Explain One Play: Stephen Curry and DeMarcus Cousins fake a Pick and Roll

The Golden State Warriors are adjusting some classic plays for their new big man DeMarcus Cousins. Here’s a play that looks like a pick and roll for Stephen Curry, which turns into a sneak attack for Cousins. But what if Cousins wants to share and confuses everyone instead? Co-starring Draymond Green, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Shaun Livingston and 1999 Steve Kerr on the Spurs.

Notes during the GSW-WAS game

  • DMC getting much better post position moving off-ball. On the dribble backing down, he’s not quite quick enough to get past a big defender.
  • ‏Steph with 3 FTS on the cheap ass Harden move. Gotta outlaw that. You could see it hurt Steph’s conscience to jump into the defender.
  • ‏Steph has in the last few years stuck out his legs some to draw contact, but the jumping into a defender thing is clearly against his and Klay’s religion. They could get that call so much more if they focused on that cheap ass move. Please All-seeing Odin help them hold the line
  • ‏Welp, Steph just got an up and down travel trying to pump fake a 3 instead of cheap-ass jumping into the defender. No good deeds goes unpunished.
  • ‏Haha, Dray was so sure KD wouldn’t push the pace on the fast break, he didn’t even look for a pass. So KD hit him in the butt with the outlet.
  • ‏Yeah, Steph has 34 on 12-16 shooting in 29 min, but LET’S SEE HIM DO THIS UNASSISTED NEVER LETTING HIS TEAMMATES PASS HIM THE BALL yeah I thought so
  • ‏Boogie just Shaq butt-whomped his defender to the court. Maybe the power is coming back
  • ‏Yes, WAS is doubling Boogie with Dray’s man from the blind side. Boogie not finding him quickly enough, and GSW not doing the natural counter yet of Dray screen or dribble handoff for a shooter.
  • Boogie with a sweet spin through a double team.
  • ‏Now WAS denying post entry to Boogie with sagging defender, PLUS weak side help. First team to actually game plan for Boogie, I think, and GSW has not countered the doubles well at all
  • ‏Kevonzo McKooney giving nice hustle plays and defensive effort.
  • ‏Shaun’s jumper has looked flat this year, hasn’t it? Up until this year, it has been automatic from the elbow in, but not so much this season.
  • ‏That McKinnie dunk was developing all possession. Double punch, weak side double from McKinnie in weak corner. He yells for ball, doesn’t get it, cuts to hoop, eventually gets fancy feed from Shaun.
