Thompson: The Warriors’ upside is clear, but their depth is getting in the way | The Athletic

“Yeah, I am a difference-maker,” Kuminga said. “I know I am. But it’s not up to me to do certain things. How can I say it? It’s not up to me to control my minutes. I feel like I’ve done that. But the last voice ain’t mine. And it’s not easy because I know how to score the basketball. I know how to pass. I know how to do different things on the floor. But it’s about putting all that together. With the people we have on the floor, it’s just tough to put it all together. I’m trying to figure out how to manage that.”

NBA Power Rankings: Luka, Mavs impress in West; Celtics still the team to beat | ESPN

17. Golden State Warriors

2023-24 record: 15-15

Previous ranking: 19

Next games: vs. MIA (Dec. 28), vs. DAL (Dec. 30), vs. ORL (Jan. 2)

The Warriors remain a fickle team. They won five games in a row, but played in 14 consecutive crunch-time games, most of which ended up so close because they’d relinquished a big early lead. They did close out a tight one against the Celtics in OT last week — their best win of the season — but their inconsistencies make it hard to tell what to make of this team. Are they simply average? They’re 15-15, 10th in the West, with the 13th-ranked offense and 15th-ranked defense. Golden State’s group of rookies continues to show promise, but what does that mean for Stephen Curry and the team’s immediate success? — Andrews

Steph, Warriors stars offer fatherhood advice to a first-time dad | NBC Sports Bay Area

Draymond Green

“Biggest surprise for a first-time father is understanding that you have zero control. I think that, as a man, we feel like we’re in control of things, like we got everything handled. And so I think, No. 1, is understand that you have zero control. I think No. 2 is understanding how supportive you need to be of your lady, as well as your child. I think that’s No. 2. And then I think the third thing, and most importantly, is just trying to be present. Because, man, it happens so fast.

“Like one day you got to hold the baby’s head up, and then the next day, the baby’s swinging her head all around. It’s out of control. I think just being present, because everything at that point — it happens so fast. All of the sudden, the baby’s sitting up, and you’re like, ‘Yo, where in the hell did the time go?’ I think just really being present in those moments is everything.”

Detroit Pistons set NBA record with 27th straight loss | ESPN

Entering Tuesday’s game, Pistons coach Monty Williams couldn’t avoid the topic of the all-time losing mark — something he said he didn’t want his name connected to — but it continues to weigh heavily on the franchise.

“Again, when you look at records, you think of coaches, but I’m sure the players don’t want that attached to the name on the jersey,” Williams said. “Was it heavy? It’s been heavy for a while. That’s just the nature of this kind of losing streak and it’s not gonna change because we’re grading the level of it, we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do to change it.”

Grizzlies’ Ja Morant named Western Conference Player of the Week in return from suspension | The Athletic

After leading the Memphis Grizzlies to a 3-0 showing in his first three games of the season, star guard Ja Morant earned Western Conference Player of the Week honors for Dec. 18 to 24, the NBA announced Tuesday.

Morant averaged 28.0 points, 9.0 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game in wins over the New Orleans Pelicans, Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks. Memphis, 13th in the West at 9-19, won three straight games for the first time this season.

Highlighting Brandin Podziemski’s unprecedented feel as a Warriors rookie

What does being “communal” mean within this team? Typically, it means knowing how to be a “connector,” someone who can act as a bridge between play initiation and play finishing. It can also mean doing all the little blue-collar work that sometimes goes unnoticed: screen-setting to set shooters free, boxing out, crashing the boards, doing one’s work early defensively, etc.

On a team that places emphasis on knowing how to be useful when the main moneymakers are getting all the attention from defenses, having feel also means knowing when to slot into those spaces created by such attention — for example, going to the ball and driving inside when no one is minding you.

Trayce Jackson-Davis’ impact and how it relieves the burden on Dario Šarić

While the overall numbers with Šarić as the four have gone done a bit since last month — with him paired with one of Looney, Draymond Green, or Trayce Jackson-Davis next to him at the five, the Warriors have posted a net differential of minus-0.5 — zeroing in on the numbers with Jackson-Davis as his frontcourt partner paints a highly intriguing picture.

With only 91 possessions spent together prior to tonight’s game against the Washington Wizards, the sample size is extremely small — so take these numbers with the customary grain of salt. But with Jackson-Davis at the five with Šarić next to him at the four, the Warriors have outscored opponents by a whopping 29.3 points per 100 possessions, with an offensive rating (122.0) equivalent to third in the league and a defensive rating (92.6) equivalent to the best in the league, per Cleaning The Glass.
