According to a report from SNY’s Ian Begley, the Detroit Pistons have their eye on Golden State Warriors assistant general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr.
It’s unclear what position the Pistons are looking at Dunleavy for, since they are revamping their front office. While they don’t officially have a general manager, it seems unlikely that Dunleavy would be considered for that position, since he’s only spent a year in the assistant general manager ranks.
With that being said, it’s probable that the Pistons would have to throw the bag at Dunleavy if they can’t offer him a promotion. Conventional wisdom would suggest that he’s happy with the Warriors. Golden State is considered one of the top organizations in the league, they figure to compete for a championship for the next few years. He played for the Dubs more than for any other team after getting drafted by them in 2002.
Then again, you never know what drives a competitor. Dunleavy could be intrigued by the prospects of turning around a bad team, or simply want to go somewhere where the fans aren’t quite as hard on him.
Either way, it seems most likely that he’ll be wearing a suit and tie for the Warriors when the 2020-21 season begins, but don’t count out Detroit just yet. We’ve seen plenty of important personnel get pulled away from the Warriors over the last few years.
While the Warriors certainly seem high on Dunleavy, fast-tracking him from scout to assistant general manager in just a few years, I’m sure plenty of fans would be happy to see him cash checks from a different team.
