DeMarcus Cousins shocked the NBA world when it was announced that he was signing a one-year deal with the Golden State Warriors. At first it seemed like he had taken a massive discount to join the reigning champs, but then the facts began to trickle out.
The team he played for last year, the New Orleans Pelicans, weren’t interested in keeping him around. Other teams didn’t want to take a risk on an injured player with a controversial reputation. When the dust settled, the Warriors were the best fit.
It was a wild time for Cousins, one of the more fascinating players in the league. Known as Boogie, the enigmatic Cousins is loved by many, hated by many, and always wears his emotions on his sleeves. He is unquestionably one of the most talented players in the league, in his prime years, but recovering from one of the most debilitating injuries in sports. He would surely have landed a maximum contract in free agency had he not been injured, but instead had to settle for the $5.3 million mini-mid level exception that Golden State could offer.
So naturally, the days surrounding his decision were intense, emotional, and captivating. And thankfully, it’s captured on video, as SHOWTIME Sports is working on a Cousins documentary that will highlight this crazy time. In anticipation for the documentary, the company released a video with some of the raw moments surrounding free agency, including the phone call that sealed the deal.
It’s must-watch TV. Check it out.
