seem to be missing McCaw.

But according to an NBA report, they are still in communication with their second-round pick from the 2016 NBA Draft. In his roundup of insider news, The Athletic’s Shams Charania had this to say about the Warriors:

The restricted free agency of Pat McCaw continues. McCaw remains in discussions with several other teams — including Golden State — league sources said.

So we know that McCaw remains in contact with the Warriors, though we don’t really know what that means. Are the two sides in light negotiations regarding a contract and a return? Or are they discussing what it would take for the team to relinquish McCaw’s rights, so that he would no longer be a restricted free agent?

We simply don’t know, and it seems likely that this saga will continue for a while. But, while the Warriors are flying high right now, and certainly not really missing McCaw, it is interesting to know that they’re still in talks with him.
