STEVE KERR & Warriors Coaching Staff Are Doing Exactly What They Need To Be

Seeing a fair amount of complaints here and elsewhere on how Kerr is choosing to run the offense so far this year. Some thoughts to consider.

The warriors have played one of the most beautiful games of basketball for 5 years now. Constant motion freeing up players for open shots, and constantly getting everyone on the team involved. This is what makes Strength in Numbers actually successful.

Both the coaches and players have said in multiple interviews that the reason both their offense and defense has been so strong is everyone feels involved. Now we have 9 new players on the roster, half of them rookies, all of them younger than 23, and the talent drop off from last year is immense.

Teaching a completely new roster of players an offensive scheme is incredibly difficult, but how much more difficult would it be for the coaches if they were trying to teach an offense different from what they have been using for half a decade?

Running more Iso action or PnR for Steph might get them a few more in the wins column, but I argue it does less to evaluate/develop all of these new players. Steph has an idea of how the offense should be run, which makes it easier to coach when players make mistakes.

It also forces the new players to adapt and improve, rather than just taking a back seat on offense. Even when Klay comes back, the Dubs are still going to be relying heavily on a currently untested batch of youngsters. We've already seen bright flashes from Evans, Poole, Paschall, GR3, and others that I argue wouldn't have been as possible with a more traditional Iso/PnR offense.

This is all about the long game right now. Of course I would love to see Curry jack up 30 shots a game and go for 40+ every night, but I also want a team that will contend for the next 5 years as well. The Dubs are capped for the foreseeable future, so a few more wins this year on back breaking Curry usage is worth much less than growing future potential
