Update on the warriors financials

For those who saw my previous post a couple days ago about my prediction of Damion Lee being the last addition to the warriors, I couldn't have been more wrong. A lot has happened since then, so I thought I would give you guys some perspective on the numbers heading into next season. We are nearing the hard cap thus cuffing us from making any more signings barring any trades of our current players. Although I had previously thought that Bob Myers and co. were done wheeling and dealing, it seems now that our lineup is full of guys we feel comfortable with going forward. The likely guys who would be on the move if this were to happen (very very unlikely) would include: McKinnie, Draymond, Evans, and Spellman. I've heard Draymond's name float around which is surprising to me but I doubt he would be heading anywhere at least before the season begins. Although I would bet money no more moves will be made, I ate my words before so I thought I should mention the names who don't fall into the categories of untouchables, new draftees, or new free agent signees.

So with all of this lets summarize some of the recent news that hints towards the end of the warriors busy free agency period:

Contract details on WCS's deal

Alec Burks' surprise signing ditching the now PG-less OKC Thunder

The Omari Spellman trade that shipped off Damian Jones and yet another future (2nd round) draft pick

The sad goodbye to Shaun Livingston as the 2 million guaranteed on his deal for next year is stretched over the next three seasons

Eric Paschall getting a full three year deal at the minimum by using a sliver of the Mid Level Exception (seemed to be the only thing I was right about from my previous post)

So with all of that, It leaves us with 13 players on our roster with just under 1 million left to dish out. Here's what that would look like:

I left out Alen Smailagic as it hasn't been announced what the warriors plan to do with the soon to be 19 year old. We could give the same contract amount and/or length as Paschall to Smailagic who has looked good in summer league, but is far from making any kind of impact if he were to join the warriors squad. If we were to, it would put us 10k under the cap which in the grand scheme of things is pocket change. I believe one more year of Santa Cruz would be the best for him to build up his skills at the second highest level, but giving him a contract now could give the warriors some insurance of having a 14 man roster when 11 active players is the minimum (up to two weeks at a time). If he were to get a SF warriors contract, he could live on G league assignments as Jacob Evans did last year and come up as a break-in-case of emergency type of player. My guess is that he will get the big squad contract as the warriors' hands are tied financially as they only have enough for a minimum contract for a player with 0 NBA experience. With no other prospects who fits that bill better than Smailagic, it seems like he will get the benefit of the doubt.

As far as the future of the second two-way player spot, I am still high on Damion Lee taking a second year in that slot as he did last year. He was sitting again at the warriors summer league game near D'angelo Russell which points towards the Dubs having some sort of plan with him going forward, and this being the biggest role they can give him at this point. Other candidates include having Smailagic on this type of deal for a year or some outside prospects such as Malachi Richardson or some other player who has impressed in this year's summer league.

Some notes on the numbers above:

Alec Burks contract is shown as 2.3 M but only 1.6 M counts towards the cap as any veteran with 3+ years of experience who signs for the minimum counts the same as someone with 2 years of NBA experience. So this unfortunately does not apply to Glenn Robinson (2 year deal) or WCS (above min + two year deal).

There are team and player options for many of the players above for later years:

Poole, Evans, Spellman all have team options on the last two years of their contracts

Robinson, WCS, Looney all have player options on the last year of their contracts

Klay Thompson has a salary for the 2023-24 season
