This week at SB Nation is “Video Game Week,” which probably resonates well with Golden State Warriors fans. Basketball video games are just fantastic. I say that as someone who’s not a very big fan of video games, but it’s just accurate. Basketball video games are the absolute best.
And there are tons of them, from classics, to mainstream hits, to forgotten wonders and duds.
What’s your favorite? Or if you’re more inclined to it, what’s your least favorite?
There are strong cases for two games, and I assume most people will pick one of them.
On the one hand, we have the flavor of the day, NBA 2K. 2K is the most popular basketball video game on the planet, inspiring NBA-partnered leagues, and even having celebrities who got famous playing the game.
On the other hand we have the classic to end all classics, NBA Jam, and perhaps the most iconic line in sports video game history: “He’s heating up!”
But I’m going to be a contrarian: My favorite basketball video game is NBA Street Vol 2. That’s primarily because of sentimentality — I used to play it with my best friend during some really wonderful years of my life — but it also was just a great game.
I never liked playing the realistic NBA video games quite as much, because I preferred just watching NBA games. But NBA Street Vol. 2 mixed the NBA fun with some streetball flair, some amazing hip-hop beats, and some truly outrageous combos (NBA Ballers was great as well).
I loved that game. Take me back, please.
