Mild-mannered Klay Thompson is breaking out of his shell a little bit. And, as with everything else he says, it’s absolutely perfect.
In a brilliant, must-read article by Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Warriors travel down memory lane, as they return to Cleveland to face a Cavs team that is now devoid of LeBron James.
Of course, you know the history here. The Warriors and Cavs have met in four straight NBA Finals, and played 30 games over the last four seasons. The Dubs won the first Finals matchup, before the Cavs made a historic 3-1 comeback in the second matchup, to win one of the most memorable NBA Finals in history. But in the two since then, the Warriors have thoroughly dominated, with one sweep and one gentleman’s sweep.
And the team sure has some memories, for the good, for the bad, and for the could-have-been. For Thompson, the memorable moment is the Cavs Halloween party in 2016, shortly after their lone championship. Cleveland famously put the Warriors name on tombstone cookies, while adorning the party with “3-1” decor. Here’s Thompson quote, which I suggest you frame, recite loudly in public, or get tattooed on your chest:
“Oh, yeah. Ha! That was funny. Look how that turned out. Psssh. Bums. That was crazy. I forgot about that. Well, look at what pettiness gets you. Gets you 1-8 in the Finals. Idiots.”
That’s a side of Klay we don’t see often, and it is truly magnificent.
But it wasn’t only Thompson who had a memorable quote. Not surprisingly, Draymond Green did as well. Asked about what would happen if the historically-great Warriors had never fully materialized, Green noted, “They probably would’ve won one more. Kyrie probably would’ve never left. Things would be a lot different. But, hey, sucks. Sorry about it. Gotta roll with the punches.”
It’s a gorgeously Draymondian quote: Trolling and teasing, hidden underneath a compliment.
This team is so incredibly quotable and memorable. They truly are something.
