Mama knows best: Wanda Durant praises the person Kevin Durant is off the court

The proud mother is understandably effusive in her praise of her son, who is a superstar on and off the court.

The beautiful and close relationship between Golden State Warriors superstar Kevin Durant and his mother Wanda Durant is rather well documented. You likely remember KD’s touching speech when he won the NBA MVP award in 2014, and, through teary eyes, proclaimed that Wanda was the “real MVP.”

And just as the two-time Finals MVP is proud of his wonderful mother, Wanda is proud of her outstanding son. The day after Kevin officially opened the doors to The Durant Center, an after-school facility aimed at helping kids from low-income backgrounds have the tools necessary to succeed in school and attend college, his mom spoke about the human that he is.

Asked whether she’s more proud of what her son has accomplished on or off the court, Mama Durant said, “Off the court, of course. Because off the court really shows who he is as a person. Of course I love watching him play basketball - I’m on the way to his game now.”

Wanda also spoke about how Kevin and other star NBA players have been vocal in speaking up about social issues. “History has always shown that athletes have been aware of what’s been going on in society,” Wanda said. “A lot of athletes have spoken out - so I’m proud of those who do feel it’s their responsibility because of the platform they’re on.”

It’s undeniable that Kevin Durant is one of the best players in NBA history, but take it from his mama: He’s even more remarkable off the court.
