The most exciting part of the NBA season is in full swing. No, it’s not Opening Night, or the All-Star Game, or the NBA Finals.
It’s the transaction period.
Players are getting traded, and while teams can’t officially negotiate with free agents until Friday (and can’t sign until Sunday), the rumors and reports are already swirling. And to add to the fun, the 2020 NBA Draft is on Wednesday.
Over the next week there will be even more rumors and even more reports, and even some actual action that comes from them.
Which leads to my question: will the Golden State Warriors trade Andrew Wiggins this week?
When the Warriors executed a sign and trade for D’Angelo Russell, it was clear that part of reason they did so was to keep a max contract on the books so that they had a path to acquire a star, potentially a disgruntled star forcing a trade.
They traded him for Wiggins, and while the team appears to greatly prefer Wiggins to Russell, the thinking remains the same. Wiggins’ greatest value may be that the Warriors can make salaries match if a star player hits the trade market.
So over the next few days we’ll see plenty of tweets and articles — ranging from actual rumors to people coming up with their own ideas — putting Wiggins in trades, usually paired with the Warriors No. 2 pick in the draft and/or the Minnesota Timberwolves first-round pick in 2021.
I’ve already seen rumors linking Wiggins to James Harden and LaMarcus Aldridge, two trades that would be very shocking if they happened. We’ll see some creative plans to get Ben Simmons in a Warriors jersey, or maybe even Joel Embiid. Jrue Holiday? Sure, why not.
The Warriors clearly have some faith in Wiggins, but they’ll also use him as a trade chip without thinking twice if the right player is made available. It’s just a matter of if the right player with the right contract can be had.
So what do you think? Will Wiggins still be rocking a Warriors jersey this time next week?
