No, DeMarcus, no.
After gamely struggling through a pair of severe injuries with the Warriors last season, only to go down again before LA Lakers training camp, DeMarcus Cousins bad run reached a new low today. All of this is alleged at this point, but the allegations alone are troubling.
As reported by TMZ earlier today, DeMarcus Cousins’ is under investigation by police for threats made during a phone call. It was the day before his wedding, and they were arguing about whether or not his son would attend. He has since been named by his ex-girlfrend (and Mother of the child) in an Alabama court seeking a restraining order due to threats of murder. Again, these are all just allegations, but the audio (if real) would almost certainly signal an end to Cousins’ NBA career.
You can listen to the salient portion via the link above, but here’s the text of the exchange as transcribed by TMZ:
“I’m gonna ask you this one more time before I take it to another level,” the man says ... “Can I have my son here, please?”
Christy responds, “No” -- and that’s when the man makes the alleged threat -- “I’m gonna make sure I put a bullet in your f**king head.”
That’s when the audio cuts off -- but Christy has since filed court docs in Alabama seeking a restraining order against Cousins claiming he ALSO told her that he was going to kill her, “even if he didn’t have to get his hands dirty doing it.”
A spokesperson for the Mobile, Alabama police department confirmed to TMZ that they have opened an investigation into the matter; and the woman has filed for a restraining order.
Cousins was already perched on the outside edge of the NBA. Once dominant, it’s not at all clear if the 29 year-old would even return to the league after his most recent injury.
As recently as 2018, Cousins was dominating in New Orleans with an impressive average of 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. A ruptured Achilles kept him out for most of the following year, appearing in just 30 games for the Golden State Warriors last season. His season essentially ended with a torn quadriceps muscle, though he did manage to appear for the playoffs, it was largely symbolic.
Cousins went on to sign with the Los Angeles lakers for the 2019-2020 season, but tore his ACL during a Summer workout.
If these allegations are proven to be true, Cousins could be in serious legal jeopardy because this audio certainly seems to constitute a reasonably perceived threat of physical injury.
