Warriors Wonder: “Luck” saved champs according to Kyrie Irving

Kevin Durant had a monster game in Boston, but Irving feels the Dubs rode luck to the victory.

NBA: Golden State Warriors at Boston Celtics Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

I was ready to nominate Kevin Durant as the Warriors Wonder for his stellar performance in last night’s gritty 115-111 victory over the super-team-in-the-making Boston Celtics. His 33 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and the best plus/minus of the starters (+12) is enough to give him the nod for the night’s top Warrior in my book.

But that was before I found out that Boston’s superstar point guard and frenemy of the Dubs, Kyrie Irving, made a curious assessment about the Warriors overcoming his squad down the stretch.

Irving’s quote per Mass Live:

“I mean, they had poise but they also got pretty lucky too. We had two pretty good looks that either way had gone down, you know, different game. But they were poised where Klay (Thompson) hits a big shot in transition, he gets a big stop on the defensive end, there’s 21 seconds left, you know, but (Durant) has that turnover where we get another chance.

It just didn’t go our way and we had our chance on the offensive, on the defensive rebound, just, Smarty slipped. Things didn’t go our way. (Expletive) happens in games, and you just got to move on.”

The back-to-back champions “got pretty lucky”? Interesting.

Now I’ve heard rumblings that Irving is cerebral guy, and I hear he’s also humble enough to admit if he’s made a miscalculation. He apologized for being first man to abandon LeBron James and said he was sorry for his efforts to reignite conversation about the “Flat Earth” theory.

If Mr. Irving or anyone close to him is reading this, I respectfully urge for an immediate “my bad” for this latest grave mistake of a decision. If there’s one cardinal sin for speaking about the Golden Empire, it’s using the “lucky” word.

Does anyone recall how the Warriors created the smoking crater in Los Angeles formerly known as “Lob City” after their coach Doc Rivers used the “L” word about Golden State? Do you remember the apology Curry sarcastically uttered to the basketball planet for the Warriors “luck” before destroying the league for his Unanimous MVP?

On second thought after rewatching the burning rage in Curry’s eyes, if Mr. Irving wants to keep calling us lucky, that’s just fine with me. Maybe we’ll get really lucky the next we see Boston in Oracle.
