Why Steph has surpassed Magic on the all-time point guard list

Magic Johnson and Stephen Curry are both the best point guards of all time. But who beats out the other for a seat at the top of point guard greats? Both players being from completely different areas it can be hard to judge which player edges out the other one. Magic is the greatest passer of all time, and curry is the greatest shooter and one of the best ball-handlers ever.

The biggest factor between these two players is the eras in which they played. Although Magic was an amazing passer and leader, Curry changed the NBA forever with his unprecedented shooting and became known for pulling up 30 feet from the rim on a nightly basis. Magic may have been an incredible passer and leader, but he never changed the way the NBA was played like Curry did.

Due to Curry’s unprecedented impact on basketball, the future of the sport is going to be filled with incredible three-point shooters inspired by him. With all due respect Magic never changed the game after he retired like Curry will.

At the height of Curry’s powers, in his 2016 unanimous MVP season he averaged 30 points per game with seven assists on 50, 40 (45%), 90 shooting splits. That’s while averaging 11 three-point attempts a game. A stat line like that is something unheard of and the second most dominant MVP year I've ever witnessed. I just don’t see how magic can top something like that.

If we’re being honest, I think Steph surpasses Magic on the all-time list of players and point guards. One of the biggest reasons why Magic is considered the best is the strong 1980s prime days of basketball bias. If Magic didn’t play in "the golden years" I don’t think that he would be considered the best point guard over Steph any day of the week.
