It seems like everyone believes that Klay Thompson will spend his entire career with the Golden State Warriors. But no one seems to believe it quite as strongly as Klay’s father, Mychal Thompson.
The elder Thompson, who was a former number one overall pick, won two titles with the Los Angeles Lakers, and currently serves as the voice of the Lakers, has long held a stance that Klay should stay in the Bay Area, rather than test the waters of free agency. But in addition to thinking that’s what Klay should do, Mychal clearly thinks it’s what Klay will do.
Speaking at the charity golf tournament for the Thompson Family Foundation, Mychal made things abundantly clear. “Oh yeah, you can mark it down,” the dad said. “Klay’s going to retire in the Warriors’ uniform. He’s going to play at Chase Center, and he’s not going to be at Chase Center as a visiting player.”
The Chase Center, of course, is the Warriors’ new arena that will be opening on the San Francisco waterfront at the start of the 2019-2020 season. Klay’s free agency - and therefore his chance to join a new team - will be in the summer prior to the start of that season.
Mychal expanded on his opinion, pointing out that not only will Klay want to stay, but the team will want to keep him, by saying, “He’s got such a good thing here. The Warriors have such a special thing here. For the next six or seven years they’re going to be championship material, they’re not going to break that up.”
You’ll find no arguments from me.
