Omri Casspi is leading a busy week for former Golden State Warriors players. Nick Young was waived by the Denver Nuggets. Patrick McCaw joined the Cleveland Cavaliers, and made his season debut, after the Warriors opted to not match his offer sheet. And Justin Holiday was traded from the Chicago Bulls to the Memphis Grizzlies.
But Casspi’s story is arguably the most intriguing, as the journeyman forward was reportedly involved in a post-game altercation with his Grizzlies teammates following a loss on Wednesday, and the spat became physical between he and Garrett Temple.
The Memphis Grizzlies' emotional team meeting after loss to Detroit tonight turned physical in an altercation between veterans Garrett Temple and Omri Casspi in locker room, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @WatchStadium.— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) January 3, 2019
The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that the altercation arose following a team meeting centered around effort and finding a way to improve. Apparently the discussion touched on the topic of the bench not being enthusiastic enough. Casspi, a reserve, tried to defend himself, which led to an argument between he and Temple, a member of the starting unit, which eventually escalated into something physical. Teammates ultimately intervened.
Casspi, who is in his 10th NBA season, is known for being a strong veteran presence, yet this is his second year featuring an odd locker room vibe. Last year, in his only campaign with the Warriors, Casspi was cut near the end of the season, to make room for Quinn Cook. According to reports, the move was made partially at the behest of some players, who weren’t enamored with Casspi’s attitude as his minutes and role had dwindled.
Then again, given the altercation that took place earlier in the year between Kevin Durant and Draymond Green, perhaps Casspi would fit right in on the Warriors roster!
