KD's contract

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Just watched an interview with Marc Spears that I guess KD did in the past few weeks and he is (understandably) pretty coy when Spears asks why he opted for a 1-year contract. He just says it was the best thing for him.

But it got me thinking--is there ANY really good reason for KD to have chosen that contract other than he's thinking of leaving next year? Whether he does or not, it seems to me that at the very least he wants to have the option to go somewhere else and do something else and he was willing to give up $5mm in salary to have that flexibility. If he did it to save the Warriors some money, he could have easily said that to Spears (like he did last year). So I think we have to assume he's at least thinking about leaving.

The other possibility is that he wants to see what they do with Klay and/or he wants to have leverage into those discussions (and discussions w/Draymond, though I can't imagine Dray will seriously consider an extension) next summer. That could certainly be, and maybe he wants to help Klay get the most money possible by packaging his contract together with Klay.

But as I think about it, my working assumption is that this will be the last year with KD on the Warriors. I could obviously be wrong, but I think that's the more likely scenario. And if so, I will wish him well and thank him for (hopefully) three great years. But I hope he stays.
